Plus, the one I got from Newegg has 5 reallocated sectors and a bunch of unsafe power downs already.

I hate to be a newb, but what does that mean?  And when/how did you figure that out?

That info was reported by the SMART monitoring. I use HD Tune and Speedfan to monitor drives. I don't know what the unsafe shutdowns means, but a new drive shouldn't have any reallocated sectors. I have drives that are several months old with none or 2-3 reallocated sectors. But, I had a Newegg gift card, and return shipping will be a wash.

This is listed as "usually ships in 1-2 months". Was it like that when you ordered? I know I have ordered items from amazon before with that status and they shipped next day.

It didn't say that when I posted the deal. AZ is weird in that they say "ships in 1-2 months" when the item is on order, but I've never had to wait that long when it has said that. Usually, it's only been a week or two tops till it ships.

Darn.  It looks like Amazon itself is out of the drives.  No more Amazon Prime option for $69.99 with free shipping.

When I click on the link to order another one, I get $88.00 + $3.35 shipping from goHardDrive.

Well, at least I got an order for one earlier.   :(

Ship time says 1-2 months, but that's usually never the case. I've never had to wait more than 2 weeks till they ship. Click the following link, AZ is the top seller in the list.

FWIW, I just received my Hitachi 2TB drive I ordered from Amazon through the deal mentioned in this thread.

Interesting packaging:  all cardboard.

The old packaging, even for OEM, was to have the drive suspended in the box using plastic inserts that gripped the drive on two edges that fitted perfectly in the box to keep things from moving.  So shock absorption is through deforming the plastic.

The new packaging had the drive attached to a piece of cardboard using plastic wrap.  That piece of cardboard had folds on the outer edges to fit perfectly in the box.  In this case, shock absorption is through flexing the piece of cardboard that the drive is attached to.

In both cases, the drive was in an ESD bag as usual.

The box the drive was in was in a larger box stuffed with paper to keep the smaller box from moving around.

The drive did test OK and so I'll use it.  I guess the packaging is more eco-friendly, but, I'm not convinced it holds up as well as the older packaging in shipping.

I've actually ordered the Hitachi 2TB drive from both newegg and amazon recently. They were both OEM.

newegg had the plastic end caps to suspend the HD while amazon had the cardboard wrapped box. I don't know if it's necessarily much more eco-friendly... they are still using plastic to wrap the HD onto the cardboard slab.

I haven't had a chance to test either of the drives since my unRAID server doesn't even boot up but I hope to get that going soon.

Recent purchases from newegg for me have been wrapped in bubble wrap and stuffing on small white rectangular box. Rectangular boxes are packed in larger fox with brown paper. Overall B / B+. I do prefer the plastic end caps, but only got them once with an OEM drive.

I buy far fewer from Amazon, but usually they are retail. Retail packaging is excellent and you know the drives have always been protected - with OEM you have no idea what might have happened in the warehouse, even if they look well protected when they arrive.

After having a few RMAs recently, I am leaning towards retail if they are < $5 more.

Except that the HD from Amazon is not retail, either.

I've ordered from Fry's before and they use the foam sides with the drive suspended between the two foam pieces. Very nice.

Amazon's way of packing many items is to plastic wrap the item to a flat piece of cardboard. It saves them the cost of peanuts/air pillows, etc. Of course, I've had items where the cardboard piece comes detached and bounces around in the box.

Well, I didn't remember that Hitachi itself buyed the hard disk unit from IBM...

One contender less, it's getting lonely in the hard disk business... who is left? WD, Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba?

Hopefully the prices won't rise  :o

There's no such word as buyed. :) The past tense of the verb "buy" is "bought". http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/buy

While I agree with this, it is possible that English is not his primary language, in which case this just comes across as mean.  A quick check of his profile confirms this man is from Austria.  Maybe cut him a little slack.  :)
