BWS001

I recently upgraded from my 10 year old 4770K and 16GB of ram to something a little faster a 5900X and 64GB.. Things didn't go as planned as I couldn't get the MSI motherboard to see the HBA ( Dell H310 6Gbps SAS HBA w/ LSI 9211-8i) I had built a desktop with an ASUS MB and it saw the card and the drives so it's now in the server.. Everything works and seems to work well.. But the HD activity light flashes ever 2 seconds It may be in sync with the heartbeat on the card.. my case (thor v2) has massive lights so it's a little distracting.. Any ideas?? The option to tape over the lights is on the table..

I have a feeling I'm using the cache drives wrong.. (because I seem to be killing them) I thought I read that domains, appdata and isos should be on the cache.. But my VM's are just killing the cache drives.. I would assume that static stuff is what should be on the cache.. Thanks

Missing in the gui.. but it was configured there is a .cfg file and it showed when I rebooted.. I've included Diags And then I have things like this... I have 2 shows... One group in the share and the other doesn't. All in the same rosewill cage.. interesting... I guess I will move one of the parity drives to the other cage.. and will check on the power situation... I have power available that I didn't before.. wonder if I have a Y on that. Would also be on the same block of SAS cables to the adapter

I started this in the ALL GONE thread but since mine aren't all gone.. I figured I'd move it I've had a bit a nightmare over the last couple days... I started replacing some old (very old) drives some have 80K hours and are 11 years old.. So during the copy suddenly I got drives not available and parity failed... my USB key was hot... I mean like 75 C hot... I let it cool and was able to config off of it.. I replaced the key and got booted again.. I had noticed when I was setting stuff up that some of my shares were missing.. They are not in the GUI... I can't find them in NFS (yes they are NFS Shares) They exist on disk and they exist on boot/config/shares My GUI.. But just the ones that would normally be on the cache drive.. (appdata, isos, domains and a few others) my cache drive was throwing errors so I had moved the files off... Then my USB failed... I copied it and am good now... I just rebooted and they are still gone in the gui .. not sure what to do.. they exist in the config file on the key.. there is data on disk The following shares are missing.. I recreated gcadd5.. (it says it's empty...) So I found this.. OK we are running again I think... I built a new key and got it to boot... License key has been installed and the parity it rebuilding... when it finishes.. I will continue with the drive swaps... and hey my new cache drives (Kingston A400 480Gb have arrived) so I can get them in too...

the MB only has USB3 ports... I can read the config off the old key.. tried a new key and it works (but I will need to get a registration key I got one 2 months ago) ... I will try and rebuild the old USB stick and see if I can get it to boot.. The BIOS was totally messed up.. The old USB key is totally messed up... when installed it gets right hot (in seconds) and the system locks up when trying to access it... So I'm going to guess it's done.. I will wait for support to get back to me about a new registration key

Latest update the key appears to be OK.. so I'm guessing it's something on the MB.. I will tear into in and it's config in a bit..

sorry I updated the notes.. (I had rebooted and it's sorta hosed) I will start troubleshooting the box

I installed a new 8TB drive... Parity rebuilt... I was looking at shares and their were a bunch missing... I was loading the drive (with unbalance) and get a warning that parity 1 is in error state, then parity 2 in in error state... then 3 of the 15 drives in the array are offline... then parity 1 and parity 2 return.. but the 3 drives don't... I cancel the unbalance.. I shut down the array and I reboot.... All sorts of issues with USB not responding.. and and ident cfg file it can't see... I will reboot and capture the screens... I have 28TB of data on the array... The drives were not showing any errors beforehand.. well nothing serious anyways a couple of old raw read errors (bad cables) and 1 drive had a UDMA error that was years old.. I suspect was a power fluctuation.. hopefully I'm not totally screwed.. rebooting now takes me to network boot.. so I think the USB.. I replaced it a about 2 months ago... so that is a problem I wonder the if MB is dying.. maybe it's time to pull the trigger on a new MB/CPU and memory... suggestions for a cheap combo.. (I'm in Canada so not everything is easy to get!)

