  1. One thing I never asked is it as simple as plugging in the card and hanging your drives off of it or is there something else I need to look at?

I have 1 out of 6 empty Sata connection still open do I need to fill that first or does it really make a difference. I'm going to say it doesn't make a difference, but figured might as well ask anyways. ;)

  2. I've recently purchased a AOC-SASLP-MV8 card with the cables to hook up 8 additional drives. I'm not really ready for the card nor the cables, but I wanted to have everything on hand when/if I need them because I'm kinda like that. Prepaired I guess.

Anyways one question I have is there going to be a change in performance because I'm not using the onboard Sata connections vs a card? My system is listed in my signature just in case anybody wonders and says it all depends on your setup.

What I'm trying to get down to is, should I hang my newer drives off the expansion card or put my older drives on the expansion card or is there no advantages either way? The reason I ask is my older drives are obviously are only going to be really used to read opposed to write, but if there is no real benifit either way then I'll just stop worrying about things and keep on moving the way I'm moving. ;)

  3. Think of unmenu like the regular gui interface that you use, but with a ton more features and options.

Some people have gone as far as putting in scripts so when they turn on their machines it would run until a specific time and the shut its self off. For example. You come home at 5pm and turn on your machine. It would then sit there until around 10pm and then shut its self off. That way there is no forgetting or interaction. Maybe set it up so it runs until 10pm during the week and on the weekend shut off at 12 just in case you stay up late watching a movie.

It really just depends on what you want specifically so somebody can tell you how to do it.

  4. I can tell you from my last purchase that my Sata card cost me $109 + $40 for cables. However that might be because of the model I purchased or the demand. I've seen Sata cards pretty cheap, but you might want to weigh the cost of the card vs the cost of a power supply, which is obviously you are.

I couldn't even begin to give you advice on what card to use for either of your machines simply because I had somebody point out to me what I needed.  :D

  5. limetech,

Normally if the email address is flagged I practically always reject them, but like you said the ones with the Ip's I normally let them go simply because like you mentioned they might of been a victim of a dynamic IP and like you said somebody else's wrong doings.

I do feel sorry for you a bit tom, your forum is a lot larger than mine so its a lot harder to patrol, but its been a habit of mine when I login to quickly scan the members section by newest members and take a quick look at who registered last and what they posted. Normally you will not see any spam, but sometimes you will see 0 posts or that one spam you where looking for. As soon as I see spam I visit their profile and use the check URL and add them to the stopspam site. Then from there I do my thing of deleting the post and/or checking their domain they visited from to determine if I have had enough posts from it to ban it.

Your biggest problem is going to be the selection. You probably get users from all over the place and to ban say *.cn is kinda hard because you might actually have real members or users from there unlike myself who doesn't foresee much 4Wheelin in Jeeps. ;)

  6. Or worst case people actually manually sign up for forums and email addresses and simply pass the info to other who logins and does the damage. The original person who registers never does anything so his/her IP isn't listed as a spammer and the actually spammer uses dailup accounts or bounces from proxy to proxy to hide his/her real IP.

I know it sounds bad, but I litterally banned all of

    *.cn

    *.ru

    *.pl

and several other domains simply because I run a Jeep site and the odds of wheeling with them was rather slim, but I've seen tons of spam attempts from them. big one being *.cn which is china

  7. Joel L. I just recently purchased another 2GB stick for my machine for a total of 4GB. Would that allow for more Cachin'g of files or is there a set limit when it begins to over right newer reads over older reads? I'm guessing that the cache of files doesn't take up much memory, but was a bit intriqued enough to ask. ;)

I personally picked up the extra memory because it was rather cheap and figured if I wanted to do more I would have the extra Ram.

  8. Added "Stop Spammer" MOD about an hour ago and has already stopped a couple spammers.

In addition, notice is hereby given, any member who has 0 posts and has not visited the forum since 2010-01-01, may be deleted at any time.

