unRAID Server Release 5.0-beta10 Available

Recommended Posts

So, I upgraded from 4.7 to 5.beta10.

I was previously a 5.0 beta user, but had some apps that didn't care for the 5.0beta (notably acronis, my backup software for desktop/htpc), so I downgraded back to 4.7. However, I really *really* want/need TimeMachine backups on my laptop.

I installed 5.0Beta10 today, and created a AFP share. Export (Yes, time Machine); Security = Secure; Limit 250000;  User Access (UserName) Read/Write.

Now when I mount the AFP share in Lion I can't write to it, can't perform a Time Machine backup (reports zero out of 262.14GB free).

I'm assuming it's because my Mac is attempting to connect via Guest (when the username/password is identical from user on the Unraid server & Mac).

I'm attaching the syslog.7z (was too big for a raw attach). Aaaand the board doesn't support .7z files. Here's a zip. :(

You can follow instructions in the netatalk documentation:

http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/2.2/htmldocs/upgrade.html#id4005752

At the end of that section there the "brute force" approach, which is delete the .AppleDB directory.  Here is what the netatalk documentation says about that:

If you are absolutely sure what you are doing, you can also just clear out all database files from the .AppleDB directories. They will be recreated, but will not contain the same CNIDs as before!! That might lead to all sorts of problems, like aliases not working any more on clients. As I said, make sure you know the consequences and don't mind them.

Actually I think that info is not 100% accurate because it appears the code will try and use CNID info stored in files under .AppleDouble directory.  But I have not completely verified this.

So I don't know the implication of this on your server.  I can say that in testing I just delete all the .AppleDB directories  ;D

Thanks. Perhaps this information could be included in the release notes whenever netatalk is updated, or even a little script that people can run while the array is stopped to update their CNID databases properly?

Cheers.

Right that's how it's been for many releases now.  For this release, to see if Realtek's driver would work, I disabled the r8169 linux driver, and after building the kernel, built the Realtek driver separately.

After downloading the "r8168-8.024.00.tar.bz2" file from the Realtek support site, untar'ed into /usr/src/r8168-8.024.00

Then type:

cd /usr/src/r8168-8.024.00

make all

depmod -a

This will build and install the Realtek r8168 driver.  But I'm thinking this driver has problems.

Has anyone with a Realtek NIC had success with 5.0-beta10?

Yes in the log you have:

Jul 23 22:06:48 Warehouse13 afpd[19984]: AFP3.3 Login by nobody

This indicates guest access. When you click on the server in Finder, do you see a "connect as" button in the upper right of the window?  You can click on this to connect with your user name.

Thanks!

Right now, I do not. I've even emptied my KeyChain, just to be sure.

However, as I looked at the last few lines of the syslog I get

dim is my username on the mac. Same password as on my unraid server.

Lemme dig up some logs on the macbook.

Soon as I change it from 'secure' to ..

It being 'afp security settings'.

Export: Yes, Time Machine

Security: Public

TimeMachine Volume Size Limit 0 (from 250,000)

...

SMB Security Settings "Export=No"

Security=Public

...

It worked after that. Either it's a issue with TimeMachine Volume Size Limit, or my MacBook Pro is well, special. At this point I'll take either one.

also: I'm pretty sure I connected via AFP vs SMB in the 'finder' -> 'all' it lists warehouse13 & warehouse13-SMB ... I connected by 'warhouse13'.

Has anyone with a Realtek NIC had success with 5.0-beta10?

Does a RealTek 8111C (C2SEE-O MB) count?  I think you have test machines with this MB as you used the MB for LimeTech machines for a while, so I assumed this has been checked out already.

If not, and a test with it would be helpful, I can install it tomorrow and give it a go.

FYI:

I cant see any AFP share in finder for "Tower", strange, I going to read previous post and see if someone else have this problem......  see picture attached.

My AFP share is named Timemachine and TimeMachine-LION

Any way, I going to make a  rebbot of Tower and see......

