Is XBMC mature enough to consider replacing Popcorn Hour players?

Featured Replies

Yes but not DTS Master (or more correctly, DTS-HD Master Audio)

Yes it does there is a patch that works wonderful until official is out.

(Don't have link now Google it)

The nightlies and monthly snapshots have support for DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD as well as uncompressed multichannel LPCM.

The nightlies and monthly snapshots use the new AudioEngine. Read more about it here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=AudioEngine

  • 3 weeks later...

99% of my stuff is BD ISO. I tried XBMC a month ago (latest stable, and nightly build) and both had problems with a good 50% of my movies and subtitles, it detected the track but when the subtitles played they disappear instantly. XBMC's video quality is also complete trash compared to my A300, I am unsure why. I'm using a GTX 680 on the computer I tested XBMC on, HDMI directly into my receiver and into the same TV I use my popcorn hour on. Everything seemed fuzzy no matter what I tried. It also refused to play 24hz, setting it to sync my TV with the media resulted in the movie playing at about 2FPS.

Between the subtitle issues, and the lower PQ.. I will keep using my A300. Everything else seemed superior, but those were game breakers for me.

Im having the same subtitle problems with some m2ts, bdmv and iso movies...

I keep shouting this on xbmc forum but nobody replies..

Strange that we are the only one shouting about this... Its clearly a bug!

Strange I don't have those issues.... As for pic quality its very good, but I wanted the best possible, so when I click to a movie on xbmc, it plays with mpc with madvr, lav filters and the pic its just a outstanding ;-) the same for blurays it starts automatically arcsoft tm, so full blurays menus, 3d etc....

The audio engine support for DTS-HD MA etc is indeed in the nightly builds.  These builds are FRODO builds, NOT Eden builds.

As previously mentioned, Eden builds do not have this support.  While there is a patch, it's a custom hack, and it's for Windows only.

Off course you dont see those issues, ur running mpc-hc and tm, not the internal player, no wonder you dont see it then

If you use the internal player, you will see it, believe me

Huge amount of movies have the subtitle problem

I tried TMT, but it doesnt work good with ati drivers (unless i get the last version)

i tried powerdvd, but thats a hit and miss

maybe i should try mpc-hc with madvr, does that one support bluray menu? i dont think so ..

Well with the internal that had at the beginning didn't noticed something....

I wanted best image and combined xbmc with mpc, so to have best of both worlds... (no bluray menu, that's why tm I have 430gt nvidia)

Over the weekend I tried XMBC, Openelec and very quickly came to the conclusion that I just don't like it. I don't get impressed with pretty backgrounds and fancy pictures...but when I tried to play some ISO files it failed miserably and I didn't get the quality picture I was used to with my Dune. And then trying to get a remote control to work properly was just a pain so I gave up and went right back to my Dune/Popcorn hours players.

well xbmc is not for everyone.... I had smart dune b1 and one from the old versions of popcorn and sold them.....

I have a love hate relationship with xbmc. I'm use to media browser so the differences seem glaring to me, but I'm attempting to get use to it.

i have to agree about the love hate relationship in the beginning, i used to use gbpvr for plain ease of use as a media player.

i used to just use xbmc for fun then i decided to just use xbmc full time and have not looked back since...

it has features that nothing else has imho it's the best media player [full stop].

I'd suggestion people that are having a hard time getting used to XBMC take a look at some of the other skins that are out there. That might make them feel more comfortable. My personal favorites are the aeon mq skins.

confluence the default is the more simple to use....aeon has more things, but if they have hard time with the default imagine with the others......
