January 28, 201115 yr I am requesting the package "screen". I understand that there are ways to do what screen does already but none as as convenient.
January 28, 201115 yr Author hehe cool but this is the unRAID roadmap not the unMENU one I could just install it myself but I think it has worth as a default for all. Or at least it worth considering

Or at least it worth considering I agree. It is very useful for those people clearing drives. It would be a nice addition to the basic unRAID. Joe L.
January 28, 201115 yr It is useful, but I tend to think that this should be a community plugin/addon. if we concentrate on a nice consolidated way of doing the plugins/addons then limetech does not need to be invovled in handling these requests. Kernel requests, yes, but basic apps, I think we can do it, we need a repository and a method of presentation and coordinated installation. the screen packages can be dropped into /boot/extra very easily. I would much rather see openssh as part of the base environment as it provides secure terminal services along with sftp file transfer and rsync support. Again, we can do this as a community, but this one requires key management backup/restore upon reboots.
January 29, 201115 yr Author you make an interesting point I would be exited with a package manager. I like unMEANU type projects but I like to run bare minum required (hence unRAID) so adding the unMENU suite to install screen is not sensible to me. I agree with SSH etc being more important as that is more of a Limetech only thing. Perhaps we should fork and discuss the most elegant package manager we can do. I reckon it could be very simple and achievable with simple web hosting
February 2, 201115 yr It is very useful for those people clearing drives. I have installed screen using unmenu So... to use the thing, do I just telnet in to unraid as normal, login, and then type screen? thanks
February 3, 201115 yr here is a good link for SCREEN commands http://ss64.com/bash/screen.html Its annoying that some of the familiar keys don't work the same as in putty. And scrolling the terminal window is totally screwed up. Takes a while to NOT do that. But being able to resume a preclear window is very handy!

February 13, 201115 yr Please keep unRAID as slim and efficient as possible and then let the user's make the choices to load it up with tools and utilities.
February 13, 201115 yr Author Sure lets remove every binary and make users learn what they need ... I mean whats this ls thing for But seriously there are some functions that should be available without addons. Addons are a huge step forward but they are not the be all and end all of unRAID.. otherwise whats the point of a feature request/roadmap section... lets just tell all users go away and do it yourself

The other huge reason is to enable a plug-in system so everything does not have to be included in the base unRAID distribution. basically unMENU proved to Tom that a structure that supported plug-in packages would benefit many users of unRAID. I think Tom is keeping a balance between what is needed in the Linux kernel vs. what can be added via a slackware package. Right now the new udev system is keeping him awake nights. Joe L.
February 14, 201115 yr Author Agreed. We do have to be careful though. In essence almost every request could be answered with "Install it yourself" or "I think this is more important" and whilst on the face of it may be correct you could extend that all the way to almost the whole distro.
