September 3, 201312 yr Good to see ... right on schedule => which means the 5TB drives should be out in ~ 90 days
September 3, 201312 yr The Seagate 4TB is currently at 2tb is at 220$ on Amazon and the WD 4TB is at 213$. I'm going to wait for the 5TB drives and probably pick two up. The prices are still pretty high though.

September 3, 201312 yr I suspect the intent was to Modify the post, but he Quoted it instead. The 2nd post is NOT an exact quote of the first -- he added "NAS" to the description of the Seagate drive (to clarify which one he was looking at) ... I'm also looking forward to the 5TB Reds, which are due in December. There's speculation about whether or not they'll be 5 platter drives (with 1TB platters) or 4 platter drives (with 1.25 TB platters). Sure would be nice to see 1.25TB platters ... yet another bump in performance !!
September 3, 201312 yr http://www.storagereview.com/wd_red_4tb_hdd_review_wd40efrx They also have a review for a 1TB 2.5" Red, which is interesting.
September 4, 201312 yr Author I suspect the intent was to Modify the post, but he Quoted it instead. Sure would be nice to see 1.25TB platters ... yet another bump in performance !! I will not go above a 3 platter. Every 4 platter i have bought in the last decade has died in 18 months or less. Also it seems every 4 platter needs 25% more juice to spin it than the normal jump. 1platter@3 watts, 2platter@4 watts, 3platter@5 watts, then boom 4platter 8 watts. Like they need a complete diff setup to get that last platter in vs the rest of the line.
September 4, 201312 yr http://www.storagereview.com/wd_red_4tb_hdd_review_wd40efrx They also have a review for a 1TB 2.5" Red, which is interesting. Where is their temp, noise and power benchmarks ? That is what I want to know. I haven't seen anything that makes me want to use the Reds over the Seagate/Hitachi alternatives. The 7200 rpm Hitachi drives are the only ones I won't add to my server due to running too warm for my taste. I am amazed at how cool the 3TB Seagate 7200 rpm drives are. I really like their performance too. I'll buy Reds when they are price competitive to the others. They can't justify a price premium over $10/drive to me. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
September 4, 201312 yr ... From the specs that I've seen, it appears that WD added a platter to get to 4TB. Both power usage and weight are up. Not sure how that matches up with your expectations, and of course this may have no bearing on the 5TB model.

The 5TB is rumored to be a 1.25TB/platter drive, but that's not been officially confirmed by WD as far as I know, so it may simply be a 5-platter drive. I'm hoping for 4 1.25TB platters
September 9, 201312 yr Just placed a bulk order for 40 4TB Reds! Nice !! I'm waiting for the 5TB's for my next server
September 9, 201312 yr Just placed a bulk order for 40 4TB Reds! Nice !! I'm waiting for the 5TB's for my next server Thought about it, but without knowing if they are going to be 4 or 5 platters I decided not to wait. I really feel they will launch at 5x 1TB platters then later be "relaunched" with 4x 1.25TB platters much later into 2014. I got a killer dealer on these 40, well below Amazon/Newegg price, so I had to jump.
September 9, 201312 yr You may very well be right -- and I'm not going to buy a 5-platter drive. I'll wait for a 4 platter, 1.25TB/platter unit (or just buy 4TB drives).
September 10, 201312 yr You may very well be right -- and I'm not going to buy a 5-platter drive. I'll wait for a 4 platter, 1.25TB/platter unit (or just buy 4TB drives). The thing is, if they do launch them in 4x 1.25TB form (I still think it's incredibly unlikely), it'll probably be a very bad price per gig ratio compared to the 4TB drives for half a year or so. If they launch them at 5x 1TB, the price per gig will probably be only slightly worse, but 5 platter drives lose a lot of reliability over 4 platter drives... I just don't see any way that 5TB will be the way to go until mid/late 2014. I hope i'm wrong, cause any advancement is good... but it just seems way too soon to be seeing 1.25TB platters.
September 10, 201312 yr Just placed a bulk order for 40 4TB Reds! Expect a several failures at once at some point.
September 10, 201312 yr Just placed a bulk order for 40 4TB Reds! Expect a several failures at once at some point. Lots of people here buy bulk and never had problems. I stress test for 72 hours for a reason, and while they are the same batches, I highly doubt a bunch will just straight up start failing on the same day. There's not an even amount of workload going through them like there would be on a striped array. Even though they are reds, I spin them down to save power, and they aren't spun up unless i'm accessing files on that drive. I could see a couple failing a few weeks a part, but a bunch before i'm able to rebuild would be pretty unlikely. Even if it happens, complete drive failure with no warning signs is pretty uncommon.. I'd most likely be able to manually transfer data off. P.S. Tom: Where's dual parity?
September 10, 201312 yr I'd most likely be able to manually transfer data off them. ... and if not, you could always restore from your backups [That's what they're for]
