  1. Right on buddy, yah that helps. I will prob just make a new disk share for plex, I know there is a good deal of space on some disks. I will also be expanding my array from now to months down the road. I will note everything that was said once I get back home and can mess with it. Seems pretty straight forward, hope it scans all my media fine. The main concern is my movies, just how they are labeled hope plex is smart enough to know.
  2. Thanks everyone that does help me with deciding. I will have to mess with it when I get home. So essentially I don't need a cache drive, though I have some spare drives laying around the house if I do need one. It seems all you need to do is make a *new share* (folder) on a drive with space for PLEX Cache I was getting confused with everyone's posts I read seeing /mnt/cache/apps/plex (thinking cache was their ACTUAL cache drive) when it was just a share they created for that purpose. So for example I could make a new drive share on the root of lets say DISK 2 ... disk2/plex/ and tell plex to use that folder which is in my protected array... correct or any disk for that matter. So long as you pick a specific share for plex to use anywhere on your array? Then basically you are good to go ? I really appreciated all the responses, love the community. I might need to bounce off you in the future for any other questions. Thanks again :-)
  3. I won't be playing media remotely. It will just be for the internal network, good to hear plex works well with unraid, just install clients on the local LAN windows boxes and you are off the races it would seem still trying to find out about this cache drive situation lol
  4. That's wonderful, thank you. I have ran across this in my research, any opinions? http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=19791.0 As for the Plex users, how does everyone find it work so far, any issues, is it speedy? Most important, do I NEED to have a CACHE drive ?
  5. Hello, I am new to everything UnRAID 5 has to offer, and it seems it can offer PLEX MEDIA SERVER right on the UnRAID BOX which is nice. Little history : Hello, I have been running my media to my many computers in my home the old school way, by just accessing the share withing 'network' via windows, clicking the folder and the file of the show or movie I want to view. It seems these days there are a lot of nice GUI's that are used, poster art, episode synopsis, network, etc. Looks really nice on the eyes. I was curious to what would be the best to use with UnRAID. I ran plex and XBMC long time ago, and it just was not cutting it for me, I always liked MPC:TH with my codecs I used on my computers around the house. However I think things have come a long way in regards to the GUI apps we can use today. Plex I didn't seem to like and was really annoyed with it actually when I used it last. from screens I have been seeing it looks a lot better. Do you still need to have the server for the app on a windows system or is UnRAID able to be the host server for the media app you are running / plugin's etc ? What I have been trying to find out is the step by step instructions to getting PMS setup on my unraid box. Also what I need for it to run correctly Do i HAVE to have a cache drive in my unraid box ? do I need any specific plugins other then PMS If a cache drive is needed, what size would be recommended 1TB 2TB ? I have been hunting for some step by step instructions of doing a FRESH install of plex. My unraid 5 USB is a FRESH install, no plugins or extras have ever been installed, but PLEX run right from UNRAID looks REALLY nice, and for the 3-4 computers around my house hooked up to TVs it looks very user friendly. I would love the assistance on anything I have asked above, I am on the road right now so trying to gain some knowledge on this so when I get back from (for the short time I am there) I can tackle this matter and have it running nice for my family before I have to leave again If anyone could spread some light on this matter I'd appreciate it. Thanks :-) I'd love to make a section myself for the step by step for everyone to access once I get it going... This is all I have found for installation instructions so far... INSTALLATION copy PlexMediaServer-*-unRAID.txz to /boot/extra/ (this installs PMS on every reboot) install with installpkg /boot/extra/PlexMediaServer-*-unRAID.txz 2 steps ? Didn't really tell you if anything else was needed, cache drive etc. Trying to figure out how this works, how plex can just access tv and movies only from the unraid shares and not everything :-/ Still researching .....
  6. Hey thanks for that with the preclear script, I will look it up shortly here .... http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0 Thanks again, looking forward to expanding my array
  7. Right on, sounds simple enough, I am not home for a few weeks still but it will be first thing to do update to the current build, as well as go grab 1 or 2 new hard drives ! Time to expand. I need to consider a new case now. I don't mind mine, but considering maybe something better, sleeker, nicer looking. Must do some research, I don't really need hot-swap drive bays but something that can fit 14 - 20 drives. My current setup now I can support 14 drives MAX, (6 on-board 8 supermicro SAS) perhaps that is enough as drives are getting lager, but from memory not looking at my case right now, I think I can do a max of 12 drives. I have a Coolermaster full tower case, it has to be approx 4 years old.
