Multiple failed disks

Thank you!  Will do.

Not sure how to start, what the steps will look like, etc., for beginning to recover this array.

You'll restore the data to disk5 later from a backup or do you plan to try and recover the formatted data with UFS explorer or similar?

  • Author

Yes, I have the original Disk 15 that I will mount and restore from.  The other two disks, one of which is showing "new" and one of which is red x'd, are my priorities.  I just don't know the process to start working on it.

IIRC both disks passed the extended SMART test, if yes they should be OK, so easiest way would be doing a new config (with the new disk15 also) and re-sync parity, then copy the data from the old disk15.

  • Author

Both disks passed SMART, correct.

So even though one disk says "new disk," it is safe to do a New Config and sync parity?  How do I address the disk that is red X'd?

  • Community Expert

A new config will re-enable all disks.

One last question before I begin.  Should I do this with the "new" Disk 15, and then mount the old drive with unassigned devices or on another system for restore, or should I put the old Disk 15 in, run New Config, and when everything is back up, replace it with its replacement disk as originally planned?

  • Community Expert

If the old disk is expected to be good you can use, if it's known bad don't.

  • Author

Done.  Parity is being rebuilt.  Assuming all goes well, I will mount the old Disk 15 on another system and copy data back over.

There are several (four) disks under "Historical Devices."  I have never seen that before.

This is part of the Unassigned Devices plugin. It would show drives that were connected to UD and are not anymore.

You can remove this panel (or any UD panel) with the toggle on the top right of the plugin section.

Parity is syncing, so far so good, fingers crossed.

Complete.

What is the best way to mount the old disk 15 to pull data?  Will unraid see a USB-connect hard disk if I plug it in (without a reboot), or should I use another linux system?  The FS is encrypted, if that matters.

  • Community Expert

You can use the UD plugin.

  • Author

Can I plug it in with USB, and do I have to reboot after I do?

  • Community Expert

You can use USB and no reboot needed.

  • Author

Via USB, unraid sees the disk, but "Mount" is not an option.  Only "Format" is an option.

All disks in the array are XFS, encrypted, if that matters.

I can take other disks (FAT32 etc) and they appear and can be mounted just fine.

But my old Disk 15 can only be "formatted" according to Unassigned Devices.

Is it encrypted with the pool key? if not click on the device name and you can specify the key on the settings page.

Anything interesting in the syslog when connecting it?

  • Author

Encrypted with the same key as everything else in the array, yes.

Syslog does have this:

Oct  9 09:00:06 ffs2 ntfs-3g[30186]: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Oct  9 09:00:06 ffs2 kernel: Buffer I/O error on dev sdy1, logical block 44, async page read

Although I have no idea what "sdy1" is, as the old disk comes up under UD as "sdz"

"sdy" is showing under UD's historic devices as the old Disk 15, same serial number.

I shut down the server, plugged the disk directly into a SATA port and the power supply, bypassing the USB adapter completely, and it has been mounted and I am now moving data.....

USB did not work.

What kind of USB interface was this? It might not have been transparent.

Yes, that suggests a problem with the USB bridge, not all will work correctly.
