April 23, 201511 yr CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GH Direct Steaming of video, transcoding audio via plex (docker) to a roku 3. I have not noticed any streaming issue to my PC. Core2 is pretty slow for Plex transcoding. It's just about half the performance per core recommended by Plex. Plex recommend 2000 CPU Marks per core for acceptable transcoding, the Q8300 is just over 1000.
April 23, 201511 yr Author Has anyone else experienced this with their setups on beta 15? I am also experiencing the same issue with videos stuttering on B15. The same videos streamed fine in B14. Could you post up your CPU, MB and amount of Memory and the device you are using to play your Media? System: Supermicro - C2SEA CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GH Memory: 3072 MB (max. installable capacity 4 GB) Network: eth0: 1000Mb/s - Full Duplex Direct Steaming of video, transcoding audio via plex (docker) to a roku 3. I have not noticed any streaming issue to my PC. From a telnet session, run htop from the command line. Play a video under the conditions that cause the shuttering. Observe what happens to the CPU percentages when the shuttering occurs. Does it go up or down? (May seem like a stupid question but my CPU percentage actually drops when the 'bad' events happen!)

The CPU only runs at 10-20% during playback. Either way I just realized plex is not using SMB, So my issue is not the exact same Frank's.
April 24, 201511 yr I actually had stalls from B14 & B15. I'm running it off a Windows 7 machines (didn't change a thing for 4 years). Once I upgraded from 5 to 6beta, I started having stalling issues. One odd thing I noticed was that if I ran the same movie twice (from 0:00), it would stall/stutter at the same point...but if I skip chapters, it doesn't happen at that point. The stalling points are different for each movie but a stall is pretty much guaranteed with EVERY viewing. I tried downgrading back to Unraid 5 but had samba issues (couldn't mount). Has anyone downgraded B15 to the latest Unraid 5? Any help would be appreciated.

(I assume you didn't do this before you installed version 6 or you would be asking this question.) Then reformat the Flash, install the latest version 5.0.6 and run make bootable. (You can use the instructions from LimeTech to do this is you should need them.) Then copy over the files that are in the config folder of your backup to the config folder on the Flash. You will be over-writing files so you will allow this to occur! Then copy ONLY the files from your saved config/shares folder to the flash drive's config/shares folder. You should then be able to boot into unRAID and find your configuration intact. Basically, you are doing the reverse of the instructions contained here: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Upgrading_to_UnRAID_v6 You will have to install any ver 5 plugins that you want and/or need! None of the version 6 stuff is going to work...

I thought that it was a hardware issue, but nothing has changed and I have ruled everything out. I've gone a few days without a stall, but the problem is intermittent on my end. My hardware is in my sig. craigr

If not, can you at least try switching the cable to the other port (maybe shutdown first, switch cable, then turn back on)? Curious if this has any impact.

You had mentioned removing an SSD from your LSI controller seemed to have solved the problem. Wanted to see if that is still the case or not. I have not seen the problem since removing the SSD drive from the SAS card. However,I have not used the system very much the past couple days. I primarily use the system for BD ISO playback in the theater, but also for small mkv cartoons when going to sleep. I've only encountered the problem once with the small low bit-rate mkv files; all other incidents have been with BD ISO. I did play a Downton Abbey BD ISO two nights ago and had no issues. Before transplanting the SSD from the LSI to the MB, Downton Abbey was freezing about once per episode. Downton Abbey is on my disc 9 which is connected to the LSI SAS card. We will probably watch something this evening. craigr

April 29, 201511 yr Another point. I have three Dune players hooked up to the network. I can have all three streaming the same, or a different BD ISO, simultaneously and it still all streams play smoothly. I agree that it's not a question of utilization. craigr
April 29, 201511 yr Ok, good. Frank was kind enough to purchase an Intel based NIC and confirmed for me today that resolved his problems, but you already have an Intel based NIC, so I think your issue was different from his. Considering bonienl in this thread also has dune players in his setup (and not experiencing issues), I have a feeling you resolved your issue already by moving the SSD to the on board controller as opposed to the LSI. Not sure still why that should have made a difference, but as long as its working and you are happy, I'm happy.
April 30, 201511 yr Author As jonp stated in the above post, he and I in a series of E-mails were discussing this problem and one of the items that came up was to replace the on-board Realtek NIC with a one that used another chipset. (As many of you might recall, Realtek drivers have been a big issue in the past.) I started investigating the available NIC adapters and quickly found that most of the cheaper cards that were in the $10 to $15 range either used the Realtek chip set or the chip set wasn't even mentioned. The lowest priced unit that seemed to be cut from a different fabric were Intel units. Intel advertises that their chip set generates fewer interrupts and have lower CPU usage than most other solutions. (Think dedicated audio cards vs on-board audio solutions.) Plus, Intel NIC's have been favorably recommended by many unRAID users over the past several years. The least expensive Intel one I could located (on Amazon.com) was this unit for about $32. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CY0P7G/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I got the Intel Gigabit CT PCI-E Network Adapter yesterday and installed it first into my Test Bed server. We tested it for over an hour and did not have a single audio dropout or picture stall. We then played two high bitrate HD streams simultaneously and still no issues for approximately another hour. In the past, we ALWAYS had a video and/or audio dropout with a few seconds to the most four or five minutes with the average being close to a minute between occurrences. So apparently the issue is in the Realtek hardware/drivers and/or their interaction with the underlining OS. From the standpoint that this issue can be 'fixed' by replacing the on-board Realtek NIC, one could consider that this issue has been solved. I just wonder if the problem is only in the Realtek driver, or is the issue really with any on-board NIC that uses the CPU, or is the issue with on-board NIC's only present with low-power CPU's. There are still a number of questions that do require further investigation. The problem seems to surface only with high bitrate data streams (think ~40MB/sec) that can be common with straight BluRay rips with the highest picture quality. If you are successfully playing these types of files, it might provide some clues if you would post your setup including the device you are using to actually play these files. EDIT: Please include which Realtek NIC chip is used on your motherboard. This information can generally be found in the motherboard manual.
