There are a few good USB adapters that plug in to the USB headers on the board. I have one from monoprice that fits in an empty PCI slot bay off the back of the case to host a 10 foot USB extension cable leading to an iPod cable that my girlfriend uses to charge her iPhone haha. Obviously isn't passed through to any guests but it still outputs power. All the normal power plugs over that way are taken up by devices hooked up to my UPS' so there are no free plugs for a charger.

Side line regarding power.

I use a few of these on the back edge of my versatables.com desk.

Sorry to derail the thread even further but I was just looking at versatables.com and saw this desk for $800 bucks. I literally made this exact same desk, before I got my current desk, out of a big sheet of glass and two sawhorses I had lying around the house and it cost me nothing.

"nothing" is, of course, a term of art.  Priced a large sheet of reasonably thick glass lately?  :)

... Clearly it's still a lot less than buying one from versatables;  but that's kinda like my son saying his car cost him nothing because his parents had a spare one "laying around" their garage  :)

Haha, point taken but I believe that sheet of glass came from an old table that was bought at a garage sale, and it was given to me by my parents so it actually did cost me nothing.  ;D

I'm really happy with my desk. It had to be mobile enough for me to move since I have a much smaller apartment now.  Everything fits on the desk and can roll out of the way if I need it to.

I needed it to move this weekend as my landlord installed 2 10,000 BTU AC's for me.

It wasn't so much about money with me as it was about functionality. I work from home allot and sometimes till the wee hours of the morning.  Once I get a chance, I'll have a triple monitor config with the Dell 30 in the middle and 2 dell 20"s flanking it. A shelf up top capable of holding 4 of the laptops and a shell on the bottom for 2 small towers, 2 micro servers and array units.

The monoprice edge power strips are nice, since they have USB power connectors in them and they are out of the way and you do not have wall warts.  Once I get a chance, I'll buy two more for the end tables at my bed. should neaten it up and provide an area to recharge devices when need be. These days, I'll select anything that is usb rechargeable over a different model.  Case in point I have a bunch of USB rechargeable AA battery devices and flashlights.  Even my car recharger has a USB port to recharge devices.

After you go through a disaster, you go through all sorts of what if scenarios.

That's a pretty nice looking desk. Chair needs an upgrade though!

I'm working on it. I can only buy so much at a time.  ;)

This weekend I just replaced the foam lumbar support pad that split on my Aeron chair. They might cost $900 bucks but that chair has lasted me 14 years so far and that's the only problem I've ever had with it. Holds up well and still in otherwise excellent condition. Don't know how much you're looking to spend though.

http://www.amazon.com/Aeron-Chair-Herman-Miller-Adjustable/dp/B000LT80DY/

I've got a Steelcase I've had for almost 20 years that's still an excellent office chair.  Cost ~ $1,000 in 1994, but has been through 5 moves and a LOT of use and is still my chair of choice.    I've bought several $150-$300 chairs over the years from OfficeMax/OfficeDepot/Staples ... but none of them hold a candle to the quality of a good Steelcase.    The Aeron definitely looks like another high-quality chair ... might have to check those out one of these days  :)

Walk in to the office of any start up in Silicon Valley and chances are you'll see it stocked with Aeron chairs. Definitely a very good chair. And it's so adjustable.

  • 2 weeks later...

Only problem the Aeron chairs have is if you sit crosslegged.  The design makes that very uncomfortable.

I'm Considering this one.

I had one of these before for many years. I liked it allot.

Although the Aeron really does interest me.  Unless I get to test one out, I'll hold off on that.

That chair looks pretty good ... and it's hard to beat the return policy of the seller:  "... If your chair doesn't work for you, simply call us within 30 days of receipt, repack chair in original packaging, and we will pick it up and send you a full refund (limit of 2 chairs). "

You can get a list of dealers in your area that you can go try one out in. Stores that sell ergonomic furniture will probably carry them.

The high-end dealers who carry Aeron and Steelcase will not only let you try the chairs out ... they'll bring one to you to use for a week or two -- at least they've offered that to me when I was looking.  That's how I ended up buying a Steelcase (I never intended to actually SPEND that much $$ on a chair).

