splnut
Just looking for confirmation that my drive is bad. I am not home at the moment, but will check the connection to the drive to ensure its secure. I have not touched anything with the server and the latest changes were connecting a usb hub for use with a VM hours prior to the errors. splnut
I went home on my lunch break and checked the cords. I'm using a locking sata cable and disco/reco the cable. I also moved it to the onboard port vs the expansion card. When I booted back up, I still have the red x. I will swap the cable with a different one tonight to see if I get a different result. Chris Pollard
The disk will stay red once unaid marks it failed. Just looking to get a smart report at this point to see if it offers any clues as to whether the disk is good or not. Link to comment
splnut
I powered it back up and Unraid shows the smart report completed without error. According to the wiki all I need to do is stop the array, remove the drive, start the array, stop the array, assign the drive and start again to rebuild the drive. Looking for confirmation before pressing forward. splnut
So I started a data rebuild after reviewing the smart report. I just checked on it and see that Disk 3 now has a lot of errors and is mimicking what I originally saw with disk 6 (I swapped disk 3 and 6 sata ports earlier). I canceled the data rebuild and stopped the array. Now on the array devices tab, disk 3 is shown as "missing". Using logic I would have to assume that the port on the sata controller is causing issues and I should just replace the controller. The syslog and the smart report are pretty identical to my original post, including Dec 29 00:39:58 Tower kernel: ata9.00: irq_stat 0x08000000, interface fatal error Dec 29 00:39:58 Tower kernel: ata9: SError: { UnrecovData 10B8B BadCRC } Diags: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7_9qtl9cqE2bmQ0OHlpNzhVcjg/view?usp=sharing Link to comment

splnut
Before I dug out my sata cables, I threw in an old sata card and everything is working fine so far (rebuilding data now). Thanks for your time and information. Link to comment
splnut
Well, I checked my console today and see that the same culprit disk is now showing 1 pending sector and 1 uncorrectable. Since I do not currently have any spare available to rebuild/preclear this drive, I am looking to see if I can repair the drive. The wiki says "IF YOU ARE SURE THE DRIVE IS GOOD.....", so I am looking for confirmation on the smart report. Based on the report below, would it be safe to rebuild the data? The disk is not disabled or red balled currently. smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-linux-4.1.15-unRAID] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Western Digital Green Device Model: WDC WD30EZRX-00D8PB0 Serial Number: WD-WMC4N1565088 LU WWN Device Id: 5 0014ee 6aecf614e Firmware Version: 80.00A80 User Capacity: 3,000,592,982,016 bytes [3.00 TB] Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical Rotation Rate: 5400 rpm Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: ACS-2 (minor revision not indicated) SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 6.0 Gb/s) Local Time is: Wed Jan 20 16:14:07 2016 EST SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. JorgeB
The disk is not disabled or red balled currently. In that case why rebuild? Rebuilding won't probably won't clear the pending sector, if the disk really has bad sector(s) it will fail, preclearing might clear them, but you would need a spare. 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 1 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 200 200 000 Old_age Offline - 1 Pending sectors are never good, only 1 could be a false positive, but doubt it since this this disk dropped offline before, I would replace it asap, at a minimum do an extended SMART test.
