Windows Nano Server VM?

Hey guys,

I know this is a bit early but I was wondering if you guys are thinking of figuring out a way to integrate Windows Docker Nano Server in UnRaid?  This would be pretty awesome!  I know way too early...

Since unraid manages and runs dockers natively now, what are the advantages of what you are proposing?

I think it's something to do with running Windows Docker containers?  :-\

Huh? I wasn't aware there were "Windows" docker containers. I thought that all docker containers were linux based, and the windows implementation of docker was simply a way to run all the normal docker containers inside a windows framework.

Well... I guess it's Microsoft's way to try to join the fun and screw up dockers...

Windows will be able to create and run windows docker containers, but there are limitations, firstly the OS for the container has to match the host, which will be a server OS, and that means no Linux container support.

then what the point MS. tsk tsk

So we will need a VM to run windows dockers?  Holy nested virtualization batman. Doesn't sound awesome at all, sounds like a mess. I reiterate my first post on this subject, what exactly are the advantages to setting this up?

Are there any windows only dockers out there yet? Will there be?

Open Source FTW!!

I've given this a good hard think and I've come to the conclusion that I actually don't have any need for any Windows programs anymore.  Considering 18 months ago I was running WHS2011 and IIS and everything I did was in windows it's amazing really.

And pretty much everything is either Open Source or Permissive License as far as I'm aware, other than Plex and Unraid....

Out of curiosity, how is Mrs CHBMB handling the conversion to strictly FOSS?

I didn't say she was purely using FOSS.  But one thing I'm sure we're all aware of is that any form of home server maintenance like OS migration comes with downtime and a degree of instability, which immediately affects the WAF driving it down.  This is transient and I'm pleased to report the WAF has now risen to levels exceeding that of the WHS2011 time.

She doesn't give a rat's ass what license stuff is under (although I know she will approve of the "F" in FOSS) as long as it works, and being honest, the stability of my system now, FAR exceeds what I was finding in Windows.  I was using it with FlexRAID, which would take a shit every so often and on about the third OS reinstall (Bear in mind on WHS, this can take a day to get everything setup right, even with backups I started looking back at Unraid as I knew that one advantage was it was so easy to completely "reinstall" luckily the V6 beta series was underway so that opened up the possibility of using dockers.  So she approves in the sense that I no longer have to spend a day fixing the damn thing at short notice.  Our whole house entertainment is run from the Unraid server, including LiveTV so if it goes down, it's not a trivial matter for my darling wife....  :o

The downside to coming back to Unraid from her perspective is I've become way more active in the community and now have a collection of friends with weird names like Squid etc... And I now spend my free time looking puzzled whilst staring at Gedit or Notepad++  ;D

But to be fair she's a laid back woman and like someone said on here once said, and I've told her the same.  "At least when I'm sitting in the house next to you on the sofa fecking around with the computer at least you know I'm not out getting into trouble or running off with other women"    ;D

Yes there are windows containers out there, I've read an article about a guy who got sql express running on the latest beta of windows server as a container, POC only of course he's not really doing much with it I would guess.

It will grow quickly.  I am not sure what they will come up with but it might be worth while to look into.  Don't think Microsoft's efforts should just be ignored.

I actually have grown to dislike Windows more and more but I have one major usage for it... Games.  Until I can play everything I want on Linux... I am forced to use it.  The girlfriend uses OSX due to Photoshop so that has to stick around... though she recently didn't mind to much using Photoshop on a Windows machine.
