April 9, 201610 yr Hello, so i wanted to setup unRAID on my computer but i run into a problem, after the program boots and it loads on the server, i can't access the webui from any of the pc's on my network, and i don't think the computer has a valid ip either. Seeing as i could access the server on another computer doing the exact same thing and using the same usb device i am starting to think is a lan driver issue or a compatibility one, also my keyboard doesn't work when i try to type after the program has finish loading, i already tried connecting it to another usb ports even using 4 different keyboards. If you want to know more about it just ask me, it's quite hard to explain since i'm new to this i don't know what you might want to know to figure what is wrong. I already tried: Using another usb device Tried setting a static IP by editing the usb contets on the config file Using the beta release of unRAID Updated the motherboard frimeware to the last version Enable virtualization features on the motherboard, and disable some features that may cause conflict just as Wake on LAN Tried aroud 3 PCI Lan cards (all with a realltek controller) Tried with the same usb using the same method in another PC and it work perfectly fine, i could access the webui using http://tower with 0 problems Tried with another network switch/router My computer components: CPU: FX-8350 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P rev. 2 Hard Drive: WD Blue 1tb Memory: NovaTech DDR3 4GB GPU: XFX GT 220 EDIT 1: I just got a wireless keyboard working on the non beta version of unRAID! EDIT 2: I made a memtest and turns out one of the memory sticks was broken, i replace it and it is all more consistent now. I attached a diagnostics to this message. tower-diagnostics-20160409-1041.zip
April 9, 201610 yr If you've got terminal access after unraid boots, then type diagnostics This will copy diagnostics.zip to your USB. Post that file here and it'll help work out exactly what is going on. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
April 9, 201610 yr Just saw your keyboard isn't working either.... my bad. Sent from my LG-H815 using Tapatalk
April 9, 201610 yr there are 2 Options I can think of. 1. Watch unRAID load and try and note the IP it is grabbing. 2. access your routers IP map. 192.168.x.x (usually 192.168.0.1 in my experience) Either way you are trying to find your servers IP, which you will then type into your browsers address bar. For me this was applicable one time after setting a static ip in the webGUI. it decided to remain dynamic and this was the easiest way for me to reconnect, hope it helps
April 9, 201610 yr The keyboard not working after boot is a bit worrying. I would always expect a directly plugged in keyboard and monitor to work without issues.
April 9, 201610 yr Just so we aren't making any assumptions here. Is it actually booting? Can you see the boot menu when it first starts? Can you select memtest from the boot menu? If so let it run memtest for a while.
April 9, 201610 yr Author Hello and thanks for your quick answers! Yes it boots, but it gets stuck on tower login as i cannot type anything, i just tried with a wireless keyboard and no luck. Also when it loads there is no IP address easy to spot, i only see that it is requesting an ip to DHCP Server but no ip address to speak off, also i can't access my router since it is blocked by my ISP. However if i use the non beta version of unRAID i manage to see a menssage at the very top of the screen that says "cannot obtain IP address".
April 9, 201610 yr Are you plugging your keyboard into a USB3 slot? If so, try a USB2 slot. Second thing, find the IP address of some other device that is attaching to your router. It will be in the following form XXX.XXX.XXX. Now assign a static IP address using this form XXX.XXX.XXX.100 Where the XXX's are copied from that IP address that you found in the previous step. This assume that you don't have more then 90 devices connecting to your router. (OH, unless you are using an editor which understands how linux treats the Enter Key, DON'T hit the enter key when you are editing the .cfg files. *** LT may have 'fixed' this issue but it is better to safe than sorry. ***)

I used notepad++ i have no linux pc avilable and i didn't press enter i also added the corresponding subnetmask and gateway. I just tried to type with the non beta version and my wireless keyboard (with a transmiter) seems to work on the same USB 2.0 port i was trying before, but still no luck with the wired keyboard. I tried typing typing ifconfig eth0 to see the ip adress but there is no ip adress.

I tried typing typing ifconfig eth0 to see the ip adress but there is no ip adress. Most of the common home routers use 192.168.1.xxx as the base for assigning IP addresses and you will never have an issue with finding an assigned device if the address is between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.255 It also seems to me that there is at least one company uses 192.168.0.XXX. Now, you said you had a router from your ISP. That is another ball game and that device may not be be configured like most of the common home routers and the first three numbers may be entirely different. By the way, you said that you did get the wireless keyboard to work. Please use it and get that diagnostics file by typing diagnostics after you have logged in. Post it up with your next post. That is vital at this point!
April 9, 201610 yr Author Yes, sorry i been trying to do that but i can't find any zip file on my usb device, the console said that it was created insde \boot\logs but that folder is nowhere to be found on the usb, i should be able to see hidden files so i don't know where i can find this diagnostics file. Edit: Just to clarify yes i already try setting a static ip adress with the config file and it did not work so i am currently use the default network.cfg.
April 9, 201610 yr /boot is your flash drive as seen from the unRAID command line. \\tower\flash is your flash drive as seen over the network. If you are just plugging your flash into your PC just look in the logs folder.

