(EXPIRED) Hitachi 2TB 5K3000 for $69.99AR from Newegg

Bought two.  Hope they work out.

According to a few Newegg reviewers this drive has some slow sectors. I'm not sure what that means though.

Me either.  The 2 that I bought last week preceleared in 22 hours per cycle.  Nothing slow about that.  I take Newegg reviews with a grain of salt, because some of those people are slow themselves.

I will be running some speed tests on these drives tonight when I get home.  The preclears on the two I have was faster than the WD that were clearing at the same time.

I was clearing 4 drives in total at the same time and the Hitachis took 25ish hours.  The WD took about an hour or so more.

How did you buy two ? The $20 off is a one time use, not per drive... so you buy 1 drive, it's $20 off, you buy 2 drives, it's still $20 off so $10 off per drive...

Likely multiple newegg accounts by using multiple email addresses to sign up for their newsletter.

I had a credit that expired in a few weeks so I picked up one of these. Hopefully they pack it well.

When they first posted this deal, the price was $79.99 with a $10 rebate.  So I just bought 2.  They bumped it to $99.99 with a $20 off coupon on 1 drive.

If it makes you feel better, I paid $500 for 75gb like... a long time ago.

I got 3 of these drives and 1st preclear is done finding 0 errors.  Total time was 24:31.

That's cheep.  I paid $1500 for a 1GB SCSI... a long time ago.

You paid that, or your company paid that? I couldn't see a home user paying $1500 for a hard drive.

I paid it.  Also paid $1000 for a 1GB IDE hard drive.  Micropolis for both.  The IDE was recognized as 2 HDs by the system 512MB C drive and a 497MB D drive.  Was HUGE when I bought it.  200MB was considered a large HD then.

My parents bought me a 20MB external SCSI drive in 1987 or 88. Does anyone have any idea what they paid? I need to thank them again.

I would be ashamed to tell you what I paid for my first 5 meg HD! I think it was 1984-85.

I try and not think about it.

I am not sure, but I think when they came out they were like $1200 - $1500 or so.

Just wanted to update that all 3 drives passed the preclear test, so things are good so far with these drives (knock on wood).

Mine passed preclear without issue.

Also, had to chime in about the hdd of the past.  I bought a 420MB WD drive for $550 when they first came out!

My two 5K3000 drives passed 3 cycles each of pre_clear without any problems.

My single 7K3000 also passed 3 cycles in record time.

One of the first hard drives I bought was a 100MB for $995.00.  I can't recall the brand.  (Did I just reveal my age???)

Anyone else have reallocated sectors on their 5K3000 drives? I've got 5 already.

I have 2 that passed 3 preclear cycles each with 0 errors.  You may just have a bad egg.

Not really... it was not that long ago.  ;D

On the other hand, your memory is failing.... or, it could be you just wanted to forget what you paid.

Doing the math

  If 100Meg= $1,000

    1000Meg (1Gig) = $10,000

    1000Gig  (1TB)  = $10,000,000

    2TB = $20,000,000

Good thing we were not building Multi-Terabyte servers back when you purchased that original drive.

This deal is back at Newegg.

My family's first computer got a SemiDisk 2 meg RAM-Drive around '86 or '87.  I think it cost somewhere around $700 from a going out of business/into bankruptcy sale.  Had a battery backup that would keep the data safe for up to 6 hours in the event of a power outage.  Made that Epson QX-10 wicked-fast.  Launched into ValDocs in seconds.  Instantly switched between word processing, spreadsheet, drawing, etc. without swapping floppy disks.  Looking back, I'm amazed at the concepts behind those products.  I didn't see integration like that on another platform until the early 90s when Microsoft started combining their individual apps into a suite.

Anyway, off to buy a couple 5k3000 drives.  Gotta replace an EARS that's acting up and add more space.
