  1. Power supplies are expensive, and a PITA to swap out... ! Ghost in the machine ! I don't have a clue how its possible, but I've had my BIOS change its settings without my help. Can you get to your BIOS by removing the UNRAID flash drive? The official site: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A78E/#support wasn't much help...
  2. You mention issues with your fan...it made me think of this: My motherboard (not the same maker as yours, but still...) is designed so that upon power up, it will IMMEDIATELY power down if there is not a FAN connected to the SYS_FAN. You might swap in a cheap replacement system fan and see if that solves the problem.
  3. 1. What Mac OS version? 2. Are you trying to use your unRAID server for TimeMAchine? (If you are not using UNRAID for TimeMachine, try turning OFF the AFP for all shares...(sort of depends on your OS X version, but SMB will likely work fine without AFP) (and if you ARE running TimeMachine to the UNRAID server, there's an existing thread with tips))
  4. In Media Browser Theater... Look in Tools... on the Dashboard... in the section called, 'server information'. are the default ports 8099 and 8945? This site has more details: http://community.mediabrowser.tv/permalinks/13725/setup-and-configure-mb3-server-part-1---tools
  5. Not really, no, can't be turned off. Perhaps in whatever comes after 'Mavericks'. Meantime, AFP has to continue to run for those who use TimeMachine.
  6. Mac's use an open sourced signaling mechanism to find devices on your network. SMB is slightly different. both can run at the same time....no harm done. if you setup a share with AFP, but NOT SMB, you'll see the share in the TOWER list in Finder, but not in the TOWER-SMB list. (for example, I have my TIMEMACHINE share available ONLY with AFP...there's nothing I can do with in via samba anyway.) A Longer discussion is here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=29959.0
  7. Yes. I also thought that when the cache drive filled, future writes would go straight to the array. (I was certain I'd read that somewhere.) Sorry that didn't help.
  8. Something similar happened to me. (Not sure any of this helps you, but I've been following your saga for clues to the problem I encountered.) I was cleaning up a lot of old files... I had two large file copies simultaneously in operation from my Mac to unRAID. I had lots of empty space on unRAID, and I use a cache drive. Either copy operation would fit nicely on unRAID, and both together on unRAID would still have left 30% empty space. What I forgot about, was the cache drive's size. Turns out that while either copy would work, the two together wouldn't fit on the smaller cache drive. Obviously, the Mac looked ahead and saw that each copy would have plenty of space. The Mac copy operations appears to first create a '.dot' filename for each file that is to be copied. So to copy 'FOO.BAR', and 'TWO.BAR', , the Mac first creates all the 'dot' files '.FOO.BAR', '.TWO.BAR', etc. on the destination. Once all the .dot files and folders are setup, Then the actual files and folders begin to copy. As each actual file completes, its 'dot' file is deleted. When the two file copies (running simultaneously) filled the cache drive, both COPY commands stopped with 'Disk Full'. This left behind many many invisible dot files on the cache drive, and some of them were very large, and many were undeletable from the finder. In the end, I had to use Midnight Commander (the builtin MC command from the console) to find and delete all the invisible file trash...I don't understand 'why' but some of the trash files were pretty huge. There was also something about the way the Permissions were set, that required that the directory of .dot files be traversed by hand...deleting files, then the folder that held the files, etc. Took a long time.
