Just upgraded to Windows 7 from XP and whenever I try and extract the syslinux file to the flash drive i get

C:\>c:\syslinux.exe -ma f:

Accessing physical drive: Access is denied.

Did not successfully update the MBR; continuing...

I can copy files directly to the flash drive through windows explorer so I don't think that it is write protected.  I am truely not too familiar with Vista/Windows 7, so I assume it may be a setting when extracting to flash drives that I am missing?

You need to run the command prompt as Administrator and then run the syslinux command.  Vista/Windows 7 default you to a limited account when you access executables, including running the command prompt.

makes perfect sense.  Thank you for clarifying

sorry to resurrect an old thread......

I'm trying to run the syslinux command to my USB drive but it appears that nothing happens.

I'm running Win7. I tried the Run command,  e:\syslinux.exe -ma i:  (I extracted the syslinux contents to the root of my e: drive and the usb stick is in the i: drive of my win7 comp)

but I got the same message as the 1st post.  I then tried using cmd (right-click and chose Run as Adminstrator).  I switched to the e:\,  I then typed syslinux.exe -ma i: (it looks like nothing happen)

I have the setting "show all hidden files"  but nothing is shown on the usb stick.

Any ideas?  Any other info needed?

Also set the "Show system files" option.  Otherwise, they will be hidden from you too.

Thanks!  It is there. :D

Can boot unraid of hard disk? If no boot of flash usb?

Yes it is possible.  Do a search on the forum and have a look through the unRAID wiki.  There should be a section in the Best of the Forums or Topical Index that should get you pointed in the right direction.

Why would you like to boot unRAID from HDD? The flash stick is a perfect option.

Perhaps the MB does not support boot from usb.

then its possible to let your usb stick emulate itself as a hdd cd or floppy, which means teh bios wont pick it up as a usb device.

Not always.  It entirely depends on the BIOS on the motherboard.  I've got some older motherboards where usb was barely supported, and will only boot from floppy (or the hard-disk), not even from CD.

terrastrife is correct, some BIOSs require you to enable the 'Boot USB Floppy', 'Boot USB ZIP', 'Boot USB HDD' or 'Boot USB CDROM' (Pending mobo/BIOS support as well). In some cases, I've had to enable the above to get a USB drive booting. If you have a mobo that doesn't have the above options, looks like your in trouble. I would like to know a work around as I have a old mobo that I'd like to use for a unraid server too. Thanks.

i actually meant its possible to fake a usb device as a hdd, cd or floppy, and the bios actually thinks its one of those. and itll come up in the correct boot order option if you fake hdd for example it comes up in the hdd priority list. itll even show up as a hdd during detection, not a usb device.

I've got a MB that has no usb boot option.

But in BIOS I have HDD as 1st boot device, but it really boots from the usb stick.  ::)

Had no lock with the boot at first, then removed the BIOS battery and with all settings reset, it booted!
