I guess drives are out there as long as you want to spend the money.

 

 

Work just recieved a shipment of 140+ 10,000RPM 3TB Hitachis for 3 Black Blaze servers they are building. Man I've never seen so many drives new sitting in boxes before. Here is 12 of 16 that came in today.

 

I was told the BlackBlaze servers cost aprox 5K a piece and the drives cost around 34K. Heres one being loaded up with drives.

 

 

Sad thing is they only needed 135 drives total, but they ordered 140 plus a few extras knowing that there would be some Dead ones. LOL

Welp they are setting up 3 servers for video capturing. They have IP cameras all over the place and they are using the 3 servers for video storage. I think they said they have to hold the footage for a minimum of 40 days.

 

I'm not exactly sure on how much space they have, but I think one of the IT guys said after all the stripeing or whatever BlackBlaze uses its around 80TB per server.

 

I haven't been able to get into the server room, but just picture a room with like 30 or so racks in two rows. LOL

 

I'll see if I can sneak some photos. I don't work in the IT department, but they know I'm rather geeky and show me things now and then.

Cool servers. Having 80T of storage means they are using 40% of the storage for the parity. That seems to be a lot, but what do I know.

 

The Backblaze build just gives you a server with a JBOD of drives. The IT guys must have picked the sizes for the RAID arrays to end-up with 80T of storage.

I love seeing technology. However, just to be on the safe side consider....

If this were a Wall st. firm, public pictures of a companies internal setup is usually grounds for dismissal.

Be careful and aware of policy.

Yeah pretty much why I'm not gunho to post pictures. Ask permission not for forgiveness in this particular case. LOL. Need to ask permission first because I like my paycheck.

 

To say it as vague as I can this group provides Tech Support for a Native American Indian Tribe here in the North West. Basically the Tribe made some right calls and made some money and now is spending it correctly. They have a pretty large Casino, Administration Building and a few Gas Stations. So this Group that is internal to the Organization does all the data from email, Mass storage, security storage, internal websites and on and on. Sonet Ring comprised of Fiber across the entire Reservation supplying High Speed Internet to every member as well as all services.

 

I found one photo looking around that somebody else posted so I'm going to go on a limb and say its kinda OK. Of course this photo is approx 1/4 of the setup in that room.

I worked in a corporate data center like that rows and rows of communication equipment machines and mainframes.

it was fun!

Sadly I worked on the design of the in ground infrastructure not the above ground hardware. Meaning vault here vault there, miles of conduit here and standing in the rain and sun a lot. LOL

You should bring in 3 unRAID servers full of 3TB...and say "See...I have more storage than you! "
