  1. That's how I understood it. chown nobody:users (directory or files) should have fixed the ownership issue. I did a ls -l to verify and indeed nobody is the owner and users the group. See the attachment above, I need permission from NOBODY to Write to the file. So I did a chmod og=rw that should have given permission to RW to others and users. But it did not fix it. I also ran the permission script with same results, i.e. Need permission from nobody.
  2. LOL!!! I have no problem when files are moved via Windows Explorer. When I use Midnight commander then all kind of weird things happened. No Write permission from NOBODY? What the hell? So chown and chmod og=rw did not do anything for me. So I just use MC to edit the files.
  3. One would need at the very least 2 of these to take advantage of the capacity!!! With the price of HDs at the moment it's rich!!!
  4. I also MC to transfer some files. No W in Windows. So I tired manually chown nobody:users and chmod og=rw and nothing still cannot delete or change files in Win7. ls -l clearly showed nobody:users. There is something in 5B14 which messed permissions. I guess the answer is not to use MC for me. According to Joe L. the files transferred by MC were owned by root so if you use chown nobody:users directory or files then the files would be owned by nobody:users and permissions for RW will be granted when using Windows. I tried that and have reported that it did not work for me for some reason. Really annoying.
  5. @settings, I think you are absolutely right. When I upgraded from 4.7 to 5B14 I noticed that file permission changed when using Unraid in a certain way. My problem only happened when I use MC to transfer files from a USB drive to the Unraid. I can no longer W (write and delete) those files. I used CHOWN and CHMOD to change file permission to no avail. ls -l clearly showed that each file has RW for everyone, and the owner and group are nobody:users.
  6. I really hate to ask for help for such a trivial problem but I am having a real hard time to fix this annoying problem. I used Midnight Commander to transfer some files from a USB drive to the Unraid server running 4.7. No problem. But when I upgrade to the Unraid 5B14 I suddenly found the I can no longer delete, change my files. Instead I was greeted with a popup window saying " You need permission from TOWER\Nobody to make change to this file." Now Joe L, the Unraid Guru posted that the solution is to run "chown nobody:users THE_ENTIRE_DIRECTORY_HERE" and that would solve my specific problem. Well I did that and also ran the Permission Utility and nothing. Same Popup. So I just let it go since I can use MC to remove the files. CHOWN changes the onwership of the file to nobody. But I need permission from nobody to change file. So Windows is not allowed to change file because it's not Tower/nobody. How do I get permission from tower/nobody. But being a persistent kind of a person, now a few months later I tried again with different files and wasted a tremendous amount of time doing it and again, nothing happened. Joe L is very knowledgeable. But I cannot figure out for the life of me what did I do wrong?
  7. Thanks. I looked at the MB and did not find it. Found it under the UPC code on the box.
  8. I also bought this board. Thanks for the heads up. The reported problems are new to me as I have not had this boot problem with any of my other boards, i.e Asus, MSI, Epox etc... Did you guys have the latest bios? Update: My board came in. Installed it and it boots OK. The bios on the board is the newest one. My problem, albeit a minor one is I have trouble to find the serial number on the board for the rebate. Looking with a flashlight and do not find anything with a SN number.
  9. I understand that when I use MC and telnet the owner and group are root:root. When I use the web GUI the owner is NOBODY. The ROOT users can access and edit files in the ROOT group, i.e MC and telnet. The WebGUI on the other hand cannot edit the ROOT files. All that is very informative. How do I fix it permanently to correct this problem. If I type in telnet chmod 666 myfile or mydir that would that solve this file and this directory problem. Instead should I use "chown users THE_ENTIRE_DIRECTORY_HERE" . THE_ENTIRE_DIRECTORY_HERE being my USB directory that I want to copy to the disk1. Not sure what running "newperms /mnt/disk1" will do for me since I already ran the new Permissions applets when upgraded to 5B14. Or will it fixed all my permission problems by changing all ROOT to NOBODY. But my disk1 is already owned by NOBODY. My problem is I assume that I am NOBODY when I used Windows to manage my files as opposed to ROOT when I used MC. How do I make NOBODY to grant me permission to edit my files. Not really sure creating ADMIN user will do for me since it does not seem to have any permission assigned to it. Do I need to stop the array to do that? Sorry about all this I have read this permission subject for the couple hours.