In fact I had a new Steelcase for a week last year; but decided it just wasn't enough nicer than my old one to spend the $$

... I may, however, have to try an Aeron => it really does look good and the reviews are certainly superb.

I'm interested, just cautious. That's allot of money to spend without trying it out. There may be a place in the city that has them out. I'll check into it and see. In the meantime I got my new Pioneer S-DJ08 monitor/stereo speakers. They're kickin'.

Nice speakers  :)

I have a couple good sets of speakers (Definitive Tech towers with matching surrounds and center in my main room and some Bose 901's I've had for a long time in another room) ... but nothing close to that on my computer desk !!

I knew I was low cladding in the computer chair department, but I didn't think by that much!

I don't do a lot at my "workstation" anymore, just the odd stuff that I can't do from my laptop and my recliner.

But my computer chair happens to be a closeout Walmart special camping chair, complete with dual cup holders. Cost me $5 and I've had it for 6-7 years now. How many if you can say your pc chair has been to campgrounds, ball games and concerts? Lol.

But since I do most of my pc work from the recliner, I guess its only fair I use that cost as how much I spent on a pc chair... $1500.

I plan to get a pair of Yamaha HS80M's with the Matching Sub HS10W, but for now I wanted speakers that could double duty for listening pleasure and mixing.  With the built in switch and remote control. I can switch between computers. Since I have a couple of different music platforms that matters allot to me.

My favorite Bose speakers were the 10.2's Which you can only get used these days. I had two pair. They were great for Home Theater, New age and Pop.  For classic rock nothing beat the old JBL L100s, and for modern Metal or In your face studio sound The L100T's and L100T3's.  w00t. I'm an old school mid-fi speaker guy.

I heard the 901's demoed once at a Bose place. They were phenomenal, but you had to have the room geometry for them.

What sold me on the 10.2's is one day I went to the store to purchase the L100T's.  I heard some music that sounded like I was right in the studio, only I could not tell where they were coming from. Nor could the sales person.  I was sold. I did not have enough money. I came back a few weeks later with a battery of CD's and I was sold!  Great for pop, new age, ambient and Home Theater.  Most Hi Fi audiophiles do not like them because they are very non directional. But that's what I loved about them. Turn them loud enough and it filled the room like they were playing for you.

Although for really in your face rock concert metal sound. The JBL 100T's and L100T3's can't be beat. I used to switch off between each set depending on what I was listening to and how I felt.  These always reminded me of being at the concerts or in the studio.

I've been looking for some kind of laptop table to use with my easy chair.

It's an ikea poang special but it's really comfortable.

I purchased a table mate to see how well it does.

I have the Levenger Room for my side kick table, but it's too high for this chair. Nice for the couch though.

Any ideas?

Any suggestions for getting old speakers like that refurbished? I have a couple sets that the foam and paper speaker surrounds are torched, and I'd love to get them going again. I can't seem to find any reliable advice online about surround repair.

I usually go on eBay and bid on parts. Orange County Speaker Repair used to have Kits.

I repaired an old set of Kenwoods. They sounded good. I sold them since I had so many speakers.

Okay, one more diversion from the real topic here -- for another trip down speaker-memory-lane  :)

I've also had a few sets of JBL's over the years, but by far my favorite JBL speaker was one my uncle had in 1960 ... one that many of you have probably never heard of, but it was an AMAZING speaker system and I'd buy one in a heartbeat today if I found one in great shape  -- the James B. Lansing Paragon.    If you aren't familiar with it, Google it;  if you EVER get a chance to hear one, DO IT !!

I actually saw one on e-bay a couple years ago, but I quit bidding at $10,000  :)

I just checked to see if there happen to be any for sale right now -- and didn't find any; but I did find an archived listing from a sale from last year (no idea what it finally sold for).  There's a nice picture of it in the listing:  http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=431502

I believe my uncle paid $2500 for it new from JBL ... I sure wish he still had it !!

(It does, of course, require a room to put it in !!  :) ]
