Download issues

I'm not sure what's causing this.  Our download subdomain is hosted by midPhase.  I have contacted them several times about this issue, that some (but not all) people are having problems downloading zip files.  Here is their latest response:

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. As Jeff was inquiring earlier, do you know if any of these clients have Time Warner as their ISP? We have received reports from clients with Time Warner as their ISP that have had connectivity issues. The issue seems to be with a connection between Time Warner's network and our data centers. This is why most of these clients are able to access other sites just fine, but at times have issues (usually in the evening) connecting to either Midphase.com or a site that is hosted on our servers. From what it sounds like, it's possible that this might be an issue here. If this is the case, we have contacted the involved parties but they have not given us any updates or an ETA on a resolution of the issue. Please continue working with your ISP to ensure this can be resolved on their end and you are able to connect to your website without any issue.

If your clients experiencing these issues are not with Time Warner, please have them provide us with a Traceroute from their computer, and we will be able to troubleshoot further.

For Windows machines the command prompt is at: Start ? Run”, then type “cmd” and hit enter, then type the command(s) below one at a time: there will be one command per line. After entering the commands hit enter, wait a bit, and then show its results to us.

For Windows - one command per line listed below: tracert yourdomain.com (Please replace yourdomain.com with your domain name).

For Mac machines, the command prompt is called Terminal. To open Terminal, navigate to your Applications folder, open Utilities, and double click on Terminal. Then type the command(s) below one at a time— there will be one command per line. After entering the command (hit enter, wait a bit, and then show its results to us.

For Mac - one command per line listed below: traceroute yourdomain.com (Please replace yourdomain.com with your domain name)

When it's all done, please copy the details (or take a screenshot by hitting the Print Screen or SysRq key and pasting the image into your Paint program). To copy in the command prompt you can right-click and choose 'Select All' or 'Copy' and then highlight the output. Once highlighted, the text will be copied immediately. Simply paste.

For those having this issue, if you can provide the information they requested, I will pass along to them.  I really don't want to change hosts at this time, but if I have to, I will.

I have had random issues with the zip files since 5.0 was released. My ISP is Charter. I can run the trace route later and I will add it to this post.

For at least the last month, downloading has been "iffy" at best.    I was at a friend's house ~ 3 weeks ago and tried several times without success.    I assumed it was an issue with his internet connection, so told him I'd download it at home and give it to him on a flash drive that evening.    No luck -- couldn't do it at home that day either.  He's on a local provider; I'm on Time Warner ... so two different providers were involved.

Since then, I've often had incomplete downloads; or a "Unable to download this file" message -- a Retry will SOMETIMES work;  others not.  I've also had incomplete downloads (wrong size -- and fails zip integrity check).

From the other reports of folks having issues, I think it's fairly clear SOMETHING is wrong.

... an afterthought => I wonder if this may have to do with Internet Explorer 11.  Seems like it was released for Windows 7 about the same time these issues appeared.    I don't recall what we were using at my friend's house, but I use IE-11 almost exclusively.  Just for grins, I just tried the download with Firefox, and it downloaded with no issue in 2-3 seconds.

Then tried it with IE11 and got a "couldn't be downloaded" message.  Clicked on Retry and it downloaded okay -- but took ~ 30 seconds.

So ... I suspect this may in fact be IE11 related.  Hopefully that's helpful for your provider.

I did also reproduced the problem when many others did, when Tom released last versions, and I was using Firefox, for me all the times the problem happened (and I did tried a few times) the download appeared like finished but I did got an incomplete file. However today I did just tried again and I can't reproduce it anymore then I guess posting my trace may not be useful at all now.

Sent this to midPhase support and here's their reply:

Thank you for your response.  Unfortunately it looks like the traceroute that they ran was to lime-technology.com instead of to the subdomain that you have that is hosted on our servers, download.lime-technology.com.  Because lime-technology.com is not hosted on our servers, in order for the traceroute to be of help to us you need to make sure that they run the traceroute command to download.lime-technology.com instead of to lime-technology.com.  If you could provide us with a traceroute to that domain from one of the clients that is experiencing this issue we will be better able to help you troubleshoot this issue.

Having issues on my connection, Mac using Safari. It's not a browser issue, as downloading via one of my clients connections via VPN worked a treat.

I sent a link to this thread to midPhase support and here's their reply:

Thank you for your response.  Looking at that forum link you provided I do see a traceroute that goes to the correct domain.  It looks like it is able to connect to our servers without any problems and the speeds aren't very bad either.  I'm not sure what else might be causing this to happen.  I will go ahead and pass this ticket up to our Level 2 technician to have him look into this and see if they have any ideas about what might be causing this to happen.  He will be back in the office in the morning on Monday so you can expect a response back at around that time.

Here is my reply to above:

Thank you, much appreciated.  There are more replies in the thread and I will make sure it stays on topic.

Cheers,

Tom

I had some trouble downloading when my bandwidth was strained.  The unRAID download would start, then end prematurely, and not post any sort of error ... the file was just incomplete.  When I scaled back my other downloads, the unRAID download worked fine ... using Waterfox (the 64-bit Firefox variant) on Win7 x64 SP1.

I'm in Southern California, and am on Time Warner Cable (Orange County) ... I'm not sure where Lime Technology's servers are located, but here's my tracert if it helps:

... an afterthought => I wonder if this may have to do with Internet Explorer 11.

Definitely not related to IE - I was having download failures on 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 betas using Firefox on Ubuntu.  I resorted to using wget (on Ubuntu) and experienced 14 retries.

Since 5.0.3, downloading has been perfect.

I received a reply from midPhase support this morning:

As this is something that is working for some of your visitors, and not working for some others, and the traceroutes I was looking at seem to be able to make a successful connection to your account, the main issue appears to be with the timeouts on the server end or with the client's ISP while trying to download this file. Have you been able to try adding these files to your vps as opposed to the shared server account? There are many ways to have these files downloaded, such as using Anonymous FTP, breaking the files up into more than one file, and having two different files to download, or using things like Dropbox. As these files are pretty large, if there is a connection to the server using http, there are some timeouts in place that may end the downloading of this file when it is being requested by one of your website visitors. If you feel this is going to take more than 30 seconds for your client's to download, you may want to consider some of the alternative suggestions above.

Basically they are saying, "go find another download server".

Their servers are randomly aborting the connections.  This "working for some" is misleading the investigation.  Such reports came from people with faster connections who managed to get the file in full before the server aborted their connection.    ~30MB is a small size for a fast conection -- give those people a larger file, and I'm sure they'll notice the disconnects too.

Basically they are saying, "go find another download server".

And maybe you should.

LOL that coming from your hosting service!  That killed me!  :D

I had some problem starting my new car the last few mornings...

Maybe the car dealership will advise me that I can simply take the bus to work.  :D
