November 3, 201114 yr Author Will upgrade to the new JRE in my next release, but I think I'll hold off on the ps3 media server beta. I know these are typically rock-solid, and in fact personally I like to run the new betas as soon as they come out, but I feel as though sticking with the stable-release is preferable for the plugin... That being said, I think I'll add a "use beta versions" flag to the user-settings. That way those who feel comfortable can do so...
November 4, 201114 yr will this plugin run on my hp microserver n36l along with sab, sick, beard? i mostly stream 720p, but sometimes also 1080p.
November 4, 201114 yr Author will this plugin run on my hp microserver n36l along with sab, sick, beard? i mostly stream 720p, but sometimes also 1080p. I don't have this server or a similar cpu setup, so I can't answer for sure. I can, however, respond with generalities. Assuming you have enough RAM and suitable network speeds, the short answer is it'll install & run. For non-HD content, it should have no problems. However, as with most lower power/performance cpu's, whether or not you'll experience stuttering, sync issues, etc. depends mainly on whether or not your video sources are already in ps3-compatible formats. If not, then the server needs to transcode them into something compatible before sending it to the ps3. This can be cpu-intensive. Par-ing & unrar-ing (decoding your usenet downloads) can also be cpu-intensive, so I'd be worried about watching a movie while sab is downloading & expanding in the background. Here's a basic rule, according to one of the developers of the software: if a simple video playback takes more than 50% cpu on your computer, don't expect to transcode it in real time (soure: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2936#p16314) If you're on the border-line for performance, you can always try it. If it doesn't work suitably for your needs, then you can delete the plugin & restart (this doesn't get rid of all your files, but it will prevent the server from getting installed).
November 5, 201114 yr will this plugin run on my hp microserver n36l along with sab, sick, beard? i mostly stream 720p, but sometimes also 1080p. i have this running on my n36L microserver. I had a quick play around a week ago and it seemed to run a few of the files which didnt have DTS audio. Any file i tried with dts simply wouldnt start and i got an error. Most of my media is stored either as BluRay ISO or MKV with dts so i need to find a way of getting it all to work nicely. OK, just seen there is an update, so went ahead and performed the u/g to V 1.3. I followed instrctions and removed the folder to ensure the package is downloaded again - this seemed to go fine. Anyway, i then ran the file to install it and all seemed fine, but i got a load of entries: tar: ./._mencoder-packages: Cannot change ownership to uid 501, gid 20: Operation not permitted tar: and started and when i fired up my PS3, it found the ps3ms on my unRAID box. Therefore im not sure what the impact of those above errors or warnings are, but it all seems to be working I set the video buffer to 1536mb and the transcode to 600mb. It is now playing dts MKV files woo hoooo! I tried about 5 or 6 so far, all 720p with dts audio and they work fine (all be it as LPCM and not dts, but im not really that concerned about that) - video and audio are working and no jerkyness or dropouts so far. CPU shows about 80% use (I have 4GB memory installed in my microserver) i tried a few 1080p MKV files (again with dts) and this upped CPU to 90% utilisation, but they stutter and jerk, with audio drop outs. I have a gigabit network and use another media streamer which works flawlessley (so network is not the bottleneck). Right now, im happy with what it is doing, top job mate

November 5, 201114 yr Author Yeah, whomever created the zip with all the files in it probably did it on a Mac. That's correct. I've done all of the research & compiling of libs on my main computer, which happens to be a mac pro... I guess now that I've got MPlayer working (see next post/original post), I can create an archive from my unraid box that should get rid of these errors for my next version, but as you probably realized, these errors are benign and do not affect the running of PS3 media server.

November 6, 201114 yr Author root@Tower:/boot/config/plugins/ps3mediaserver# ./PMS.sh Can you tell me what you defined for the "PS3 Media Server Installation Directory" on the settings page?
November 6, 201114 yr Author Well, where is it, i can't find it! On the unRAID web interface, in the settings tab, there should be a PS3 Media Server icon. Click that and you should get the settings page for the plugin. Please configure it to your liking. Hitting the apply button after setting "Yes" to the "Enable PS3 Media Server" question will start the software for you. There's no need to run any start commands from the command line.