  8. You rock thank you, sorry my old school brain kicked in, low level format. I just was not sure about preclear / reiserfs back to NTFS. I am probably going to pick up a 4TB WD RED when I get home in a few weeks add that as parity and work on expanding my array over time moving forward. Being I just upgraded my motherboard + RAM + server version, unraid is back to working well like it did when I started, I ran into kernel faults and it was the mobo. I am looking forward to everything to come. I am tempted to move from Rc16c to the '5.0i386 stable' but I have not encountered any issues thus far, so I don't know if it would be even worth it. That 'stable' version just posted approx 1 day after I upgraded my hardware.
  9. Right on good to know, I always used -A on my drives that are in my system now (This will result in a starting sector of 64 for the resulting partition that will be used for unRAID's file system. ) Why is this not needed anymore with version 5? As well any preclear'ed (unraid) disk I take out of my system not going to be used in my UnRaid system anymore, can I just simply format it NTFS (quick) or do I have to low level format the drive ?
  10. Awesome thank you, so just preclear the drive as per normal ?? This is the command I used for 4.7 when I ran 4.7 ... is it the same for 5.0? preclear_disk.sh -A /dev/sdX (where X is the drive) and I will be good to go ?
  11. Was just price shopping for 3TB hard drives for my server and came across a 4TB drive, guess I have not looked for a while and didn't know 4TB were on the market Western Digital WD WD40EFRX 4TB Red SATA3 6GB/S Cache 64MB 3.5in Hard Drive I was curious if unraid has made support for 4TB drives, I wouldn't mind getting one for parity for now. I didn't see anything in the release notes so I ASSUME they are not supported, but doesn't hurt to ask or if it is being looked into for future support. I only saw this in release notes for --Changes from 5.0-beta6b to 5.0-beta7-- - added GPT support for drives larger than 2TB everything larger then 2TB ? Just want to confirm specifics Let me know if any of you know, Thank you ! :-)
  12. Cool, Thank you, I will change that when my parity sync is done. Much appreciated :-) Looking forward to getting my SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 today! Thank you everyone !
  13. Quick question, I have my BIOS SATA set to IDE, I had that set like that with 4.7 - Should I use AHCI ?
  14. Thank you for ALL THE HELP everyone. And those that read too. By tomorrow I should know how everything is running. Doing a parity sync with UnRAID 5 rc16c (pro) Did some speed tests before the sync and holy crap what a difference 'proper' hardware makes, this isn't even with my SAS card in yet. I shouldn't have cheap'd out basically downgraded from an Intel board I was using when I first purchased UnRAID. You get what you pay for, and I payed for frustration for a bit there lol. Anyways the new hardware seems to have made a massive difference as well as finally updating to Unraid 5 from 4.7. I really like it. Once you understand the fine tuning and where everything is, it is wonderful. Fingers crossed about the progress. Keep you posted. I am a day away from PROBLEM SOLVED. Again thank you for taking the time to read, and reply back. Having people in the community is a great thing.
  15. I have not run newperms no. I think I got security shares setup for the most part. Another question, when I stop my array, and assign my parity disk, it says new parity disk installed, that is correct right? I assigned all my data disks, to be sure I could see and access them as stated above, then add my parity and let it do a sync. It thinks it is a new disk because it was never added yet, right ?
