mikechy
Possibly one of the most exciting things I've seen in a long. Time. ~ $25 device that will run XMBC and stream HD?! Really? I want 5. Quote Link to comment
Rajahal
Wow! Impressive indeed! I wonder what the power consumption is like? Peanuts, I assume. Looks like the HTPC market is about to change pretty dramatically... Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
I think I read somewhere that power usage on one of the alpha boards (under load with graphics) was arround 300ma with a 9v supply so I make that at under 3w. Definately an exciting project, I really hope xbmc is successfully ported and optimised for the board. Quote Link to comment
intertan
any word if it can handle 3d movies? 7.1+ surround sound? Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
From what I understand it can do 1080P hardware decode at 30fps, so I think that puts 3d out of the question. I also was under the impression it wont be able to 5.1 (or 7.1), but I'm sure all will become clear in time. I was thinking these would be perfect for secondary media players for bedrooms, kitchens etc. Quote Link to comment
Johnm
This looks like it would be enough power to be a thin terminal too. Quote Link to comment

I could case less about 3d right now but 7.1 would be a min before I purchase this. Quote Link to comment
starknetwork
Update on the xbmc front, looking good: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/571 Quote Link to comment

While it might not be able to decode 5.1 or 7.1, surely it would be able to pass it through to an external decoder such as an AV amp? Quote Link to comment
Ford Prefect
...what one can gather from the specs it will only play H.264 encoded HD material, so it is good for a LiveTV box (DVB-S2 PVR-frontend). For your Bluray rips, you would have to transcode/re-encode... Quote Link to comment
opentoe
The device was made with keeping the lowest price in mind. Ships without a case, but one can be made easily. It also has a small amount of memory. 256MB I believe. How it would run XMBC? Not sure...that program does require some processing power and the RPI may not be able to handle it efficiently. The makers aren't worried about anything to do with media yet, they are working towards the educational aspects of this device now. Quote Link to comment
abs0lut.zer0
read a post yesterday about it running xbmc quite well and decoding 1080p video not sure about the audio ... http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/571 Quote Link to comment
dgaschk
Does anyone know of a way to get Dolby digital audio out? Is there a USB device that will work with XBMC for digital output? I did find this: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=119490 I wonder if either device will work. Quote Link to comment
