mrmarkfr
Is there any benefit of going to the less dense drive cages, do the temps tend to be lower in the 4x3 vs the 5x3 due to more air space around them? Link to comment
garycase
Clearly it depends on the specific cages and how they're designed, but yes, in my experience I've had notably better temps with 4-in-3 cages than the 5-in-3's Link to comment
WeeboTech
The Supermicro 5x3's ran cooler for me. They are heavier metal and have a 92MM fan. I switched the fan to a GEILD low noise fan and the 5x3's still where cooler then the 4x3's I had In addition I could not hear them. (once the fan was changed). Link to comment
mrmarkfr
I just picked up 2 of these for $40 each, the price was right, and I've seen some people who are happy with them. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132037&cm_re=rosewill_cage-_-16-132-037-_-Product They have 120mm fans, so if I find them noisy, I'll replace them with quieter units, but it sits in a back room in the basement anyway, so not a huge issue if they are a little noisy Link to comment

mrmarkfr
I was really debating on buying this (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147233) which has 3 of those cages, but I think I have a line on an MS800 locally, so just went for 2 cages for now instead. It'll be very interesting to see what drive temps you get with these cages. Link to comment

It'll be very interesting to see what drive temps you get with these cages. Those are the same cages that come with their RSV-L4411 cases. During a parity check, my temps have never gone about 33. But, my server is in the basement also. The only weird thing with them is that the activity lights are on during idle, and flash during activity. And then there is the odd hard drive which absolutely refuses to turn on the light at idle but flashes correctly during activity (one of my 3T seagates, and a 1T seagate). Throw another drive (even the same model drive) into the slot and it works normally... Best I could come up with was slightly different firmware, but since it is only an aesthetic issue I've never bothered looking further into it. Link to comment

SSD
Link to other post where I describe these 4in3s: LINK These don't give you the ultimate confidence of the SuperMicros that the locking mechanism guarantees secure connection. I am always very careful that the Rosewill cages are fully inserted into the slots, otherwise have had some inconsistent behavior of the activity lights. Link to comment

I had been using a cooler master 4 in 3 for awhile. No complaints on that unit, but if a drive were to fail or I wanted to upgrade the size, I would have needed to take the entire unit out of the case with the way the drives are mounted in the unit. Got both of them last night and installed them. Still getting my normal parity check speeds and temps were staying at 29C or below, which is a small drop. I wasn't looking for anything enormous, I mainly wanted them for more bays, easy to change drives, consolidated power (4 molex vs 8 sata) as well as the 2.5 drive option on the trays, as I have a few old laptop hard drives I want to use. That saved on needing to buy more adaptors. Link to comment
mrmarkfr
Glad to hear, mine have shipped, but they're at my US mail drop, I won't have them for a month or so. Can't wait to get them and install them in my MS800 case. Link to comment
mr-hexen
another thing to keep in mind is that with 5-in-3 cages you typically have to bend the 5.25" drive slot mounting tabs to fit the cage. the 4-in-3 usually have a slot built into the housing to work around these. Link to comment
SSD
I would always recommend the 5in3s (taking 3 slots and mounting 5 drives in them) vs a 4in3 (taking 3 slots and mounting 4 drives in them). the extra 20% capacity is just too much to pass up. But with 5in3s costing $100 and these around $35-40, it is compelling. Like I said before, I use the Rosewills 4in3s for mounting drives outside the case, and actually like that they hold just the right number of drives for a single SAS cable. So two of these would be 8 drives, and run off the 2 SAS cables from an x8 card. Link to comment
