Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
That was my impression but in this case Unraid wouldn't shutdown at all until I physically took action and turned off the mounted hard drive. I will add a diagnostic log later. Thanks.

Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
Need some help finding out an issue I had with my Unraid server last night... I was using the user scripts plugin to backup my movies share to an external hard drive (mounted with UD). It was taking longer than I expected so I just wanted to shut the server down and pick up the rest of the back-up later in the week. However hitting shutdown from the Web UI or telnetting in and doing a 'shutdown now' failed to powerdown the server cleanly. In the end I had to hard shutoff the external drive, then the shutdown was performed. This leads me to thinking there was a problem with Unraid and unmounting the disk. How can I check this so that it won't happen next time? Thanks.

Additional Scripts For User.Scripts Plugin
Thanks for the advice. I ended up going down this route, and the parity rebuild took 10hours or so. Ok, the array is not parity protected, but the other (newer) method seemed like it would go on for at least a week... An easy decision to make IMO.

Additional Scripts For User.Scripts Plugin
Ok, so I can start a new config, keep the drive assignments that I want (make note of device ids), rebuild parity, let that finish, then I can remove the drive safely after a shutdown? Just want to be 100%, thanks.

Additional Scripts For User.Scripts Plugin
Thanks for the reply. Will the second option work even though unraid says the drive can't be mounted? So the steps would be: Stop array Set drive to unassigned Turn off Remove drive Start server Rebuild parity

Additional Scripts For User.Scripts Plugin
So the browser did hang in the end and I ended up killing the server (it took 2 goes) as I didn't like the idea of this process going on for a week anyway. Now I started the server I get an unmountable disk error. Not a problem, I just need the easiest and quickest way to remove this device from the array... and the clear drive process was certainly not the quickest.. Ideas guys?

Additional Scripts For User.Scripts Plugin
This clear array script... I started it running in the foreground in my browser and it seems it will take ages... So what happens when I close my browser or it hangs or something?!? ... and how long should this take as it seems to be going slooooooooooooooooowly... @ 2.8MB/sec for 750GB drive. Thanks.

Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
Is it possible that , since I had already mounted the original WD drives in their enclosures to do pre-clears, that this is somehow confusing UD as the ID is obviously that of the controller and not of the drive...

Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
Update. I've just replaced another array drive this morning. I took out a 750GB Samsung Spinpoint. I've just used the controller from another Elements enclosure (hey those 5TB Element drives were cheap!) to try and mount that, same problem: Sep 01 18:53:43 Disk with serial 'Elements_25A3_533133554A314B51343030303234' is not set to auto mount and will not be mounted... Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
No, I used to run this drive with a jumper, but when I upgraded to Unraid 6 and a new server a couple of years ago, I removed it and started from scratch. Trying this disk on a sata port is difficult as it is very difficult to remove the drive from the enclosure without risk of damage (to the enclosure) - which I'd rather avoid TBH. Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
I have a previous data disk from my Unraid array that I would like to mount with Unassigned Devices. At the moment the mounting process takes quite a few seconds before a red x pops up. Any ideas? edit - just noticed this in the log Aug 30 22:27:33 Mount drive command: /sbin/mount -t xfs -o rw,noatime, nodiratime '/dev/sdg1' '/mnt/disks/WD20EARS' Aug 30 22:27:33 Mount of '/dev/sdg1' failed. Error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdg1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error edit 2 this is a WD20EARS drive that has the jumper removed and has been placed in a USB3 enclosure @dlandon Any ideas? Thanks.

[Plugin] CA User Scripts
Ok, so I setup a simple script: #!/bin/bash powerdown Set-up the cron job to run the powerdown at 11am: 0 11 * * * And then hit apply. But nothing happened... anyway I can check the logs or something?! Cheers.

[Plugin] CA User Scripts
This is a great plugin. A question about scripts with cron jobs... so I setup a "powerdown" script this morning to simply turn run powerdown at 11am. What is the process for this running? I clicked apply and then left it... do I then need to run said script in the background? Also, deleting a script with a cron job, I presume the cron job will also be taken care of? Thanks.

Preclear plugin
Good explanation, thanks. So rebuild is plodding along at only ~30MB/s! Just read around and apparently the HP Gen. 8 that I have has a write cache disabled by default in the bios. Will fix that after everything is completed.
-
Preclear plugin
Got it. So the contents can be see but not necessarily read (e.g. music can't be played)?
-
Preclear plugin
So I guess the question is more, how can the drive contents be shown if the rebuild is no where near finished?
-
Preclear plugin
Thanks for the replies. The array upgrade process seems to be going (touch wood) smoothly after everything from the preclear went fine. One final question: during a rebuild of a data disk, it looks like the contents of the drive are already there, even though it's less than 10% through reconstructing from parity. Shouldn't Unraid deny access to any shares where the data is on a drive which is currently on-going a data rebuild? Thanks!
-
Preclear plugin
Ok thanks. I must have misunderstood as I thought that the preclear process also added some sort of "signature" to the drive, Unraid then recognises this... Parity drives don't have this signature I thought... Anyways, like I said I must have misunderstood the way Unraid works. Basically I just need to swap out the 750GB drive with the 3TB red and let Unraid do its thing.
-
Preclear plugin
When you say clear it using the GUI, you mean the standard Unraid process for a swapping out a data drive. So basically there are no short cuts I can take here. I simply upgrade the drive as one normally would and let Unraid rebuild from Parity? Thanks guys.

Preclear plugin
Question. I want to add my previous parity drive into the array as a data drive. Do I need to preclear it, and if so, is there a way to speed this up as I already know the drive is solid as it's worked flawlessly for 3 years. Also, is it possible to change multiple data drives at once and then do one re-build from parity, or can I only change 1 drive, re-build from parity, change another drive, re-build from parity...? Thanks.

Preclear plugin
Have been using this plugin the last few days and it's been working great for me. Everything seems to have "passed", but what do I need to look for specifically in the pre-clear results?

Unassigned Devices - Managing Disk Drives and Remote Shares Outside of The Unraid Array
I'm not 100% sure this is the right thread, but here goes... I have a couple of Western Digital 5TB Element drives arriving this week. I want to preclear them in their enclosures using UD, crack open the cases once completed and then add/update the Unraid array. I haven't precleared a drive for years and the last time was over the command line. Is there anything I need to be wary of with preclearing through UD? If I install the preclear plugin am I good to go or is there some "tuning" required? Many thanks guys.

All updated with no probs. Good reason to update: LMS web UI now works in Edge post Creators Update once again :-) Cheers.