  9. Hi Cstolworthy, I've only been using unRAID for a few months. During that time, unRAID has published a new final release version, '5.0'. One thing that is not yet updated is the documentation for the new release. Unfortunately, the Forums, Wiki, etc., still have a lot of information about earlier versions. Simple Features is no longer up to date. There are some community attempts to move some of the capabilities from Simple Features into new 'plug-ins' frameworks. One thing that appears to no longer work is email notifications. With the release of 5.0 final, the web interface dramatically changed. If you are running final 5.0, then: if you are also running the new 'WebGUI', then SimpleFeatures does not work properly. You should uninstall it. (this is an easy mistake to make. It took me hours of reading the forums to figure this out.) Try this thread, http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=28927.msg258106#msg258106 If you are running final 5.0, then: if you have *not* installed the new 'WebGUI', then there is some evidence that some SimpleFeatures features will continue to work. If you're interested, search the forums for the thread. There's a long thread of 'How' to do the install with v.5, and 'Which' features will then work. (IMHO, there are not enough features to make it worthwhile. While some work, there are other SF screens which are just wrong. In the end, I found it more dangerous to have screens around that gave bad info, so I just run the Advance WebGUI...other than the email notifications, it meets all my needs. YMMV.) If you are running final 5.0, then: if you are *not* running the new 'WebGUI', but would like to have it, then A new webGUI is at http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=28839.0 If you are not running final 5.0, then I can't really help...maybe some one else can chime in.
  10. My understanding is that avahi is just a signalling system...a way for devices to find each other. The devices broadcast a packet to the local network which indicates they are online and available...that's all. I've never heard of a 'conflict' with SMB. avahi is builtin to Mac OS X, and is necessary for Timemachine to find its storage on unRAID. Seeing it in the finder can be annoying, but avahi is (IMHO) harmless, takes miniscule bandwidth and almost no processor cycles. If you're worried about the 'cosmetics' of having two entries in the Finder Sidebar, look in 'Finder Preferences' and untic the box for Shared 'Bonjour computers'.
  11. (I've not had a problem downloading unRAID. ) I have download manager software for use with other problematic sites. Lately, I've found that the builtin CHROME download manager is adequate. On many sites, it seems to allow 'restart a download from where it was stopped' even from the browser. (for the stalled downloads, look in the Chrome Download window.) YMMV
  12. Excellent! Thank you so much, Influencer. It installed like a charm. I can't wait to start deleting stuff!
  13. avahi is way for devices on a local network to find each other... I think of it as the Open Standard version of Bonjour. {Are you a Mac user? Its built-in to the Mac OS, and is the reason that an unRAID server shows up twice in Finder windows. 'Twice' because its there once as a SAMBA server, and once as a 'device' that's been connected. If you look really closely, you'll see that they are subtly different..in particular, what I notice are that the 'labels' work in one, and not the other. To my knowledge there's no way to remove the duplicate in the finder list of Shared Devices.} If you're worried about the 'cosmetics' of having two entries in the Finder Sidebar, look in 'Finder Preferences' and untic the box for Shared 'Bonjour computers'. (this is true for Maverick...I can't recall if it was present on earlier versions)
  14. Probably not going to work. Mavericks is still too new Mountain Lion or Lion 'without tags' is difficult. (see http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?p=313424 for why...)
  15. In my case, the munged names show up in MC on the unRAID server running in console mode. I used MC to fix the names.
  16. I've just had the same problem with folder names, twice! The first time, I blamed something else. At first I thought it was because I had a '#' in some of the folder names. I fixed the names, without special characters, but the problem has returned. I fixed all the directory names by hand, but they recently changed back to gibberish. My current suspect is my Android tablet..the file browser on my tablet has a SMB capability. I browse the unRAID array from the tablet rarely, but it seems to be coincident with the folder names getting munged. My next step is to test that theory..
  17. Thanks for the concern, Influencer. The short answer is 'Yes' but I don't think Recycle is the problem. It looks as if its the same problem just reported here, http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=29757.0
  18. A plug in would be Great! I tried the do-it-yourself script method, and ...{edited to clarify} had unrelated problems and backed out....too scary. ;( {end edit} A chron that deletes anything older than <some> period of time would be fine...and/or just a manual 'empty trash' button.
  19. I have LION and use UNRAID for Timemachine...and I, too, was uncertain that TM would be stable. I carefully read all forum threads on TM, and I set my UnRAID server up like this: ---I use UnRAID 5.0rc16c. ---I restrict TimeMachine Share to one physical disk. ---And I have the TimeMachine Share set up so that it does *NOT* use the cache drive. I've never had a problem. I agree that a one hour backup is a bit extreme. I use a 12 hour schedule