EDIT

Disabled SMB for the TimeMachine share so it's only are AFP on these, now it works.

EDIT 2

from TimeMachine my share don't have any DATA!!! Doing a new back up right now.

Hmm, ok this is not good. Webgui has stopped responding, can't get to shares. Have removed all ad-ons, same issue.

Repeatable every restart. Can get onto server via telnet, and can get into flash via SMB. Server showing HD activity light constantly.

Can see my /mnt/disk mounts without problem, but stalls when listing contents. /mnt/user/*share* stalls whenever I try to list contents...

Syslog and list of processes attached.

Very weird..  Steps that "resolved" issue as followed:

• Went back to beta 9. Same issue as shown above.

• I swapped out the parity drive cable, and re-seated all data and power cables.

• unRAID started as per normal, however parity disk was shown as missing, so array stopped.

• Ended up replacement cable was faulty. Tried a known good cable.

• unRAID started without a hitch.

Why would unRAID lock up in such a manner if a drive/connection was acting up? I've not seen it behave this way before, can anyone see if unRAID was pushing anything obvious through the syslog? I can't seem to see anything.

Parity check running now, is running veeery slowly. Suspecting a dying drive..  No drive errors so probably not cable?

*edit*

Definitely parity drive failing. New cable, new port, still pushing out read/write errors.

Cheers

I am using the Asus M4A785-M motherboard with built-in Realtek 8112 gigabit LAN and this is working fine.

Not much difference in write speed though as compared to beta-9

I'm using a GIGABYTE GA-790XT-USB3 motherboard with an onboard 8111D that's working fine.

As noted above... pretty much the same speed as 5.0 beta9.

I have a machine that has a Asus M4A89GTD PRO motherboard (Realtek 8111E onboard). It also has a Trendnet TEG-PCITXR (Realtek 8169, I believe) PCI adapter. Normally this is an XP workstation that connects to my home network (onboard LAN) and a DSL modem (Trendnet adapter).

I also boot this as an unRAID test server and on Beta 5.7 and 5.8 only the Trendnet adapter was recognized and activated, requiring me to switch network cables to access the unRAID server from my home network. Now on Beta 5.10 it is reversed, only the onboard LAN is recognized.

I assume this is due to the switch from a linux network driver to the Realtek driver mentioned in the change log.

edit to correct Beta.10

Scrap that... you've fixed both the things I identified! Persistent inodes and extended attributes!

Great job, thanks very very much!

Hi Nezel,

Just running that command you posted in the last thread:

find disk*/ -name .AppleD* -exec rm -r {} \;

To get rid of all my AppleDB files.  It runs and goes through all disks but I see this a lot:

`disk9/ReadyNAS/Videogames/.AppleDouble': No such file or directory

That normal?

Got my first kernel oops shutting down beta 9 to upgrade to beta 10.  Figured I'd post here to see if it happens again in beta 10.  For reference, I used the Powerdown command while ssh'd in.

ALSO FYI, this is the first shutdown with my (3) new SAS cards:

Saves the day,

Yes, that 'No such file or directory' message is normal, however...

As I stated in my previous post... you don't necessarily want to delete all of your .AppleDouble folders; there might have been some important resource fork information in there. To be clear, I don't recommend deleting the .AppleDouble folders.

Deleting .AppleDB folders is fine, because they only contain the netatalk CNID databases.

I'll summarise the current status of AFP from my point of view, now that Tom has made several improvements.

There used to be an issue that the inode numbers of files and folders in user shares changed every time the array was started, this caused the AFP databases to be invalid, requiring corrections, which took a while every array restart. This has now basically been fixed in beta10 (with some minor caveats that Tom mentions in a previous post).

There used to be an issue that extended attributes were not possible in user shares, and Netatalk wanted to use them in it's default configuration. Tom has fixed this as well.