  10. Thank you for your help. I must be really dumb and unlucky because I did search the forum and did not find this problem being discussed. Please link me or tell me how to correct my file permissions. If I create an "admin" user through unRaid, do I need to have a PW or leave it blank and still have access to editing files? I was real happy before all these improvements. If I downgrade back to 4.7 will I still have the problem with MC file transfer.
  11. Just just upgraded from the trusty 4.7 to B14. I followed all the instructions to a T and ran the New Permissions. I had no users , no security setup in 4.7. But now I cannot edit some files in my Media shares. Specifically files I uploaded via USB disk with Midnight Commander. I ca still edit files uploaded though the network. I am desperate as I have been on this since yesterday and cannot see any obvious settings to change or add to allow me to delete or change name of files. The error message is "You need permission from TOWER\NOBODY to make that change" I am working on a Win7 desktop and I added the name of the computer to USERS with no effect. Please help me.
  12. I have no problem accessing the files, just edit/change/delete them.
  13. Same problem but with Win7. I cannot make any change or even delete the files?
  14. After running New Permissions utility, in 5BETA I just found out that I need NOBODY permission from TOWER to make any change to files uploaded though a USN disk with Midnight commader. How can I fix this? I really need to delete, edit and add a few files. I am doing my work from Win7. I did add user NOBODY in users settings with no PW. It did not work. Files uploaded with network seems to be OK so far. 15. Thanks, Peter. I do not want to break my array.
  16. I noticed that when changing flash drive, Unraid automatically started a parity check. Although my server had a complete parity check 5 days ago with no errors. So OK parity check is good and we are better safe than sorry. But then, I tried to upgrade to a 5Beta Unraid, here we go again, after checking the MBR and valid config and everything, I click start to bring the array on line. You probably all know already, Parity check started up again. This happened now 5 times in the last 6 days I have been trying to backup my flash with a card reader. So my question is " Is there a file that can edit or a script I can run so I can stop the AUTOMATIC parity check when trouble shooting or installing new flash drives or new Unraid releases?".
  17. Best price so far since the flood. But I can't go to 3 TB until they hit about $100 each. Seagate is going 7200 for all their drives and the platter density will increase so unless you must have them now, I would wait.
  18. I think that Prostuff1 is right. By copying the contents of the flash drive over the card reader I might have inadvertently overwriten some hidden files. The card reader did boot to Unraid OS but locked ( crashed) somehow. The card reader did boot into Unraid but crashed subsequently. I bought 3 card readers because I understand that the unraid license is tied to the card and not the memory which will fail. Frankly, there is something I do not understand here. It's such a trivial job!! But not for me!!! I have gone back to the original flash drive so I will stop working on this for a while. Thanks you all,
  19. I have put back the original flash drive and everything is working as it should. The card reader and original flash drive have exactly the same files. I did prepare the card reader with format, named it UNRAID and run make_ bootable.bat as administrator with Win7. Copied all contents from original flash. Counted the file and folder sizes. They are the same. My network problem is with both wired and wireless but only with the card reader. May be the card reader is defective or the SDHC class4 is bad. Although I doubt it. I am kind of afraid of messing things up if I put the card reader back on and run your command.
  20. I have been working on this for a couple days. I bought the Kingston Card reader with 8 GB to replace my USB Kingston Data Traveler. So I prepared the Card Reader-8GB for Unraid and copied the contents of my Kingston Traveler flash drive to it. That was my goal. But I ran into a problem with my network. With the original Traveler, I had no problem. But with the new Kingston Card reader with 8 GB no IP was detected. The contents of the 2 drives are identical. I must have done this about 10 times or more. With the card reader I cannot even used the command shutdown -h now . Instead I had to pull the plug. My array and network work fine with the original flash drive. Here is my syslog for the problem: Feb 8 23:12:02 Tower ifplugd(eth0)[1284]: Executing '/etc/ifplugd/ifplugd.action eth0 up'. 21. Hi Raj, You might like to know that both ECS and MSI boards you are testing are deactivated at newegg. They might not even restock them according to their info. Just wonder if you knew.
  22. Read the announcements thread about beta releases and various feedback on each one of them. If you need 3TB support then 4.7 won't do. There is also a thread on 5b6 stable release. I am torn myself but I rarely want to update my server with beta release, just have to much data on it and copying takes like forever.
  23. Same here. I just had too much invested in my server to mess with betas. That said, we are up to 5b14 and it's been a long time since 4.7.
