This card seems truly awesome.  8 sata ports on a pcie x8 bus.  This should be pretty fast no?

 

I can get one for like $35 shipped and the breakout cables for like $13 each.

 

Why go with any other card, e.g. the supermicro... the supermicro is almost $100 and uses a slower bus--pcie x4.

 

I plan on just using 2tb hard drives.. up to 12 of them (using the 4 onboard sata ports as well).

 

Should I just go with this card?  Will I notice any performance problems with it?  Will i get a full 1gb/s transfer rate on reads, over my 1gb/s network?

 

There must be some drawback to this card cause it's only $35!?

It maxes out the drives at 2.2TB.

With cheap deals going around on the M1015 on these forums at the moment ($70 including postage), I'd go with one of those instead.  That way you're future proofed.  I realise it's double the price, but it is the better choice imho.

I agree that the M1015 would be the better choice.  In fact, I just bought another one today.

 

But the Br10i would probably be fine for your needs as long as you are OK with the 2.2TB limitation.

I bought a sata breakout cable for the br10i as well.  Can I use this cable on the M1015?  If so, I could put the br10i I just bought back on the eBay market.

Yes, you can use the same cable on the M1015.  The M1015 and BR10i both have SFF-8087 connectors.

Where do you see them for $70--I only see em for $80.  Also, I need the full size bracket for it.  Does it come with the bracket for 70?  If not, how much is the bracket for that?
