  1. I got same behavior with 550ti in second slot. Had to reboot entire unraid box. Was able to obtain the rom for gpu (not via the dump method, but from techpowerup) and used it in the xml. Then it worked but some limitations still exist (e.g. no text output visible, till grafic mode initialized) For example, currently i need to install certain os' with newer gpu, install the drivers, then switch back to 550ti. -d
  2. hi guys, I need some help/advice on what's best to do here is my situation: windows 10 pro installed on physical, digitally licensed after taking advantage of the free upgrade offer on top of a win 7 ultimate, retail. I want to move my win 10 license to a vm in unraid. What should i do in order to keep my license/entitlement valid after converting the installation to VM in unraid (or fresh installing it, does not matter). Is there any proven trick? If only option is to use the MS account trick available in latest windows build, did somebody managed to activate the license in VM via MS account, but later on removed the MS Account link and still keep it activated? i know that this one is more windows related than unraid, but i assume many faced this issue already... I don't want to end up with MS Account linked to my win 10 installation... would prefer to not convert, or buy new license. I went through the older discussions, i understand the trick to keep the uuid safe after activation, so that it can be reused but... i don't have an uuid associated with a valid license - this is what i intend to gain thanks a ton -d
  3. search the forum for avast issue, it seems it's known issue: https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=52470.msg520481#msg520481
  4. hi, my experience so far: Zotac 1060 3gb mini Usage: high settings gaming, folding, and any general purpose. It's small length so usable in small cases (although it still uses 2 slots) Rating: Excellent Instructions: was able to properly get the rom following the video/written guides. tested perfectly in all slots (including slot 1). confirmed with seabios and ovmf. Note: did not test in Windows OS, but tried many linux OS's (fedora 25, ubuntu 16.04 - gnome, kubuntu, etc... mint) with great success. interested also for Motherboards? -d edit: Installed last night Win 10 pro with 1060 passthrough. Installed the nvidia latest drivers. All went smooth, no issues detected so far.
  5. just a clarification about my point 3 - changing hte slot - not sure what is the impact for doing so to the array - if drives in array will get messed up - so better to take more advice about proper way to do this.
  6. Joseph, if i may give my cents... 1) x8 vs x16 - the diff in performance is minimal - maybe it drops few frames... So i would not worry, even for a high end card. 2) i would avoid putting a non GPU in that shared slot (used for SLI). Only if it's the last option... i don't have a practical argument to demonstrate, other than theoretical: those slots are getting the pci lanes directly from CPU, whereas the rest are from the Z97 chipset, so i would say they are more suitable to host GPU's rather than regular PCIe cards. See also think link explaining what kind of lanes exist for your chipset - z97 used as comparisson with newer chipsets z170, x99 https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/462341-skylake-haswell-e-pcie-lane-misconception/ Z170 it's also sharing the 16 PCIe lanes from CPU to x8 + x8. it;s only that the lanes from chipset are newer and more (e.g. z170 has 20 lanes PCIe 3.0) also more info on the x97 pcie lanes: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Z170-vs-Z97-What-is-the-Difference-636/ 3) slot 7 x4 - based on the schematics from Darkun1 it;s indeed limited to x4 I could not find out if the SuperMicro AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 SATA Controller is pcie 3.0 or 2.0. But regardless, i would easily put it in the last slot 7, i don't think you'll get perf impact (the controller is x4 anyhow) 4) not sure if the el-cheapo will be suitable to passthrough properly. I struggeld with newer card, 55ti and i managed to get it passthrough.but limitations exists though, discovered recently...