I am afraid it didn't work, i even tried with another flash drive. Another thing i noticed is that sometimes an IP will appear i tried acessing the http:\\tower\ but no luck same with the ip adress that appears on screen, i even tried pingin it and get timed out, it rarely happens tho so it is not repeatable
April 9, 201610 yr You can also try this command: cp /var/log/syslog /boot/syslog.txt When you run it, if it is successful, it just returns a new prompt. I just tried it and it took about a second. It will put a file named syslog.txt in the root of your Flash Drive.
April 9, 201610 yr Author I am tring the memtest at the moment, but i don't understand much. i am going to edit this post with the results, after that i am going to try the command. EDIT 1: I couldn't finish the test, i lost video output before it could finish but i mange to catch glimpse before it went dark and there were 47 errors, so assuming memtest86 only test for memory errors this would mean that one of the memory sticks it is faulty, i am trying a new module and re-doing memtest. EDIT 2: With the new memory stick it seems to work more consistent, no errors on memtest. Now every time i restart i get an ip, still cannot access the WebGui with "http://tower" or with the local ip. I also managed to get the diagnostic file, i will attach it to this message tower-diagnostics-20160409-1041.zip
April 9, 201610 yr Author Okay i re tried all the test before now with the okay memory stick, still in the same state as before
April 10, 201610 yr From your Syslog, I found that this boot got address 192.168.1.10 from your router. It most likely will get this address the next time that it tries. Can you find it in the router table? (The router is mostly likely on 192.168.1.1 Be sure to look in whatever Documentation that your IPS provided you when they installed the modem/router to find the default username/password. IF not, you can often find the defaults by googling the router model number and a question about the defaults. ) Try the address http://192.168.1.10 in your browser to gain access to the GUI. (That is what is happening in the background when you type http://tower ) (I always use the IP addresses to access my two servers because my cheap router doesn't provide DNS service for user assigned IP addresses! ) I am assuming that this is a new install. Why did you chose to go with 6.1.8 rather than 6.1.9? OH, by the way, if your only access is via the terminal, you should should be able to type powerdown to shut the system down gracefully.
April 10, 201610 yr Author Hi! i tried to access my router before but it is blocked by my ISP with a password that they generate, i contacted them for the password but they refuse to give it to me, i also tried cracking it with a dictionary but with i had no results in 2 days, so i can't access the router, I tried accessing with the assigned ip address as well as with the htttp:\\tower and i get the same result (I also tried with multiple computers on the network and i get the same result). And i'm using 6.1.8 because i am constantly jumping between versions, since maybe they could change the results. 6.1.8 was the one i was using at the time i finish the memtest and tried the command diagnostics. Would you like me to send you a diagnostics with another specific version of unRAID? Thanks for taking your time to try to help me!!

As far as I'm concerned you are effectively giving them access and the ability to be able to hack into your network whenever they like. When you talk to them, who ever answers the phone just ask immediately to speak to their boss. The router is your first line of defense against intruders and you've already let your ISP past that line

I fail to understand their logic but it is what it is. If it were I, I would get my own router and use that one. I would bet that your WIFI is also being handled through their modem/router. That makes my choice a bit more complex and more difficult to setup as you would have to setup all of your WIFI devices again. I don't know if this is typo but it should be http://tower in your browser. the \\tower is actually used in Window Explorer (the file browser). If you run that in Windows Explorer, you should be able to see the Flash Drive. No, I was just curious if you were running the older version for some operational issues. I can't recall any issues that would give the problem you seem to have encountered. At this point, I would just keep running 6.1.8 until we figure this out. The only error that I am seeing that could be a problem is this one: Apr 9 10:40:29 Tower kernel: read_file: error 2 opening /boot/config/super.dat But that could be because the file has not yet been generated and copied to the flash drive. (I believe this file is probably written when the server goes through a proper shutdown.) You could check and see if the file is found with this command: ls -al /boot/config/super.dat If you get a failure with that one, try this one: ls -al /boot/config/super.dat And see if you get a list of files.

It is probably a random sequence of characters. Problem is that it may not be unique to just your modem. It could well be for every modem that they service. So if a bad guy gets ahold of it, he could easy compromise your network and access your files. (I think I know what they are trying to do is to prevent you from 'elevating' your service level. However, my modem (which I own) does not have a password on my side of the connection but my ISP has locked down that portion of the modem so that I can't do an 'upgrade'. Only they can from their side. And my Router is downstream physically from the modem. So I control it completely and I have locked out access to it from the WAN side of the router for my security.) It seems to me that one can use two routers in series but EVERYTHING on your network (the LAN side) has be to connected to your router and then through their modem/router for security. Then if bad guy gains access to their router, your router will then protect your computers and files. If I have missed anything (you can probably google for instructions and tips on how to do this), perhaps someone who has done it could jump in with their thoughts. But this discussion is a bit out topic. Let's see if we can figure out what is going on with your server...
April 10, 201610 yr Author I wish i could change my ISP but it is the only available on my area with a decent connection. I tried both commands (they seem to be the same the same command). I get the message: cannot access /boot/config/super.dat No such file or directory I don't know if this is typo but it should be http://tower in your browser. the \\tower is actually used in Window Explorer (the file browser). If you run that in Windows Explorer, you should be able to see the Flash Drive. Yes this was a typo, and i wasn't able to see the flash drive when i tried that on windows explorer, i got timed out. BTW: i been shutting down the server with the command: "poweroff" (i don't know if is not as good as "powerdown", but i will use it from now on)
