Warning purchasing USB hard drives
size = 4,883,770,552 Pre-Read. 48% @ 175 MB/s (3:51:07) I don't see anything mentioning HPA. Where would that be located?

tried it just now Pre-Read. 27% @ 181 MB/s (2:04:02) I use a KVM with a 21" monitor for the two servers so I have it up on the screen now too.

Warning purchasing USB hard drives
5TB arrived a day early. Removing the case is definably a one-way proposition (no screws, uses locking tabs). Not going to be able to send it back now. I believe these are re-branded Hitachi drives. model: MD04ACA500, Mfg data 2/27/14, firmware A0. Preclear on a 2TB takes about 22 hrs so this one will be couple days PS. instructions on ruining the case http://goughlui.com/?p=4688 PSS. No hidden partitions (at least Windows 7 can't see any). Just warranty PDF and autorun to install backup software.

Both boxes have a single AOC-SASLP-MV8 in them. I see some threads here that they appear to work with 3 & 4 TB.

I presume you've already upgraded to v5 (or 6) ... but a more compelling question (given that you've currently got all 2TB drives) is whether or not you've confirmed that the system supports > 2TB drives ... Both boxes are running v5.x. I can't find a definitive yes (or no) on either motherboard as to any limits on HDD size. Asus M4a785-M (older tower) Biostar A880GZ (new box)

Maybe. But you will be the first person using a 5T drive. Depending on the size it may need a myMain config change even if the is no HPA. Let me know when you get it and I can direct you. It will be placed as parity drive on a full 26 TB server (all 2 TB drives). Then I can start replacing those drives with larger and adding the 2 TBs to Tower2

The 5X3 Cage review - Norco, SuperMicro, iStarUSA and Icy Dock
Replaced (3x) COOLER MASTER STB-3T4-E3-GP 4-in-3 with (3x) these new iStarUSA BPU-350SATA-RED 5-in-3 cages. Added two more 2TB drives for a total of 12. The remaining 3 slots are empty but connected to SAS card; just add drives! Almost all positive feedback for these except for now my cabling is all a mess (lol). Glad I procrastinated long enough for these to come to market

Thanks for the compliments. You are one of the giants on whose shoulders I stand.

Pimp Your Rig
It connects to any USB 2.0 header on the motherboard. Just converts it to 2 USB inputs same as if you used wires to an external bracket. Should work with any motherboard. Just make sure you have clearance for the USB key once it's installed.

"We stand on the shoulders of giants." US Budget build using Asus M4A785-M. USB header adapter is the Koutech USB 2.0 Header-Pin to Dual Type-A adapter Model IO-UU220. I blocked the side air vents with a standard manila envelope containing a printout of the drive serial numbers and port assignments. All jumpered EARS except 4 & 5 which are left over WD EADS 1TB from the Hammer NAS this replaces. Next door is my Dell T105 running W2K8 (office file server). Direct access to either via KVM.
