  1. Yes I had a few full height "machine guns" too. No silent drives those ones. (Wistfully remembering the 60 megabyte Tommy gun) Sent from my mobile
  2. Let's hope they work seamlessly. Sent from my mobile
  3. There is good info on av-forums about modding both kinds of Tams servers. I prefer the easy route, just unplug fans until you can stand the noise and then monitor the temps. If they are acceptable, you're done. These things have way more fans than we need unless you are running old hot drives in a permanent parity sync Sent from my mobile
  4. You didn't have it easy though. We aren't all ready for the experience you had. I don't mind replacing the guts if we have to, but would love a solution that can work with what we all have. I have three Aic Xeon 5120 systems and 2 Supermicro Amd systems. Sent from my mobile
  5. Getting down to the Black Friday pricing. I'm thinking 4tb should be at this price before year end. Sent from my mobile
  6. As far as I know, nobody has got ESXi running on the Tams AIC Xeon systems. I've got 3 and would love a VM solution that can use most of the hardware. VL1969 has got the Amd version running Xen with a lot of hair pulling. I hope you can get something working. I'm happy with mine as they are only used for backup. The IPMI cards don't do full KVM but work fine for remote start up and shut down. Mine get woke up at 1am via IPMI and run 2 hours doing a backup then shut down via IPMI Sent from my mobile
  7. Most of our total cost of ownership involves time spent, not hardware and software. Now unRaid is final let's hope it just disappears from our to-do list. For a 12 drive array the other costs are very similar Another cost is complexity. I'd say unRaid gets that close to right. It just works but there is headroom to add features, and they are getting easier to add. Noobs with some technical skill do fine. Noobs without any technical skills should keep their drobos for now. 8. :'( Ouch... Thanks ... The one you listed is out of stock at newegg.ca but they have the following: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239135 Reviewers state it works with the X9SCM boards.... Should we trust them??
  9. Server just beeps the memory error code (5short 1 long) with this 2x8gb memory kit installed. Currently the 2x2gb kit is working well in this Motherboard. Do I blame Newegg's memory or is there something I need to do to make it work with this MB? MB reviews specifically mentioned this RAM as working... I just installed 2 new 8gb sims Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered w/ Parity DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model KVR1333D3Q8R9S/8G http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139280 Newegg shipped 2 simms that looked different, even though they both show the same KVR# Motherboard is an older one with 1.0c bios and a Sandy Bridge Xeon E31220 installed.
  10. Don't let your insurance off easy. If you are building the new one charge them $250/hr for lots of hours. More than a new car!! Sent from my mobile
  11. Looks interesting. I am looking for a cacheing file system. I want a local SSD on a Windows workstation to behave as a cache to unRaid. The Windows workstation will have a mid sized SSD for speed, that replicates to unRaid for capacity and backup. I really want the SSD to behave like a cache to the unRaid box. Have the entire unRaid appear virtually on the SSD, and be copied back and forth as necessary to optimize the workstation speed. Only current working files need to physically be on the SSD. The target application would be photo RAW image files that take gobs of space. We have millions on unRaid, but only need the current working files on the workstation. Doing everything on unRaid is much too slow. Doing everything locally on SSD is fine, for speed, but with limited space you need to manage the files that exist locally. We do this manually now with a 2tb Raid 0 (2 - 1tb spinners) array on the workstation. This is a bit faster, but SSD would be better yet, but the size limitations of SSD don't make this practical. We need a cacheing file system.
  12. To show how forgiving v5 & esxi is, my v5 final server has only 4gb RAM, but otherwise ready for esxi with X9SCM Xeon and 1015 cards and once esxi was running I just plugged in the unmodified unRaid boot USB and it started and has been running flawlessly for 3 days. I was expecting failure. With only 4gb ram total, esxi grabbed 2.2 leaving unRaid only 1.8gb. This wasn't quite enough for crashplan which got clobbered, but everything else just hummed along. Including all the other junk that loads on startup. More memory ordered but it runs. Sent from my mobile
  13. I was expecting much better deals on 4tb drives for Black Fri. I got one already at $150 in May so was expecting closer to $120 for BF. ( int or ext ) Given we are getting closer to Thanksgiving, and prices seem sticky at high levels, I may be disappointed in the Black Friday pricing on 4tb drives. Canada pricing usually follows the US closely.
