File X-Fer, double check my math

'time rsync' output is this:

sent 250,857,077,197 bytes  received 8,651 bytes  69,595,529.43 bytes/sec
total size is 250,795,829,886  speedup is 1.00

real    499m17.287s
user    126m48.408s
sys     37m43.405s

My math says 250,857,077,197 bytes = 0.25TB.  499m = 8.3 hours

So if I have 17.4TB to move...... 0.25TB * 4 = 1TB, 8..3 hours * 4 = 33.2 hours, so 33.2 hours per TB.

17TB * 33.2 hours = 564.4 hours / 24 hours in a day = 23.5

23.5 days to move 17 TB?

Is my math correct?

Sounds about right.  The units check on your math is gives the expected values. Only problem is that a TB is often 1024GB (This is one of the most confusing aspects of what K M, G, and T actually mean!)   But that error would have only a small effect on the end result.  Hard disks are so large today that we often forget how much data is truly on them.

I suspect, you are setting up a backup server and want to determine how long it will take.  You might want to consider breaking down the copy into small pieces if you don't want to tie up your LAN connections for certain intervals during the day.

It also varies wildly depending upon the number of files.

250Gig composed of very small files takes far longer than 250Gig composed of multi gigabyte sized files.
