Seams everyone is ignoring the fact that your server will need to permanently phone home..

Totally optional, no need to enable this if you don't want the added functionality.

My server should be fully private....

It is if you want it to be. The core functions for sharing files have no reliance on an internet connection when using a paid license. It's only when you want to add third party applications that you need internet.

Respectfully, where are you getting this from? Everything I've read says you can continue to manually upgrade your Unraid with your existing key by extracting the files from the installation and overwriting the bz archives on the flash drive. No need to have internet access on your server or link it to your forum account.

In my mind Unraid shouldn't be doing anything with this drive until a file system is created

If it's a member of the parity protected array, every bit of it is used to calculate parity. File system or not, usable data or corrupt data, all bits of all drives in the main array are part of parity.

Formating and the resulting empty file system are all bits that must be emulated if the drive fails, so nothing is left out.

  4. Any disk with a top level folder for a share IS participating in that share, regardless of the settings configured for that share. How that top level folder is created doesn't matter, if it exists it will add to the share calculation.

Inclusion and exclusion, pool setting, etc only apply to new files written to the share.

The only exception is if the disk is globally excluded from user shares.

User shares are simply the combined view of root folders on all disks and pools.

If you have a free pcie 1x slot on your motherboard, that will do the trick. The other route would be a USB to rs232 adapter, but there are  many compatibility issues as most of these so-called FTDI adapters are Chinese cheap crap. So stick with the add-on card if you can.

That specific model has a very good reputation.

Do I just make a list of my plugins and install them one at a time until I find the one that causes the issue?

Or use the 50% method. Install half, see how it goes. Every time it crashes, you remove half of the possible culprits.