  7. i just edited my post. jonathanm you refer to the flash drive? i assume windows will not touch the flash drive, but i might be wrong... but if you refer to the array disks - the unraid array/cache will not be visible from windows. windows will use a disk, outside unraid. unraid array will have separate disks. -d
  8. Hi, Is it possible to add to the unraid boot menu the windows 10 boot partition? I have a disk dedicated to windows 10, already installed, so not part of the unraid array/cache. I want to boot from the unraid flash, but then to select from the menu the option for windows 10 disk. Currently i have to use the F8 key (in case of Asus) to select the device to boot, and will chose to boot either the flash, or the win 10 disk. I already saw the instructions to use the cache drive to host multiple partitions (cache, windows partition) but is not for my scenario. -d Edit: after more reading, i understand it could be possible... by modifying the syslinux config to add extra menu for windows 10 partition. Is there any good guide, instructions already available? i could not find yet... thanks
  9. hi alturismo sorry for letdown, but i cannot confirm that, since i don't have intel hdmi. i know how frustrating is to have to work with many unknowns and not being able to have clear purchase decisions i guess that this audio output is coming from the integrated gpu in the processor? maybe you can find some relevant information by checking the thread of how to passthrough integrated gpu... this is the best i can suggest. and hope others can chip in and give some yay's/nay's for your problem... -d
  10. I have a couple 710 cards and a 730. I just feed them straight to OS X with no issues. I'll try to post rom's soon. Thanks 1812 - that would help i was about to mention this: "also, please provide the exact model and part number, so that i can order same " But, few restarts later, it seems i will stick with 550ti for now, because i have some great news I downloaded the rom for 550ti from techpowerup (~60kb). i just booted into the os, passing through the 550ti, writing now from that os Also did some tests for VM restart and power-off then power-on the VM - and it works great! the gpu does not hang after first boot! One thing to note, there are several part numbers for evga 550ti. some cards are 2 gbs, others are 1 gb. But i can confirm that the rom in techpowerup for my card with part number 01G-P3-1556-PK (so 1 gb ram) is working fine! The link for the rom: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/102599/EVGA.GTX550ti.1024.110225.rom cheers -d
  11. most probably you missed my post, which is last reply in the first page of this topic...
  12. at least this i can contribute regarding asus x99-m ws & chosing the primary GPU - no option like this in my bios. I have only the "privilege" to see the cards, in a very generic way (e.g. it shows "NVIDIA GPU" for both the cards, but no model). It also shows the speed for each card (e.g. x8, x16). i guess i'm out of options. probably newer card plays better? was considering a cheap 710 - anybody having success with it? e.g. dump rom while in second slot, then passthrough while in first slot... -d
  13. hi, i think instead of this: append intel_iommu=on vfio_iommu_type1.allow_unsafe_interrupts=1 pcie_acs_override=downstream initrd=/bzroot append initrd=/bzroot,/bzroot-gui you should put this: append intel_iommu=on vfio_iommu_type1.allow_unsafe_interrupts=1 pcie_acs_override=downstream initrd=/bzroot,/bzroot-gui -d
  14. hi, the available pcie lanes are coming from processor and chipset. To my understanding, the h170 platform can allocate 16 lanes from CPU (to GPU) and another 16 lanes from the chipset . But most probably this allocation from chipset is not for GPU, but to other devices, like storage, etc). In case of H170, apparently these 16 lanes are only 1x16, e.g. does not allow for example 2x8 - e.g. to be split... see this table: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Z170-H170-H110-B170-Q150-Q170---What-is-the-Difference-635/ my doubt is: most probably the slot 1 one GPU (closest to your CPU) will use the entire lanes from CPU. And the other GPU will not work properly with the lanes from the chipset. The platform does not support SLI (not that you're trying to do SLI) and this might have something to do with this limitation. Maybe others can step in with more clarifications, opinions, personal experience. I think if we get single confirmation that somebody successfully used an H170 chipset for 2 GPU passthrough, is good enough for you to keep trying What i would try next : 1) See if you can allocate to both your GPU's in Bios (if there is such option) the Gen2 setting instead of Gen3/Auto. Maybe this will allocate only 8 lanes per GPU... worth trying. 2) keep only one GPU, in second slot - does it work properly when passthrough? (in this was we eliminate the possibility that the slot 2 is faulty) 3) disable the onboard GPU, also make sure you do not boot into unraid GUI option; use a second PC to connect to the admin console, ssh, etc. - do you get different IOMMU groups? Also, maybe it's worth trying to use the rom dump method but not sure what are the steps in case you have integrated GPU (cannot try as i have x99). -d
  15. just to give same advice i got from gridrunner on different topic. if you have the option in bios, when you have the 2 GPU cards installed, make sure you are setting the primary GPU as per your needs. if you don't have this option (i personally don;t have it on my asus x99-m ws), then the primary will be the GPU in the first slot. -d
