I was just going to take everything out of a case, literally drill some holes in the side of it that match the bolt pattern for holding 12 drives in the proper alignment, and stuffing everything in it. I don't 3D print.

while waiting for my NR12000 to ship, i'm snooping around on fleabay, at backplane boards, wondering if I can't franken-rig one of them some how. lots seem to have 3x mini-SAS ports on them for 12x drives, and standard D-style power connectors. half wondering if I can't gut one of these mid-tower cases down, trick the power supply into starting, drill some holes and mount the drives and the backplane in there, then run a cable out to my LSI 9200-8e card.

did anyone else have a problem recently with 1.1.6? While I was installing the other PoST coin apps, I had to stop chia, then when I restarted it, it refused to sync. A couple hours on, and I finally said **** it, and installed 1.1.7, in the hopes that it would fix... something. Apparently it did, as after a couple minutes it started to sync back up.

figured out my "mistake"... didn't import the mnemonic to the other chains, to allow them to farm them. figured that out when I looked at the log on one.

speaking of power, those 3 DL380's plus the farm computer and MD1000, are now running the UPS right on the ragged edge of overload. :eek:

Ok. I'll wait until flax and chain have synced up, then I'll restart everyone in a different order. also downloading spare.farm now.

and the dropping chia price is actually good in my book. $200 and i'm just flat out buying like 10 chia. you picked an exchange for buying/selling chia yet?

so I didn't need to do anything to the PLOT files for the other farmers? both flex and chain are saying they can't open all 402 plots I have right now. do they need to "touch" them in some way, that requires write access? of course they haven't synced yet so I dunno if maybe that's part of it?

heh... running all 3 blockchain on the same machine... might need to get another Z420 just to manage that. poor C2Q processor is getting CRUSHED, trying to sync up flax. waiting for my NR12000 to ship still. hopefully that'll do better as the farm.

how/where did you find out about those?

also picked up an HP Z420 Workstation 6-Core Xeon E5-1660 3.3Ghz/16GB/DVDRW/NO HD for an unRAID setup for mom and her SageTV PVR system; needed something large enough to hold a bunch of 3.5" disks (got 7 in it now, could have done 8), powerful enough to run unRAID, stuckless sagetv container, and possibly a few other bits. It has 10 sata ports on the mainboard and can support up to 256GB ram. With the 7 rusty boys spun down, a 500GB SSD, and the box doing pretty much nothing but waiting, it's idling at 73W. That's not bad considering it's got an AMD FirePro V4900 video card (WAY overkill for the needs, but that's what it came with, and I don't have anything to swap for it right now; no onboard video.) Cost of the machine was $202 shipped. 4-in-3 can be had for it looks like $40 (china), or $68 (US). taking the higher end that's $38.50/drive-connected. or if you want to just stuff the disks in the 5.25 bays and let 'em flop around that's $25.25/drive-connected.

been thinking about unraid and this chia thing. one if the nice things would be, if the disks could stay spun down. problem is, spin up time is too long for the timeouts in chia. so the question is: is anyone looking at actual spin up times for drives? some obviously spin up faster than others. would there be any financial (mostly, power) benefit to equipping a farm with fast start drives. this almost feels like a perfect task for a hybrid drive. problem is, how to make sure the needed data is in the SSD portion of said drive. if chia is intended to be "green" technology, then it needs to figure out how to allow for drives that are more near-line vs. on-line. Of course, the argument that was made by the developer of only using already available storage can still be made, but I think that ship sank the 2nd day after mainnet went live.

good thing the one harvester has almost 2TB of space to store plots, before they're moved to the farm machine. farm target drive filled up, and there's 6 plots waiting on the one to get moved, and 2 more on another.

plot map is getting nicely full with it finding a potential match every round.

my bad on that, if warranted. yea i'm hoping to see some stuff go back on fleabay, at reduced pricing. on some other news: my scripts continue to just plot along (pun intended.) just watched 'monitor' suspend robocopy because a TMP file started getting copied to the staging drive on the one plotter.

That $15/drive is just for the connectivity of it. I'm running on those ~$32/drive drives right now. so I guess you could say total costs per drive farming, is ~ $47/drive, or ~$11.75/TB active.

looking at some of the setups i've seen, I'm wondering what their $/connected-drive rate is. that chenbro unit, will be < $15/drive. that strikes me as pretty decent.

well that sucks then. I'd need to stop plotting k32 right now, and start plotting k33, just to get better utilization. although a better question is... what size temp disk space do I need to plot k33? am only using 300GB drives right now. if I change the script, do I need to re-work my entire plotting setup for disks?

how big is a k33 anyways?

well, I bought something... Chenbro NR12000 1U 1x 8m QUAD CORE E3-1220 3.1GHz 8GB RAM NO HDD $172.73 shipped. can take 1x 2.5" and 12x 3.5" HDDs internally. going to set it up as its own farm, with 12 of the disks I've already plotted. not going to go the farmer/harvester route though, as I'm thinking it's better to have each machine with disks separated, so if one poops itself it doesn't take out the others. if I like it, and the vendor has more in the future for the same price I might do another later on. we'll have to see.

since reddit sucks and I can't ask there, anyone know how to get the farmer to look in subdirectories? I'd like to not have have 15+ plot directories listed, and just park all the disks under subdirectories (as I do now.)

Nice. I've resigned myself to just letting what I've got do it's thing for now. I'm getting ~ 24 plots/day it looks like, which means a 4TB disk is filling up every 1.5 days, and I have only 4 more of those disks to fill at this point. I'll waste more plotting time trying to get marginally faster, than it'll take to finish these off, and right now the only thing i have to do is periodically change a share to point to the next disk. I do wish that K32 plots were *just* a bit smaller, as i'm leaving 80GB of space unused on each disk.