November 8, 201114 yr Love this, works great. just copied my old pms.conf file over and started it up. My only comment is stopping PS3MS is pretty fast, kills the process and done. but when starting it, it seems to always want to go through reinstalling all the codec things etc. it doesn't seem to be very fast if you want to make a change to stop the process, make the change, start/apply then wait while it reinstalls. maybe just a button reload the config. That way you could make a settings change, hit reload. it'll kill the process, then just restart it loading the new saved config.
November 8, 201114 yr Hello, First I wanted to thank you for this better alternative to Mediatomb. It works much better with my WDTV Live streamer. Just a few questions: - apart from the parameters page accessible from the Unraid's settings page, is there a web gui for PS3 Media Server such as the Squeezebox server for example? - does this plugin allow for upgrades such as the Sabnzbd plugin? Thanks
November 8, 201114 yr I can confirm that TS_Video and DVD .iso files are now working in 1.5. Sadly, I had some pretty bad audio desyncing. Seems odd as it can transcode 720p .mp4 no problem, but struggles with 420p Mpeg-2.
November 9, 201114 yr Author My only comment is stopping PS3MS is pretty fast, kills the process and done. but when starting it, it seems to always want to go through reinstalling all the codec things etc. it doesn't seem to be very fast if you want to make a change to stop the process, make the change, start/apply then wait while it reinstalls. maybe just a button reload the config. That way you could make a settings change, hit reload. it'll kill the process, then just restart it loading the new saved config. You are absolutely right. I too don't like the fact that it's reinstalling everything. It was done this way primarily due to reasons that are no longer relevant, like the fact that the mencoder-package was constantly changing. Since the plugin's fairly stable, my next revision will concentrate more on user-experience (the GUI, this wait in between restarts, etc.). Unfortunately, in the mean time, I don't have a temporary workaround . If you make a change using the PS3 Media Server plugin's settings page, then you'll have to wait for it to reinstall. The only sort-of workaround that I can provide is that if you don't use the GUI, and instead make the changes to the PMS.conf file directly (e.g. using vi or other editor), you can then restart w/o having to reinstall via the following 2 commands: /etc/rc.d/rc.ps3mediaserver stop /etc/rc.d/rc.ps3mediaserver start (of course the above assumes that you've already installed the plugin and that you've setting the settings at least once via the web GUI.) thanks!
November 9, 201114 yr Author - apart from the parameters page accessible from the Unraid's settings page, is there a web gui for PS3 Media Server such as the Squeezebox server for example? There technically is a http interface, but honestly I think you'll be disappointed since you can't do much with it... http://{ip_address_or_hostname_of_your_unraid_server}:5001/console/home For example, if your unraid server's IP address is 192.168.1.1 then, the URL would be: http://192.168.1.1:5011/console/home - does this plugin allow for upgrades such as the Sabnzbd plugin? Not right now. I plan to release that type of functionality eventually, and even have a setting for using the latest beta version of PS3 Media Server (for the adventurous), but for now it needs more testing ... thanks!
November 9, 201114 yr Author I can confirm that TS_Video and DVD .iso files are now working in 1.5. Sadly, I had some pretty bad audio desyncing. Seems odd as it can transcode 720p .mp4 no problem, but struggles with 420p Mpeg-2. This is odd. PS3 has built-in mpeg2 support, so if it has a proper profile, then it should work automagically. The PS3 also supports mp4 as well, so it shouldn't be transcoding for either filetypes (and perhaps this is why your 720p mp4 works fine). Relevant to your situation, here are the mp4 & mpeg2 profiles support by the PS3 (from http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html): H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC) MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM) MPEG-2 TS?MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3?Dolby Digital?, AAC LC MPEG-2 TS?H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC) Can you provide some more details about your mpeg2 file? And details about the source (e.g. iso/VIDEO_TS folders/vobs/etc)? Thanks!
November 9, 201114 yr Thanks for the quick reply. The majority of my movies are just in the raw form. I hadn't settled on a media player when I was ripping them, so I kept most dvds and blu-rays in their original, unaltered structure. (Vobs for dvd, .m2ts for blu-ray). in 1.0 and 1.2, if I tried to go to a dvd folder, the PS3 marked it [DVD ISO], but if selected, they showed up as empty files. Now they play, but transcoding is the only option (with the aforementioned problems with languge track and subtitles) I'm a little over my head with all those formats. Perhaps you can point me to which versions of this free movie to test and I'll download them and report back: http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/ Edit: I revisited a blu-ray that I know I watched last week in 1.0 and it played the .m2ts directly. Now playing it with MEncoder is the only option.
