RobJ
Ok, good to hear. I'm new to reading SMART results. I was concerned about the End_to_End_Error and Spin_Retry_Count as they are both very close to the threshold. That is where they started as a brand new drive, notice that the VALUE and WORST are 100, essentially perfect. The problem is that on some of these newest attributes the 'SMART' developers have set the THRESH to be very close to the starting value. I suppose the thinking is that with Spin_Retry_Count you get 3 strikes and you're out, with End-to-End_Error you only get one strike and you're dead. Keep in mind though that for both of these cases, they have not yet decided (for whatever reason) that either of these is a critical attribute, one that fails the drive, even though both clearly are probably predictive of impending drive failure. mobias1313
I just cleared my last 4 drives after the other one was completely dead. I would love to have someone check these out just to be safe. I am still learning how to read these logs. So i apologize if there is nothing in them to be concerned about. mobias1313
Awesome. Thank you. Sorry if that was a waste of time. I know to look for the unallocated sectors from my one bad drive but aside from that I wasn't sure what else to keep an eye out for. Quote Link to comment
Automatic
Also, this is another drive that finished preclearing overnight. It seems to have a different read value that what it thought it wrote and failed the preclear. Is there anything I can do to attempt to fix it? It's out of warranty so no RMA. I'd say use it in a "Windows" computer, where an occasional crash or data corruption would never be noticed. Unless it is power supply related, there is little else you can do. Joe L. I presume it's when the HDD itself fixes corrupt/unreadable data, and, it seems to have jumped a hell of a lot higher during the test. You are trying to interpret the RAW value for that attribute. You cannot. It is not a simple "count" as it is for some others. Only the manufacturer knows how to interpret the RAW value, and they are not telling. The NORMALIZED VALUE is 100, and has not changed, and is nowhere near the affiliated failure threshold. Given only the newest of the smart reports, that looks like a great drive. Oh yes, ALL drives perform hardware error correction. Yours is no exception. Some report it, some only report when it fails. Joe L. Quote Link to comment

I was looking at the normalized value and then I saw something that made me think not to trust it (This was a few days ago, at the end of the preclear but before badblocks), so I just instantly ignored it when posting this thread. Now I look back at it, I can't for the life of me remember what caused me to not accept the normalized value, however, it was stupid of me to take the RAW value as a meaningful integer. Thanks again. Mettbrot
New drive, ran two cycles, is everything okay? I get that 0 Sectors pending reallocation is good but I am always doubtful about those"pre-fail" values :-P preclear.txt Quote Link to comment
bw1
I setup unRAID 5.0-rc11 on a box to preclear 3 4TB Seagate drives and when I started preclear it said that it was going to start on sector 63 instead of sector 64. This is version 1.13, and started with no -a or -A. The server is set to MBR: 4K-aligned for the Default partition format. I thought I read that preclear would default to start on sector 64 (4K aligned) based on the default partition format and also for >2.2TB drives. Potential bug or user error ? Quote Link to comment
mobias1313
I had the exact same problem with my Seagate 3tb drives. I just added the -A switch and went let it go. Quote Link to comment

