Need a 16 port switch / TP-Link OK?

Featured Replies

That's fine as long as you don't need a managed switch.

Never had a managed switch, so I don't know what I'm missing....

Since this is for small business / home use do I get any benefit from managed?

Not really ... managed switches allow fine grain control of where your bandwidth is allocated; but for home/small business use they're not really required => unless you want to limit your teenager's use of all the bandwidth on your broadband for gaming to keep a bit for yourself  8)

Your mileage will vary, but I find that the more expensive switches tend to be more reliable and last longer.  HP makes decent workgroup switches but you would be looking at $300-400 for 24 ports if bought new.

I agree with Brian.  Something like the HP 1810-24G (yes I'm biased, I have several!)  is well worth the money.  They seem to be really cheap over there in the US too!  (We pay $300+ for them here in Oz.)

In case anyone is interested Amazon has this same switch for $197.50 shipped versus the $220 shipped on Newegg.

A bit of counterpoint => I've had excellent performance with the low-cost TrendNet, DLink, NetGear, and Linksys switches.    The managed switches (like the $300 HP) do indeed have some nice features -- access control; static routing; and most significantly bandwidth monitoring and control => but if you don't need those features, the consumer grade switches work just fine.

Note that if you want the HP name, you can get an unmanaged 16-port switch for ~ $135 [HP J9560A#ABA ]

I have an 8 port TP link and it's great,  fast, reliable, runs cool, and energy efficient

I've been using that TPLink switch for a year with no problems.

I've also been using the SG1016 for the last twelve months (June 18, 2012) and am perfectly happy with it.

ebay 5324, 24 ports managed 1gbe for under $100.

the 6024 is a layer 3 switch, optional redundant power and config, for small change more.

Yes, I will see if I can find one of those in Canada.  Shipping from the USA is about the same as the purchase price.

If you can get a 6024 for ~ $100 it's still a bargain even if it costs you another $100 in shipping !!    Of course, whether or not you need a managed switch is still debatable ... but it IS a very nice switch  :)

e-bay has a few listed with auction prices ~ $100 ... but checking the completed listings they seem to sell closer to $200.  Never hurts to try, however:

That one even refuses to ship to Canada at all.  Interesting to see shipping prices for these vary from $50 to $250 to come to Canada.

The one that was $199, got zero bids...

Sorry, that there are no 5324's listed in CA. I'm sure there is an outlet selling them up there, they just don't use ebay. The 5224 5324 5424 are just newer and newer versions of the same thing. Probably goes back to the 5024 even.

They are not quiet http://www.ebay.ca/itm/DELL-PowerConnect-5224-Gigabit-Ethernet-SWITCH-24-ports-NEEDS-FANS-/380654193484?pt=US_Network_Switches&hash=item58a0c20b4c

Dumping the factory fans is not a bad idea, small noisy things.

Both the 6024 and the 5224 are managed. The 6024 is layer 3. Unmanaged is 3000 series 3224 3324, etc., probably just as reliable, but cheaper. I use only managed.

I use only managed.

Managed switches are definitely nicer ... but it's not at all clear they're needed here  :)

Oh so true, but I do use those features. I do think the unmanaged are as reliable.

I'd have liked a few of the bandwidth constraint features when my kids were still at home  :)

My Draytek router allows four SSIDs and separate bandwidth control for each.  Comes in handy occasionally, although it offers no such control for the wired connections.

+1, TL-SG1008D here, very cheap thing and runs really cool both the switch itself and the power adapter (many gigabit switchs for home use like some dlink, netgear run really hot...) but I really don't see needing something better for home use...

I can add (but I'm sure your research has already found this information):

The SG1016 has an internal power supply (no separate power brick), has no fan (so runs silently), runs very cool, and mine has been faultless, even with daytime ambient temperatures over 30C.