  16. Alright I am all setup on version 5. However a few things. I can not seem to get the shares setup like I had in 4.7 Example : 2 users on my server > admin and guest Example the shares in 5, doesn't have a section to allow admin to all shares, and exclude guest on some like 4.7 had. I want to be able to add shares I want to guests ONLY (ie not have access to anything) am I missing something? Doesn't seem to have the EXPORT read/write features I am use to from 4.7 I don't want my flash exported either :-/ Another thing, my server is broadcasting in my network, but when I access "tower" I see all disks as well as shares. I want it to prompt me for password every time (guest or admin) I just want to see shares not the disks. I want admin to see all shares, or disks (I usually map my drives on the admin PC) but I only want guests or other nodes on my network to see "tower" but have limited access to shares. And one other thing, I was accessing some folders on my server, I can access them all in the UnRaid GUI, however in windows explorer it saying I have no permission to access certain folders. ie, I can access "The Simpsons" but can't access "Family Guy" Right now I have all my disks online, without parity assigned until I figure all this out. I will not be writing to my disk at all until I am 100%
  17. OK that's cool. I still preclear my disk(s) before I add them to my array too.
  18. Ah good to know, assign all data first, save or start the array, then stop, add parity. seems easy enough. I can't wait to see how everything goes !
  19. Thanks man, yah the bad disk was in fact bad, and already has been replaced and rebuilt. But still these critical issues are happening. So tomorrow the new motherboard is going in, new ram, still keeping my current CPU. Have the SAS Card on order in the mail, so I will have to use my Promise PCI for a bit longer till it arrives. I am then going to wipe my flash, format and start a brand new UnRAID 5.0 flash drive, and start from the ground up that way. My thoughts is it should keep all my data in tact and not alter anything. I will just have to allow for one parity sync I do believe. UnRaid will probably see them all as new disks, so I hope to god I don't lose any information going this route. Cheers
  20. Perfect I can't wait to see how all this goes. Perhaps I should update to UNRaid 5.0 Release Client. I am not sure though ? I saw your instructions here >> http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=27595.0 and thinking about just starting a fresh flash of 5.0 -- setting up everything from scratch. I assume my data will be good and in-tact? I will have to learn how 5 operates with shares and all that access. I will probably take screen shots of my 4.7 to remember everything I am looking at. As well I have copied everything from my current flash drive, made a backup , and rar'd it. This way I can skip this so to speak >> http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Migrating_from_unRAID_4.7_to_unRAID_5.0 What you think ? I wouldn't mind being able to toss in 3TB drives in the future as long as just being 'current' ------------------------------------------------------------- I am not sure if I need specific drivers or add-ons for the SuperMicro card, or if it just works, I am trying to find information on that now so I am set and ready to go tomorrow. The write issues I am having internally on the server, as well a locally to the server are very annoying. Speeds and Performance are at an all time low copying to, and even reading from. Did a SMART test all drives seem fine. Been going for months on this, and I have nothing more to say then it is the motherboard as well as the promise controller card I have in my system.
  21. weird, link works here NEW LINK: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/#specifications ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AMD970/SB950 ATX AM3+ DDR3 2PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 SATA3 USB3.0 CrossFireX Motherboard Unless I am not understanding this correctly Multi-GPU Support Supports AMD Quad-GPU CrossFireX™ Technology Expansion Slots 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue) 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black) 2 x PCIe 2.0 x1 2 x PCI AMD SB950 controller : 6 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray Realtek® 8111F, 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s) Hope that helps, get back to me with your thoughts. 22. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358 Looks decent, I didn't quite understand how it worked but you said it has or comes with a breakout cable ? or do I have to order this with it ? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816116097 As well, this card plugs into the BLACK PCI-E on the Asus motherboard I am going with? being that the card connection is shorter, it still plugs into that PCIE (GFX) slot to have 4x? ----------------------------------------------------------------- And I think I am going to go with this board here ... http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=76522&vpn=M5A97%20R2.0&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1336 let me know what you think of the motherboard , thanks
  23. Awesome, thank you. I am trying to now track down a 4 port PCI-E / SATA card that will work with this, I can only find SAS cards This one looks half decent >> SIIG DP SATA 6Gb/s 4-Port Hybrid PCIe (SC-SA0R11-S1) Link >> http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=48_19_901&item_id=063148
  24. Perhaps 4.7 could be an issue with NIC / Mobo / Hardware , and I should go to 5 release client. sigh, I just don't want to mess anything up here and am really wanting my stable server back :-( http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=17247.0 ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus mATX AM3+ DDR3 AMD 760G 1PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 1PCI SATA2 VGA GBLAN Motherboard perhaps this board, asus generally makes a quality product