Likely already know the answer.. but can I run multiple instances of unbalance.. I have just installed a couple 8TB drives... I'm going to retire a number of 2 and 3 TB drives... ( I think at coming up 8 years and 90K hours some of them have been spinning long enough)

So the power went out yesterday.. the UPS apparently was not big enough for the outage and the server crashed... When I tried to restart the server I got the ill fated kernel panic VFS sync issue... I tried editing the syslinux. cfg and now I get no boot drive.. I will look at it ensure windows didn't destroy the file (with bad line terminations.. So how do I create a new boot USB and copy over my config.. becuase I have 13 drives in the array...

So I'm ready to pull the trigger and spend the money. I want to change out the USB Key as I do this... What is the step by step process.. There are so many sets of instructions out there but most are on replacing the key.. not doing it going from a trial Thanks...

Thanks for the response.. What about using an "unassigned device"? or am I ever really gonna need that much cache.. (that's another need thing to get a better understanding of)

So here is my story of the last 20 days.. Admittedly I haven't been working on this solidly but I've seen rather steady progress. first things first.. Very cool app.. I am just about finishing the build on my array... unBalance, will be a godsend in moving things around.. I had 2 Synology NAS's and an Ubuntu Server running plex and a Virtual BOX VM that had all me Media apps (Radarr, Lidarr Sonarr, NZBget behind my VPN) The plan is to decommission them all.. The NAS's are old and nearly full and it is a pain having all those moving pieces to keep up with.. FreeNAS/Unraid??? Played with FREENAS and decided I work too hard on Computers at work.. Unraid is so much simpler.. I had a spare ASUS z-87 Pro with a 4770K and 32Gb of RAM doing very little and a collection of "retired" drives 2x3Tb, 2x2Tb and a 500Gb.. I built the array with No parity (for the moment) as well as 2 275 SSD's I wasn't really using.. I bought a cage to house 4 more drives.. I had a 4 port SATA 3 controller kicking around in the spare parts bin... the case is somewhat useless but I will make it work Machine should now support 12 drives now! Case may too... I will need to do some work with the fans to keep this thing cool My first week and a bit with the somewhat bare NAS was less then positive.. the machine would spontaneously reboot 3-6 hours in and I didn't now why.. finally put a monitor on it and saw it was a kernel panic... stripped the machine down a bit.. (there was an extra NIC and and additional 2 port controller I had forgotten to remove) No dice... still had a kernel panic... Re-flashed the bios.. (actually updated it) and it hasn't panicked again.. The existing NAS's are; a 413J which had 4X3Tb with about 7Tb of Data and a 415play with 2x4Tb and 2x8 Tb with 11Tb of Data (some of it redundant). I decided what was going where and created some shares.. I wrote a couple of scripts that use rsync to copy the data.. I tricked the NAS into giving me access to the share root so I didn't have to do a folder at a time if I didn't want to. ( I edited the exports & exports_syno ) and then reloaded sudo exportfs -va .. just don't change the shares in DSM! It copied the 413J over the network in under a day. I then backed up the NAS to a pair of 4TB passports just in case and shut down the NAS.. I pulled 2 of the 3TB drives out of it.. the ones without 62000 hours on them (yes I have a pair of 3Tb WD reds with 62K hours on them) added them to the array and started copying over the other NAS.. The copy is almost done.. maybe another hour... I am moving the data off of the 500GB so I can decom it and introduce drives from the other NAS.. (it would be waste to do dual parity with them wouldn't it!) I may introduce another 3Tb for parity beforehand since I have to reconfigure the drives in the case. I will update this post as I go.. I do have a few questions for people.. The VM I built is very slow.. Any way to speed it up???.. it runs reasonably quick on the old machine with Virtualbox smaller CPU and slower memory.. I was hoping to use a 4 port NIC (HP NC364T) I have.. Unraid loads the driver but lspci doesn't show the card I will try turning off the on-board controller as they may be conflicting.. Any other ideals? I've read a couple things on moving some of the appdata out of the array and a couple people saying it's a no-no.. Plex data can be recreated easily and doesn't need to be "protected" so rather then the massive IO why not move it outside? If my array is 2x8Tb, 2x4Tb and 4x3Tb.. iI think it's a waste using the 2 8Tb drives as dual parity? Is there a better way and have dual parity? As Dr. Frankenstein said "It's alive" .. I just have some tinkering to do!
