Toshiba joins the fray

Featured Replies

This is nice to see/hear.  Hoping toshiba can continue with hitachi's recent success and line of drives

It is nice that we'll have more choices and lower prices, but I'm not looking forward to Toshiba branded 3.5" drives.  In the 2.5" drive market, Toshiba creates the least reliable laptop drives which often fail within the first year.  Nearly every laptop drive I've ever had to replace for myself or others has been a Toshiba drive.  I certainly hope they take on Hitachi's QA methods, otherwise we'll have a lot of crap 3.5" drives out there.

Hey, if having a 3rd competitor in the market helps drive down drive prices, the even if you never buy a Toshiba drive, they still help you.

This is soooo true...

+1

A lot of laptop manufacturers tend to go with Toshiba 2.5's so although they definitely do have a higher failure rate, some of it can be explained by ratio's in the market as well.

I've had mixed results, I have a couple Toshiba 2.5's that have been going strong for years, and have had some that didn't last a year.

Either way, I find it highly unlikely Toshiba would do anything other than use Hitachi's patents and designs, why spend time and R&D on a market when your handed a winning formula?

My Toshiba laptop came with one of course.  1 3/4 years old but does have a couple of relocated sectors.

So, WD just got a nice long inside look at the Hichachi tech before spinning it off to Toshiba....

Nice...  ;D

In my experience many laptop drives die from poor thermal management within the PC rather than as a direct consequence of who designed or built the drive.

I hope they learn of it. I had too many EARS drive that needed an RMA.