  16. To my understanding (i have not tried it myself yet), there is option to do entire USB controller passthrough to the VM. With this option, anything (e.g. mouse, keyboard, usb harddrive, joystick) plugged into the usb ports associated with that passed through controller get's available to the VM. Same for removal. This makes it seamless / transparent, so no need to restart the unraid box to do new passthrough, etc. Probably labeled usb hubs on your desk (that are always plugged to same usb ports on your motherboard) would make it easier to manage/access. -d
  17. hi, pls check this thread, on first look it seems similar... https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=36110.0
  18. give more details what you tried, which slots you put, logs... what the folks suggested here: 1) shut down your unraid box & put the temporary card into the slot 1 - the unraid output console should be displayed via this card (e.g. login prompt - it's my understanding it's good practice that your unraid should not boot into GUI by default, but should boot into the command line (e.g. the prompt) 2) put your 730 card into the slot 2. Start the unraid box 3) via different pc, login to admin console and create the vm to use your 730 for passthrough - when starting the VM, make sure your monitor is on and set to take that input from 730 (if multiple inputs), to see if there's something displayed If at any given point it starts but consequent restarts of the VM's are not working, restart the unraid box (i'm having this kind of issue with older GPU) I would suggest try first ovmf and if that does not work, try seabios. Also, give us the logs from the VM start (when you start the VM in the GUI, on the right hand side there is an icon for the logs) Also ssh to the machine and type 'dmesg' - see if something shows in the log relevant mentioning 730, GPU or rom. -d
  19. hi 1) arc and 5.1 - as i read, it depends on TV - https://www.cnet.com/news/what-is-audio-return-channel-arc/ 2) not sure what is the intel hdmi audio / intel sunrise - is not the onboard audio? but in my case, i was able to passthrough the onboard audio on my x99-m ws to the VM's - it shows in the list of available devices for the audio (along with the hdmi's from the gpu's) -d
  20. hi, i hope i'm not jumping into this without having much clue. but to my understanding, the GPU cards should be in separate iommu groups for passthrough. but is see the 950 is in group 7 along with different device. Not sure if that PCI device is normal to be in that group (e.g. bundled). Also, i see that the 1080 is also with another device (group 1). As i remember, on my asus x99-m ws matx motherboard, my 550ti and 1060 are in totally separate groups, without any other devices. -d
  21. gridrunner, my mobo is x99-m ws from asus. i could not find an option to change the primary GPU, altogh i searched for it during the last days. checking on internet, maybe asus did not put this option for x99, but only for the platforms with IGP will check again thou the 1060 zotac mini 3g rom file is located here: http://www.filedropper.com/zotac1060mini3g (please, it's my first time using this file upload service, not sure on reliability or if any issues)
  22. wow totally missed this one. i was using 2016.2, from the official site: https://www.kali.org/downloads/
  23. so i tried after fresh restart, with the VM up, without unbind. i still get the input/output error. i also tried creating a new VM, this time with seabios (previous attempts were with OVMF - so i believe seabios is recommended for the non uefi gpu's like 550ti). Restarted the box, then starting this VM, performing the isntalltion of the Ubuntu properly. Restarted once again the box, started the VM, then tried to dump the rom without unbinding, same issue - i/o error. Tried also to unbind, again cannot unbind while VM up. after start of VM and stopped, any attempts to start the VM fails and i get black screen output - in the VM log i see this: 2017-01-16T22:07:26.847146Z qemu-system-x86_64: vfio-pci: Cannot read device rom at 0000:02:00.0 Device option ROM contents are probably invalid (check dmesg). Skip option ROM probe with rombar=0, or load from file with romfile= in the dmesg, i see this: [ 159.336702] vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: Invalid ROM contents [ 176.687421] vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: Relaying device request to user (#0) [ 216.226455] vfio-pci 0000:02:00.0: Device is currently in use, task "bash" (13024) blocked until device is released the above i assume is during unbind. other messages in dmesg are like: [ 297.524992] pci 0000:02:00.0: Invalid ROM contents [ 337.653449] vgaarb: device changed decodes: PCI:0000:02:00.0,olddecodes=io+mem,decodes=io+mem:owns=io+mem which are probably my attempts to restart the VM (and failing, with black screen) will come back with details of the rom for Zotac 1060 mini 3gb...
  24. is it my [wrong?] understading that unassigned devices do not count against the license limit, since they are not part of the array... somebody can clarify please?
  25. junnu, in fact the rom i downloaded from techpowerup is around 58-60 KB for my 550ti My understanding is that it should be around 128KB? And usually the ones from techpowerup are around 256KB, which ppl are saying they are not good, because they are shadowed roms and will not work for passing through the gpu to vm... maybe the age of the card also matters... maybe older cards are smaller, newer are bigger... just my understanding, don't take it for granted. -d