  • Netatalk creates a database of file and folder locations (based on inode numbers), by default in a .AppleDB folder in the root of each share.
  • From Netatalk 2.1 onwards, some of this location data is also cached in the .AppleDouble folders that have always been used for storing resource forks.
  • When Netatalk daemons are stopped (because you stopped the array, or rebooted), the databases are closed down, and must be restarted when the daemons start again.

In my testing, I have found that the process of caching this database data in the .AppleDouble folders takes an annoyingly long time, primarily because it's a lot of small reads and writes to the parity protected array.

In my system I run an additional drive outside the array, which stores not critical data, and runs my the add on applications that I've selected (Plex and Squeezebox Server).

To speed up the performance of these databases, I have chosen to modify the

/etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default-

file, by adding the

nocnidcache

option (which disables caching the database in .AppleDouble folders), and adding the

dbpath:

variable to move the .AppleDB folders onto my drive outside the array. This has improved initial browsing performance dramatically.

The standard unRAID setup works fine, and there are no bugs. I wasn't happy with the browsing performance, so I made those changes. I'm putting it out there as an idea, rather than advising anyone to do it.

Has anyone with a Realtek NIC had success with 5.0-beta10?

Yes, I think :).  My system is up and no problems with the 5b10 code.  The rest is curiosity...

I'm using an Intel D945GCLF2D, which according to the Intel documentation uses the RealTek RTL8111C Ethernet Controller.

I see in my syslog

should I see a used by other than zero in the lsmod output for the r8168 module?

unRAID Server Release 5-beta has now passed its 1 year birthday.

I was of the understanding that one of the main developments of Unraid was to make it somewhat modular, and release 5 was a major step in that direction. However there seem to have been serious scopesliding, so now V5 is also dealing with other trivial protocol and driver issues, which could have been postponed to v5.x releases.

Not releasing a truely modular v5 is putting other developers on standby, and are actually holding back the true potential of Unraid.

I hope the future will show tighter project management, including release and scope control.

I love Unraid as a bitbucket, and I know of no real alternatives. So core product and technology is good.. but the project is not managed well.

Anyway,, Happy Birthday 5-beta !! :)

I've only been in the unRAID game for a month or so but to call driver and protocol issues trivial is a bit of a reach, don't you think?  A stable OS is the most important thing?  While unRAID is a paid product, I understand there's really only one person working on it.  I'm sure Tom's plugin architecture will be front and center once 5.0 is stable.

I'am also playing and enjoying UnRaid for only a few month's now, and i must say: Never have been more enthusiastic over a NAS product.

Tried many worst case scenario's of failing hardware and UnRaid did not let me down.

Having a history with failing Netgear,Synology and Qnap home NAS solutions. and losing data  >:( >:(

Or not being able to have the flexibility with disks and array like UnRaid has.

Maybe UnRaid is not the easiest in the beginning: Read and you will learn: The active community full of enthousiast's is also part of the succes i guess.

For how Small Lime Technology is : i think they and everyone surrounding in the (non paid) community are doing a really good job.

I know a lot huge brands with hundreds or thousands employees where you pay a lot more for less options and get less support and updates.

There is a saying: When you pay peanuts , you get monkeys. With UnRaid i don't have this feeling.

We all get really much for really a few bucks.

Most of us only buy a (in my opinion) cheap UnRaid licence for a really great product : Nothing really on the market compared to it.

Oke : We are a year in Beta and Development to a higher version takes maybe longer then those huge brands.

But keep in mind:  better a good stable version than a unfinished product.

Just my opinion.

I have been using Unraid for approx 5 years, and it is a nice piece of software.

I must have a communication problem, as it seems you are commenting on something else than what I was adressing.

BTW:

Would I pay for more development ?. Yes ! (maybe as a surcharge for upgrading to v5)

Would I pay for modules developed by others ?. Yes !

So true. Wouldn't mind helping Tom out for the latest version, once stable.

No,  you don't have a communication problem  ;D

The reply was more meant in general.

Are we not expecting too much for this low price ??

I now read your Edit:

YES AND YES for me also
