Windows 10 VM and Audio output

Recommended Posts

I have built my new unRAID machine with a Gigabyte X99-SLI motherboard which has an onboard audio chip that I would like to use for audio in this VM, when I check in unRAID it only seems to detect the HD audio with the optical output and my GTX 970 via HDMI. I do not have HDMI on my monitor and my speakers do not have optical input. Is there anyway to output motherboard audio without using the HD optical connection or the HDMI option?

Yes that's right I am using the analogue connections on the motherboard but get no audio. When I check in Windows settings I cannot change from the optical audio option to analogue.

Any solution to this problem? I went out and bought the X99P-SLI and plan on using the onboard audio.

Overlooking you XML, things look in order, however you should also pass the GPU audio even if you don't plan to use it.

Why? Well you can't use it elsewhere, and others have reported stability issues without passing it.

You can easily add a 2nd audio device in the VM management page by hitting the plus to the left.

Have you tried installing the Realtek drivers (assume its a Realtek), as opposed to the default Windows ones?

Edit: I have the exact same board as you and don't have this issue...

Let me look in to my drivers.

See attached picture, does yours show a different driver/version?

This is not a global problem, I have an X99 Gigabyte board and the analog audio (+HDMI audio) work fine.

Have you checked that it's not a hardware issue in either the audio socket, cable or speakers?

Any possibility to boot a live cd/USB with a Linux version to check if it works?

And a last must ask even though it's most likely not the case, but did you connect the cable to the right socket on the motherboard?

I suspect that the root issue here is in Windows, actually. I have previously (although not in unRAID setups) had problems with Windows being finicky about which audio outputs were enabled/disabled and presedence.

Could you show a screenshot of your output devices from Windows? (Right click on the sound icon in the taskbar)

I managed to resolve the issue, there is a setting in the Realtek HD Audio manager that lets you disable the automatic detection when an audio device is connected, disabling this resolved the issue.

Figured it'd be something like that.  Glad you got it resolved.
