August 30, 201510 yr I was a die hard XBMC/Kodi user for many years. Then I wanted to sync libraries among multiple clients. Yes, MySQL is the answer but the difficulty, compatibility and reliance on many moving parts put me off. I used it for a while and eventually switched to Plex for it's ease of use. In addition to that, Plex.tv has a webclient in which you can use just about any device to stream to. This comes in handy for me since I use a blackberry to stream tv shows at night while everyone is asleep. I just ordered a RPi2 to use Rasplex on since it has a composite video output and we have a old CRT television where the kids are most of the time (it's a beast and unbreakable).
August 30, 201510 yr mysql server plus kodi-headless install = many moving parts ? Well, I had my setup up and running before you made that docker. Now, TBH, I prefer an interface to manage the server and Kodi-headless did not provide that. Yes, I could "manage" the library from a client and let that reverse sync the SQL, but my clients are not easily connected to KB/Mouse. Remote streaming turned out to be a HUGE advantage for Plex, as well as the "On Deck" functionality. Turn on the client, shows you the most recent shows to watch, easy. I also found that OpenELEC + Kodi to not play nice with my AVR for sound. Had to restart the AVR or Client several times to get the HDMI handshake to work. With OpenELEC + Plex it just works.

Anyway I do not want to "defend" my adoption of openelec. I thinks it's pretty common and future iterations of unraid vm's will incorporate it. It's like someone trying to convince me a bicycle is better than my Ferrari. I am starting a kickstarter so I can get that Ferrari. You guys need to Join my campaign and contribute lots of $$. I need that Ferrari. Can you use Plex in a Ferrari navigation system? I am trying to make it work on a bicycle.

Tell you what, when I'm no longer driving around in a Ford Focus, I'll donate to your kickstarter campaign. It's horses for courses TBH. Everyone always thinks they have the best setup and what suits one may not suit all. I'm a Kodi/Openelec guy, with Plex/Emby for streaming outside my LAN. Before that I was a MediaPortal guy, before that a WMC guy. I'm not averse to change and TBH I think if Emby made a Openelec like distro I'd be quite keen to give it a go..
August 30, 201510 yr I can think of quite a few ways in which a bicycle is much better than a Ferrari.
August 30, 201510 yr I also love the eye candy CHBMB mentions. I have been using openelec for years. Now you get the wetek device with openelec built in for $100. I read you can also install openelec on amazin fire tv devices. Wetek is not great or fast in terms of ui response, but acceptable. What is the interface like on the Dune players? I have never ran into a playability issue. I could NOT stomach Plex ROKU INTERFACE. Once you have used Kodi with a nice skin like aeon nox, I cannot go to the Plex interface. Openelec is basically an os that runs Kodi. It has a learning curve but it's great once you learn it. A lot of the learning curve is setting up Kodi to how you like it. The interface on the Dune players I have are very simple. Icon type menus which you scroll through. Firmware is updated via the UI, as well as all the other settings. They have a built in browser, widgets, and other things I have never even looked at. I use them %100 for video playback connected to my unraid server and other SMB shares. There is an iOS app out there and other things but I don't use any of that. And there are several apps you can run off the USB stick that will download cover art, movie info, pictures, etc. I should take advantage of that, but I'd rather view my content as a regular browser and scroll through that way.
August 30, 201510 yr When the older Sigma chips could only do 12MB/sec I thought maybe the media player world would get stuck in the mud but then randomly upgrading to a new a player and seeing 90MB+/sec in read speeds motivated me to upgrade all my players. Playing a high bitrate bluray or MKV file tiled the screen and paused a lot. Glad those days are over. Hey, here's a 90Mbps 236MB file. Good test to see if your network can keep up. I remember my old media players would always cut out before it ended. These days, no problem. I also have all the Jellyfish, MKV, and DVD9 test files if interested. 90Mbps Bird File I'd be interested in taking a look at those test file opentoe.. Thanks

It works VERY well for me on an old Asus EeeBox PC (Nvidia ION w/ Atom). I found it here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/88788/oe-install-and-package-status-thread#latest

Or just Plex on Unraid and a standalone Openelec as a single non-shared DB system? EDIT: OK seen your new post, think we posted at the same time.. Now I understand.

September 1, 201510 yr Since there are so many files, I'll just send you over an ftp account you can use to download them. I was pretty stoked when I was able to play them all. Even the 23-24Hz files. My old TV could never display those, but my newer one is able to adjust to all the diff frequencies. They are still uploading, I'm home today, took a few days off, so just enjoying some movies trying to stay out of our 4th heat wave this summer. My miners do not like the heat.
