So I just started my machine yesterday with brand 3 brand new 8TB hard drives, plus a 128GB SSD cache.

It's been syncing for 11 hours and I'm 85% done... so at that rate it'll be 13 hours.

Question 1)

Once the sync is complete, how should I transfer my old data back onto it?  I have maybe 1.5TB of data on an external USB 3.0 drive.

Do I just log in as root on the terminal and copy from there?  Will it be mounted automatically in /media like a lot of distros do, or will I have to manually dmesg, to get the correct sd[x], and mount it manually?  Where do I copy the data to?  I'm assuming I should have single partition somewhere that is 16GB.

Question 2)

What kind of changes can I make to the system and have it still function?

I want to use GPU passthrough on an Ubuntu (or Mint) VM and use this machine as my desktop (like it was before I put unRAID on it).

I haven't set anything up yet, but on the VM tab I see that I can select my video card.  I only have one video card so this is contrary to what I've read.  I thought if you only have one card the host steals it and it's unavailable to give to a VM.

Question 3)

Optical drive... I have a BluRay drive that I'd like to use to back up my BluRays now that I have 16TB of storage.  Is it possible to give this to my guest VM?  If not, I have, in the past, ripped BluRays from within Docker by passing the block device to the container... maybe that's preferable anyway, but still wanted to ask about giving it to a VM.

1) Unassigned Devices plugin to mount. I normally just use the builtin mc (Midnight Commander) to copy/move.

Good to know.  I'll probably use rsync if it's available.  I'm unfamiliar with Midnight Commander.  In fact I enter it accidentally all the time on Linux machines when I typo mc instead of mv and I don't even know how to properly exit it ;-)

Major functions (including exit) are F-keys that are labeled at the bottom.  Rsync is available.  If you are comfortable at the command line you may want to install the NerdPack plugin for additional functionality (via Community Applications ).

It did not mount automatically before or after doing a `modprobe ntfs`

Again, where should I copy the data to?

I see /mnt/disk1 disk2 cache user and user0

I'm assuming you typoed and meant that you would have a single partition of 16TB because you have 2 8TB data drives. This answer is based on that assumption, so if I interpreted poorly just ignore me.

No. Unraid doesn't work like that. You will have 2 8TB volumes located at /mnt/disk1 and /mnt/disk2, and a 128GB volume at /mnt/cache. As soon as you create a user share, you will see a new entry in the /mnt/user location corresponding to the name of that share, and as you copy data to /mnt/user/sharename, you will see that data show up on /mnt/disk1/sharename,  /mnt/disk2/sharename, or /mnt/cache/sharename depending on what properties you gave the share. The /mnt/user structure is generated from all the root folders on all the data and cache drives.

So... if you want to manually make sure a specific set of data is copied to a specific physical disk, you can use the /mnt/diskX locations, or if you want unraid to make the decisions for you, use the /mnt/user locations. Just DON'T ever move data from /mnt/diskX/sharename to /mnt/user/sharename or vice versa. Since the locations are actually the same but with different mount points you will end up deleting data that way.

Use the "Unassigned Devices" plugin to manage your USB drives. It will show you the mount point, should be something under /mnt/disks.

BTW, I'd install Community Applications plugin first, it makes finding plugins and dockers much more convenient.

This has the ability to mount USB drives as well?

Okay, I'm surprised there isn't any kind of official link there.  Is there even a list of supported plugins / apps?

Limetech "officially" supports only what is in the stock installation. Community support is very strong, if an app shows up in the "community apps" plugin it has at least had a support thread started on the forum.

However... If you have major issues with the system and need support directly from limetech, you will be asked to recreate the issue WITHOUT any of the community apps enabled.

The major upside of unraid is the extremely active community. We have loads of talented people contributing all sorts of stuff all the time, including supporting stuff not directly endorsed by limetech.

Limetech doesn't support any plugin / app that is not included with the base OS.  Limetech does however link to Community Applications within their documentation

To gain access to a wider set of applications, see this post in the Lime Technology forums for information on installing the Community Applications plugin. This plugin will allow you to add more applications to your system through an app store interface.

NOTE: The applications available on this store come in multiple forms (containers and plugins) and are not directly supported by Lime Technology. Support for community maintained Docker containers can be found in the Docker Containers subforum.

Did you find a solution to pass your bluray drive to a VM?
