Unraid OS 7.4.0-beta.1 is live for testing!

Highlights:

• Shared task tray — background jobs from plugins, Docker, and VMs now queue into one tray with foreground recall from any browser tab, instead of the old bomb-icon workaround.

• Multiple custom networks for Docker containers — and additional network attachments now survive a container recreate/update instead of getting wiped.

• Memory limit field for Docker — exposed directly in Advanced View, no more passing it as an extra parameter.

• Live icon preview on the Docker Add/Edit forms.

• Configurable power-button behavior — Shut down, Reboot, or Do nothing, under Settings → Power Options. Good news for anyone who's had a case bump take their server down.

• Boot Device backups can now be downloaded directly or saved to the server, with progress tracking.

• A few fixes: Enter-to-start on encrypted array passphrase fields, File Manager no longer bounces exclusive shares out of /mnt/user/<share>, Plugins page no longer hangs on a slow/unreachable plugin's update check, and a VM startup PHP deprecation warning is gone.

• New hardware support: kernel modules/firmware for Realtek RTW88 8812A/8814A/8821A wireless adapters.

Security: updates across bind, libXfont2, libarchive, libssh, openssh, p11-kit, php, samba, wpa_supplicant, and xorg-server — CVE details are in the full release notes. Notification integrations also now use certificate-verified requests for the public API.

Under the hood: Linux kernel 6.18.44, Docker 29.7.1, 68 packages updated total.

Standard beta caveats apply! Please do not run on production. Test on spare hardware or a VM, and back up your flash drive before updating.

Updated my non-production "Backup" box to 7.40-beta.1 (no issues encountered during the upgrade).

One minor issue present, when I click on "Settings" -> "Power Options", a warning to say "When running Unraid virtualized, there are no available power modes" is displayed.

This Server is 100% physical (Intel i5-14500T, 16GB DDR5, Asrock ASRock B760M Steel Legend WiFi with its latest BIOS release - 14.02, mixture of HDDs and SSDs).

(I have set the new "Power Button" setting to "Do Nothing" and can confirm this works.)

I've also attached diagnostics.

I believe that warning always shows; it doesn't try to detect whether you are actually virtualizing Unraid or not.

Just thought I would highlight as it doesn't display this on version 7.3.2.

I don't have that "Power Button"-tab. Too old machine? ;)

Pressing once does the clean power off at least.

when I updated plugins after installing this release I now get a "Dismiss" button instead of a "Done" button after the plugin update completes. I found this confusing ☹️

Maybe the goal is to be able to dismiss the window and the update will continue in the background?

Maybe, but the update said it had finished in the progress window.

Unraid OS 7.4.0-beta.1 installed on three machines. On all 3, Settings > Fix Common Problems doesn't seem to be ready/working. Everything else seems to be working well.

Odd! There are no conditionals on this page, if the server has rebooted into 7.4.0-beta.1 it should be there. Please post the issue here https://product.unraid.net/b/unraid-os-prerelease-bugs-feedback and include your diagnostics so we can troubleshoot

I sort my plugin page by status. It does not move the ones with updates available to the top when the update check completes. I need to scroll down to find if there is any updates or click "STATUS" twice to move them to the top after the check is done.

No Power Button-setting and fix common problems doesn't work. Other than that its working fine.

I've deduced it to one of my installed plugins, just not sure which one yet, but I don't have many installed so finding the culprit shouldn't be difficult..

Edit: The problematic plugin is the "Dynamix System Buttons" plugin (probably should blacklist this plugin on 7.4.0)

Plugins – Checking for updates seems to happen super fast in Unraid OS 7.4.0-beta.1 – less than a second, whereas in earlier versions of Unraid it might take 2-5 seconds.

I think it checks for updates for all the plugins at the same time now. So it will be faster.

I'm testing it with a second Unraid license I have for testing, and the interface is much faster; well, everything is more "instantaneous." I like it. 🙂

I've been meaning to figure out how to have a private network between a Docker container and a VM in addition to the regular Docker macvlan bridge, and it sounds like this would be useful for that! I assume I'd still need to manually create the virtual network using virsh, and a corresponding Docker network, right? Will custom network management (for both VMs and Docker containers) ever come to the UI?

My use case is to have an isolated AI assistant VM for self-hosted n8n, rather than their standard, less secure Docker-in-Docker setup. https://docs.n8n.io/deploy/host-n8n/configure-n8n/set-up-ai-assistant#setup-2-self-host-the-sandbox-manually-advanced. Docker-in-Docker does work, but it requires using a privileged container, which essentially gives system-wide root access to that container. Not something I'm willing to do, hence isolating it to a separate VM. The network isolation is so only the n8n container can reach the sandbox VM.
