  1. i'm running my two unraid as VMs on top of ESXi for years. i'm using PlopKExec without problems.. https://download.plop.at/plopkexec/plopkexec.iso if you don't run any VMs, 4GB would be reasonable, but you can add more latter if you want. but according transcoding - you should just run some tests to see, how much it eats your CPUs, start with 4 vCPU. Free version of ESXi have a 8 vCPU limitation. i'm trying avoid any transcoding in my plex server. but you can go new unraid nvidia route and transcode with your GPU - check the plugin forum page. if you pass your IBM 1015 to unraid VM, then ESXi has nothing to do with it and drives connected to it - unraid manages spindowns of these drives. and according SSDs attached to host - i have two in my server and never noticed any problems with them.
  2. Yes, i think so. and attach your USB to unraid VM. But, esxi won't support boot from your unraid VM from USB directly. you need to download https://download.plop.at/plopkexec/plopkexec.iso, set it as first boot device, and when it boots, it selects next you unraid USB, and continue to boot from USB.
  3. no experience with Proxmox, but i'm running both my unraid's with success under VMWare Esxi. Keep in mind, this config is not supported..
  4. i have Norco 4224, and i'm using these for my both CPUs: https://noctua.at/en/nh-d9dx-i4-3u/specification i have no mind will it fit to your CPU, but you need something similar with 92mm fan, 120mm fan will be to too high.
  5. ok, just updated my unraid, now i'm on 6.6.6. installed a plugin, clicked on "Linux nvidia drivers" link, and it took me to this page: https://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-amd64-display-archive.html i selected a newest driver version, it list almost all available Nvidia cards. but still no info about particular card support for NVENC.. you should look rather in this? https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support-matrix for example, GT1030 wont support NVENC, but supports NVDEC. do we nee both?
  6. sorry, both my unraid's are below version 6.6.6, so can't install a plugin.. would you mind to share the link? i tried this already - there are bunch of threads on plex forums with very similar questions without no direct answers.. if you have particular link, feel free to share
  7. Yes, but if you have not Nvidia for now, and just thinking of buying some?
  8. i'm wondering what would be a sweet spot a Nvidia card to use only for this trancoding process. Nvidia Quadro P400 maybe?
  9. glad to see you sorted it out at least you know, your unraid disk is just fine
  10. you are only copying 1GB of data, it's too small amount. try again with bs=10G for example.. and "of" is not your disk share, it's on RAM now. try for exampel on disk1: of=/mnt/disk1/test1.img so the whole command on disk1 is as follows: dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/disk1/test1.img bs=10G count=1 oflag=dsync
  11. yes, but this plugin tests only read speeds..
  12. if you have no parity, then write to disk share.. i suggest you to do some write speed test on your unraid vm with dd command. see here for examples: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-linux-unix-test-disk-performance-with-dd-command/
  13. you should add PCI device and choose LSI2008.
  14. @syee please then post screenshot from ESXi pass-trough page..
  15. as i see on mobo pics, are there 3 SAS connectors? if so, then i think there are two controllers.. i did a little google on mobo specs, and did not found any information about.
  16. are you passed through the right controller? your syslog shows: Feb 4 18:48:07 STINKYNAS kernel: ioc0: LSISAS1068 B0: Capabilities={Initiator} Feb 4 18:48:07 STINKYNAS kernel: scsi host33: ioc0: LSISAS1068 B0, FwRev=01032920h, Ports=1, MaxQ=128, IRQ=18 and if you passtrough correct controller, then are your SAS 2008 controller flashed to IT mode?
  17. cos i'm not running unraid bare-metal, i can't suggest you a combo that will work with your video(?) card.. i'm running Supermirco X9 board with dual E5-2670 v1, 64GB ram - see my sig for more details. i have two unRaid VMs, some Windows VMs, some Linux VMs, all is running without a hitch.. i have a plex server on one of my unraid VMs, but i'm avoiding transcoding cos it will just hart my CPUs..
  18. you will run plex - do you need any transcoding? there are many topics about this problem on the forums..
  19. i can recommend this seller from ebay, bought some server stuff from him, all working without a problems.. and it's from Latvia, so no problems with long time shipping. https://www.ebay.ie/sch/marrtins/m.html?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEFSXS%3AMESOI&_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2654
  20. Do you mind used stuff or new only? and what VMs/other stuff are you planning?
  21. Yes, each unraid VM is responsible for their own disks with parity. and with that many disks, i would export user shares to main array. if you have say 24 drives, it's a big hassle to operate with them as 24 disk shares - just group your disks with user shares according on data usage - you can start with one/two disks for each user share and add more disks later if you need space for that share. according USB and licence - you need separate unraid licence for each VM + one for host. but see here for complete tutorial:
  22. no, you don't need two physical servers. look at my example - i have one physical 24 bay server with VMWare ESXi as host OS. then i have two unraid server VMs in it. both are running just fine - i simple pass-through one HBA controller to each VM. and then i can organize all access to data through one VM, if i want. you can run similar setup with unraid as host OS, and then add more unraid VMs as needed. your idea with second case and power board in it works very well, @johnnie.black have very similar setup. in this case you probably have more than one HBA in your setup and with proper pass-through you can organize your all server resources to run two or more unraids. But again, i agree, it will require some manual steps to be performed
