Unraid problems (parity disc damage)

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am starting a new topic because I have a damage unraid (one disc with error, and one parity disc with error).

I am not very techy sadly, quite a newbie...

If anyone can offer some help on how to proceed, then I would be very happy.

I have added a photo of the array, and a diagnostic.

Discs look okay regarding SMART warnings in Dashboard. Photo enclosed.

Syslog Server is setup, yes. Photo enclosed.

How do you suggest to proceed ?

Since you rebooted I can't tell from syslog what happened.

Diagnostics only include syslog since last boot.

If it was setup then it will have saved syslog from before boot. You should attach that to your NEXT post so we can maybe see why the disks were disabled.

You're using SASLP controllers, these have several known issues, including controller crashing and dropping disks without a reason, can't say for sure without the syslog but likely what happened here, since both disabled disks are on the same controller, though it could also be a for example a cable issue, in any case and if possible I suggest replacing them with LSI HBAs.

I was on a 2 weeks trip, this happened before I left. I think I made a diagnostics before I left, I am adding it here (2x diagnostics in a zip file). And I made a photo of the screen as I tried to power down the raid at that time.

For the syslog, will I have to power down the unraid, and remove the usb stick to find the syslog before boot ?

@johnnie.black  I dont know about these drivers, I am not at all techy. Should I change drivers ? Can I change drivers? And if so, how is this done ?

  • Community Expert

I suggest you replace the controllers, not drivers, use one the recommended LSI models, any LSI with a SAS2008/2308/3008/3408 chipset in IT mode, e.g., 9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, 9400-8i, etc and clones, like the Dell H200/H310 and IBM M1015, these latter ones need to be crossflashed.

Is this hardware controllers ? Or software ?

So these are 8 port controllers ? So I would need 4 of them (as I can see in my country they are 3-400 dollars a piece, 1200-1600 dollars for 3 ?

It also should be said the server has worked great for a number of years, and now it has problems with 2 of the 10TB discs. So could this not be a disc issue, rather than controller ?

It wasn't a disk problem almost certainly, most likely a controller issue, possibly cable/power issue.

Ok, I see. So how should I proceed ? Can the damaged parity disc be build up again ? Or how do you recommend me to proceed from here ?

Did someone help you build the server originally?

I don't think a non-techy can build a 30-disk 108-TB array that works for years without ever experiencing issues.

Given you have a rather massive server, I would recommend you get help so you don't end up making avoidable newbie mistakes.

Btw, you have 2 parity with 2 failed drives so it's possible to rebuild.

The problem is, as what johnnie said, your controller might be the cause which can exacerbate your current situation.

For example, more drives may drop offline while you are rebuilding, and that's not good.

I bought the server, and added discs (which is quite simple). A friend helped me setup Lime unraid. And its been working fine since. Had an issue in december 2019 where I lost my Plex library, here is a link to that support tread:

But besides this its been working fine. Could it be a loose connection on the controller ? Or how can I be sure it is the controller ? It seems quite costly to exchance these as I guess it would need 4 new controllers (if they should all be exchanged) ?

Depends, if replacing the controllers is an option do it then rebuild, if not at least replace/swap the cables on those disks and rebuild, if it happens again grab diags before rebooting.

Johnny Black asked for syslog. Should I boot down and remove the flash drive to find these syslogs ?

The syslog is lost on reboot, so the one form this issue is gone, but if it happens again download diags before rebooting.

Ok, thanks. Maybe you have some tip of where to obtain these controllers at a reasonable price ? Is it just a simple swop ? Or would there be a need for software update, drivers etc ?

Also, swopping cables, is that not the same as moving the drive to a new bay or dock (not sure what its called) ? The server can hold 36 drives.

They can usually be found on ebay for a reasonable price, look for one that specifies IT mode, e.g. this one is considered a reputable seller, and in that case it's plug'n play.

If your server has swappable bays, then yes, but it would be best to swap to bays that don't use the same mini SAS cable, one cable connects to 4 bays.

Thank you for the link, those prices did not hurt the wallet as much. Would any of the suggested models do? Or is higher number better controllers ie 9400-8i ? Its about 60 dollars each for some of these, but 9400-8i looks to be around 200 dollars.

9201-8i, 9211-8i, 9207-8i, 9300-8i, 9400-8i

  • Community Expert

Except with SSDs they will all perform similarly, so I would recommend going for a 9211-8i or 9207-8i.

  • Author

Should I think ahead for SSDs (or probably it will be a while before we get 10tb SSDs). If so, which model should work with normal drives and SSD?

  • Community Expert

For SSDs the 9300-8i or 9400-8i would be best.
