June 20, 201313 yr My supermicro cards already do staggered spin up. I think this is only on power up. If you press the spin down and spin up buttons, it should do an immediate spin up of all drives at once.
June 20, 201313 yr My supermicro cards already do staggered spin up. I think this is only on power up. If you press the spin down and spin up buttons, it should do an immediate spin up of all drives at once. Indeed. Assumed that was the discussion. Surely during operation it would need some fairly involved jiggery pokery to ensure all drives never got spun up at the same time... (outside of pressing the spin up button)
September 4, 201312 yr Is there any documentation of what amperage the WD Reds pull on start-up (assuming that is the highest load event)? I'm looking to build some custom SATA power cables for my modular power supply and I want to make sure I'm within the 6A per pin (using 18AWG) spec. I'd love to do 10 drives per whip, but I think 5 might be more reasonable.
September 4, 201312 yr Author I've seen 900ma mentioned in a HardForum post discussing this, but nothing formal in Western Digital's specs. I'd think 6 drives per leg would be fine.

September 4, 201312 yr Ok, sounds good. I purchased a Lian-Li D8000 so I can do four whips of 5 drives.

I am using these in all my servers and never had issues... even with old 7200 drives in the mix http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10226&cs_id=1022604&p_id=8794&seq=1&format=2

What a lot of folks do is buy these; carefully remove the connectors; and build custom cables with the connectors spaced at the right interval to very neatly connect the drives without any excess cable between connections. It's very hard to find the connectors -- I'm not aware of a source in < 1000 quantity -- so folks just buy these pre-made cables and re-use the connectors from them.

Was this at DigiKey what you were wanting?
September 5, 201312 yr Author Yes, those are the connectors. Good source -- it's been hard to find those in the past unless you were buying large quantities. Note, however, that it costs about half as much per connector to buy the cables from Monoprice and re-use the connectors from them [it does, of course, entail a bit of extra work in carefully removing the connectors.]

Just wanted to know if that was the connector in question. Only single connector model they had. The other models require you to buy a whole tray (2184 of them if I remember correctly).
September 5, 201312 yr Author Looking again, it's not really clear if the digikey connectors are in-line or end units. I THINK they're the in-line units. To build a nice cable, you need two different types of the the connectors -- several in-line and one end unit. The cables from Monoprice (or elsewhere) will all have one of the end connectors, and several of the in-line, and are easy to disassemble and re-use [you DO have to be careful]. That was, however, a good find -- I've looked in the past and couldn't find those connectors in small quantities at all.