RobJ
I precleared an older hard drive and I am a little concerned about the S.M.A.R.T. values. Spin_Retry_Counts should not happen but the value haven't raised in over a year, so I don't think it's a real issue. High_Fly_Writes is not a critical attribute, and is currently (and has been for some time) just an experimental item. If you examine numerous SMART reports to see how High_Fly_Writes is handled, you can clearly see that they have attached a dummy routine to it. When a High_Fly_Write event occurs, they increment the RAW value and decrement the VALUE, until VALUE reaches one, then they leave VALUE alone, so it never reaches zero. Obviously just a dummy routine. The VALUE and WORST for Spin_Retry_Counts is 100, essentially perfect, so nothing to worry about. Quote Link to comment
Tyler
Hi guys I'm new to unRAID, so setting things up for the first time (running v5 RC11), and running my first lot of pre-clears. I'm currently pre-clearing 4 drives: new 1TB WD Black (WD1002FAEX), connected to MB SATA3 port - I plan to use this as a cache drive new 3TB WD Red (WD30EFRX), connected to M1015 new 3TB WD Green (WD30EZRX), connected to M1015 old 1.5TB WD Green (WD15EADS), connected to M1015 - I started the 1.5TB drive about 12 hours after the other 3 All the pre-clears are still in progress, and everything seemed to be going ok. As expected the 1TB Black was well ahead of the other 2 to begin with, but it now seems to have slowed down massively on the post-read phase. I've got email notifications going, so here are the snippets from them: Pre Read finished on /dev/sda ( 1,000,194,048,000 of 1,000,204,886,016 bytes read) Pre Read Elapsed Time: 3:05:54 Total Elapsed Time: 3:05:55 Disk Temperature: 37C, Using Block size of 8,225,280 Bytes Calculated Read Speed - 89 MB/s Zeroing Disk /dev/sda Done. So it'll likely finish at about the same time as the 1TB disk. The only obvious difference between this drive and the others is that it's connected to a SATA port on the MB, the others are connected to an M1015. But the pre-read speeds and zeroing for the drive were fine, and nothing else has changed. I had a search in the forums for issues with post-read and couldn't find anything. Has anyone got any ideas what cause this? Or is it something I shouldn't be concerned about. Quote Link to comment

Drives over 2.2TB do not use an MBR based partition. The -A and -a options of preclear_disk.sh are completely ignored. There is a partition created to fool older utilities into thinking the disk is entirely allocated. That "protective" partition is always starting on sector 1 and is for the full 2.2TB the older MBR style partition could define. It is not used at all by the reiserfs file system. It uses a GPT partition, and that always is 4k aligned. Joe L. Quote Link to comment
Joe L.
It's now 6% into its post-read phase and running at ~65MB/s. Completely normal, as the post read is also verifyin all the bytes read are zero. The pre-read just sends the output to /dev/null and usually runs at 2 or 3 times the speed of the post read. Quote Link to comment

I probably should have read up on what the script actually does in detail. Just to give things more of a test, I ran a 2nd preclear on the same 1TB WD Black disk, and it went significantly faster the 2nd time: 11:43 vs 24:16 The only thing I did between the 2 runs was power down the box for about an hour to re-route some cabling and install a few new fans. I've now precleared a total of 5 disks, and this was the only run that was slow. Fingers crossed this was just one of those weird occurrences. Quote Link to comment
Ockingshay
Hi, Just attempted to preclear a second wd red 3tb before i went on holiday 5 days ago and i've come back to what appears to be stuck at 0% simplefeatures says: Preclear in progress... Pre-Read. 0% @ 136 MB/s (0:03:13) When i remote into the server the screen shows what is in the attachment, so it's doing something. I don't even know to to begin searching to see if someone has had this before, but i'll have a look now around the forums. is the drive DOA? EDIT* no mention of the drive in /boot/preclear reports. I can see start, report and finish files for the 1st hdd i did, but nothing for this new drive. syslog is massive 2.5GB and states over and over: Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Unhandled error code Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] Result: hostbyte=0x04 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: sd 0:0:3:0: [sdg] CDB: cdb[0]=0x88: 88 00 00 00 00 01 5d 50 73 30 00 00 00 08 00 00 Mar 21 04:43:45 Ruby kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sdg, sector 5860520752 Quote Link to comment
mobias1313
Did you check to see what the smart report says. This would not be in the preclear reports folder because it has not yet completed. I also just had a brand new red drive that did the same thing. In my smart report it showed a large number of pending reallocation sectors and errors. If you see anything like that then the drive is dead. Quote Link to comment

How do i run a smart report? i don't see an option in preclear_disk and because the drive isn't part of the array i cannot run a test using the webgui. Quote Link to comment