With this tool you can select a page-full of members and submit them to http://www.stopforumspam.com/.  What I'm finding is there are numerous members that show up on that list.  Most have never posted and either never visited or visited last a long time in the past.  So.. if these are all spammers, why haven't I've seen far more spam?

There are so many forums out there and so many different anti-spam checks setup in the various forums that they might of signed up either via robot or script and either forgot to come back or they recieved an error running their scripts because forum code has changed and they never updated theirs. When I ran phpBB2 long time ago I would of been hit with 10-15 messages per week, but since I've switched to SMF my spam content has dropped big time.

I of course I personally have a handful of moderators to move said spam to a Staff only section so regular members do not have to see it and as the Admin with a second I/we double check said reported spam and add the spammer to the spam list and keep it clean. From what I can tell we do not have that check in place so you might/will have some spam because spammers are sneaky by changing email accounts often and some even use dialup or use proxies to avoid getting caught.

  9. I changed back to "unlimited".

Thanks!! Your welcome to change it back at midnight if you like.  I will let the members I have been talking to start emailing me there questions.

Ok.  I've noticed that 'Max PM's for all membergroups is set to 'unlimited' - I can see how this might be abused, so what do you think are reasonable limits?  Maybe 100?

I have mine set to 50. I figure unless your a moderator or somebody that gives a lot of tech support via messages there is no reason to need unlimted. You could always setup member groups based on posts and give those that post a lot more messages since its very obvious they post a lot and more than likely need the extra space. Those with hardly any posts often would not need as much.

  10. Im sure you already have it set, but make sure you have guests are "not" allowed to post. As well that software only catches known spammers. If you have people that are joining, spamming and then leaving check their ips and send them to the stopforumspam.com So they can't come back and continue to haunt you or others. ;)

  11. Stop it you guys before I get the bug to build another machine. LOL

I like my Cooler Master 590, but they seem to be harder and harder to find. I really only wish that you could install the 4-3's without having to pull everything out to take out one drive, but I'm guessing that's just the way it is.

  12. I had the pretty much the same problem you are reporting when I first setup unRAID. I checked it with XP and didn't see any issues, but was a little paranoid. I ended up just formatting the USB, creating a new build and copying over my config files and its been running for months just fine.

  13. I had a power outage a month or so ago and it lasted of course 3hours well beyond my UPS's.

My unRAID server, Desktop Pc and my Sat/DVR all have their own UPS's. Of course I come into my office and it dawned on me. None of them have monitors so I couldn't login and shut them down welp I could my Sat by pushing in the power button lol. I just walked away praying that they would shut down gracefully.

Anyways After power was back on I turned on both PC's and sure enough they fired up just normal like they should. Its nice having a good UPS and software and a cable that does its job well.

  14. Yes I use this one in particular.

    http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547

It more or less checks anybody that is going to register against a known spam list and if they match it dis allows them to register.

What I did after install is I disabled the nickname check since well some guy with the name of Tom could of been labeled a spammer, but the odds of his nick not being the same guy with a known spammer ip or known spammer email address.

This is on my 7year old forum. Of course I haven't been using it ever since, but when I converted from phpBB to SMF I ran the above against it and well it found tons of spammers and removed them.

8879 Spammers blocked up until today

This is what it looks like in the admin panel. As well it shows you right when you login if there is anybody that might be a false positive and allows you to pass them. Normally its always a reported email and ip address in the database that matches. I just simply hit the deny and it deletes their attempt to register. I've yet had one person email me or use the contact form and say they tried to register, but could not.

    Enable/Disable MOD Stop Spammer    X

If MOD Stop Spammer is enabled, every time we check a member:

    Check their username

    Check their email  X

    Check their IP      X

By default, every time you check a member with MOD Stop Spammer it will check their username, email and IP. If you are getting too many false positives because of their usernames you can turn that option off. We wouldn't recomend you to turn off the another 2 options (to check their email and IP) unless you know what you are doing.

Oh yeah I forgot if you do install this you will find the settings for it under

    Registration > Settings.

I'm running 2.0, but I'm guessing the settings are the same for 1.1.12