  14. Is this being used by anyone yet for unRaid? Only place I see it is eBay @ $549.
  15. We just use "hidden in plain site" security here. The servers offsite are without USB boot keys and are grunged up with some duct tape to look like junk. Nobody would give them a second look. Onsite we have things bolted a we bit tighter. We have a password on our WiFi. ;-) We don't want to lock ourselves out. If any hacker is able to profit from our images he is smarter than me because I can't. I'll hire him in a heartbeat. Sent from my mobile
  16. Yes, perhaps I wasn't understanding the post correctly... Another typo. Meant G2120 not 1220. Sorry...
  17. Someone suggested that the G2120 would have a lower base idle power use on a X9SCM than an X7SPA would. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5133.msg245475#msg245475 Since the X7SCA of GaryCase is able to hit 20W with all drives spun down, this sounds very ambitious. Has anyone tried this yet?
  18. So you have a full backup in the cloud via Crashplan -- right? No, the internet is not big enough. The upload pipe I have limits out at 30GB per day, and I have a 400GB per month transfer limit.. We create 100GB per day sometimes. Maybe someday.... Crashplan only backs up critical files. This is less than 10% of the total. This is an issue whether you are going with Crashplan Central or another unRaid box running Crashplan and backing up to it. I just use Crashplan Central for the $4 per month. I don't have to worry about the 2nd box offsite.
  19. I had the 4 boxes, and it was easy to set up. This was before I had the backup to cloud working seamlessly. For me, I will evaluate whether I still need this many. Only you can evaluate the importance of your images. Having a second type of system (crashplan in the cloud) is good for user errors / hackers. User errors / hackers may replicate across similar systems. Both unRaid boxes could be compromised. For simplicity sake I would like to get rid of the rotating offsite backup. It involves picking up a server by its suitcase handle and taking it across town. Its a job that must be done weekly, and I hate those type of tasks. All other backups are automated. Backup server is started via IPMI, @ 1am, backup is done, backup server shuts itself off and I get an email that indicates they are done. This was created via bash scripts. (IPMI is only available on server class motherboards such as the popular Supermicro X9SCM, but well worth the extra $50)
  20. Agreed, but with one caveat. Sometimes it's possible to lose track of all those backups. I would like to have a catalog of all the backups that shows where files used to be, even if they aren't there now. This catalog should also have the MD5 signature so you can be sure it is the same file. Weebotech is proposing something here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=23152.msg242391#msg242391 and here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=28168.msg256925#msg256925 I like his ideas, as it would be solely inside unRaid with no Windows PC necessary, but want to try your idea too: http://corz.org/windows/software/checksum/
  21. Kenneth, in our photo studio I have already done what you are trying to do. My only comments are that 2 servers is not enough. We have 4 servers : Onsite main server Nightly mirror onsite 1. Weekly mirror offsite 2. Weekly mirror offsite Cloud based backup as well You have more than bit rot to worry about. The biggest issues are: 1. User error 2. Drive disconnection / failure 3. Then your other worries like fire/flood requiring offsite backups, then bit rot etc.... Our servers are 24 bay and 1/2 full and growing at 10tb per year. As we have used unRaid for 3 years we continue to add more functionality to the system and depend more and more on it each year. Good luck on this. We photographers are going a bit against the grain with all the movie storage types here, but unRaid just works....
  22. After you run it for a few months I'm sure you will have some 'I wish I'd done that differently' moments. I've done many diy projects and always have those moments. Pulling the drives drawers out will create cabling tension issues. Or is there a backplane? I'm amazed at how dense the industry has been able to pack drives into data centers. Keep us up to date on this....
  23. Back on topic updated to v5 on 4 servers successfully. Good work. Sent from my chisel, carved into Precambrian granite
  24. I have seen this numerous times. Plug the old supposedly failed drive back in and it will preclear without issue. I then preclear a few more times and then label it as a spare. Cable connections and backplanes are much more liable to cause a fail than a drive. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
