  1. Does ps3mediaserver transcode or does it simply create a link from the files to the ps3? Asking because if I go low budget and build a low end machine am I going to have problems when I need a faster machine to do the transcoding.

    My current server works great for SMB file sharing to my HTPC, but there isn't transcoding going on.

  2. My little box doesn't turn on from the remote, but honestly I'm up and moving around so its nothing for me to turn on the HTPC while grabbing my remotes and turning on my Sub.

    Of course now my problem is building something for a buddy that will support a good storage solution. He has the PS3 and I'd like to use unRAID for storage, but figuring out how to get the data to his ps3 is stumping me. I was hoping ps3 would support SMB, but it appears it requires a media server of sorts to work.

    I see a few posts in the pm3mediaserver talking about how some got it to work and some have problems. Does it transcode or does it just supply a link to the files?

  3. Only suck part is I have to build it all since well he has nothing. I do have a toaster sytle nas laying around that I could loan him since it does have a media server built in, but I honestly think he will out grow it pretty quick.

    Doesn't Twonky do the same function? I haven't looked into it as of yet, but it was something I heard thrown around a while back. I guess its just a matter of making sure it works on unRAID too.

  4. I figure let Tom do what Tom does and well ride the wave until either my surver crashes or we are givin another wave to ride on. ;)

    Nice spoken  ;D

    I was hoping it was taken in a positive manner. ;)

  5. So it sounds like I/we would need to create a ps3mediaserver and rip his DVD's as MKV files.

    Thanks for the insight. Not physically owning a device kinda makes it hard and even harder to apply what I don't know towards the project. ;)

  6. I can watch movies on my HTPC which is Linux based watching dvd.iso files.

    Playstation3 as well uses the Linux OS unless I'm mistaken. I'd like to watch/stream ISO files on a PS3 too. Trying to build a system for a buddy, but I don't currently know as of yet what it will and will not do.

  7. I have a buddy who owns a PS3 and well honestly hes rather technology challenged. I know it sounds bad, but its really true. Hes seen my AsRock HTPC and my unRAID server setup and really wants to give it a go, however he wants to use his PS3 as his front end and I'm even more challenged when it comes to the likes of a PS3. Other than it took me 5minutes to figure out how to turn one on since other than playing with his once I've never really even bothered since I own a HTPC and a Xbox360.

    Can they play ISO files? The reason I ask I've been ripping a lot of my DVD's to ISO's and removing everything other than the audio track of choice and main movie. Converting to Xvid or Dvix takes forever.

    Can they work across the network via Samba or do they require a Media Server to read the files?

    Hes running Firmware 3.5.1 which I did figure out after fumbling around with the remote for a bit. LOL

    Pro's Con's I'm all ears. ;)

  8. I just think of Tom is the floating spirit that appears now and then. If it wasn't for the members here I wouldn't of ever bought in and use my unRAID server.

    Anymore I just let my server idle away and access it when I need it, which is nearly every day for one reason or another.

    I figure let Tom do what Tom does and well ride the wave until either my surver crashes or we are givin another wave to ride on. ;)

  9. I like to copy files from one drive to another too. Of course I'm not talking a few meg at a time either. I like to rack up the gigs and let it go.

    I used to have an old server that would often spit out errors and I later found out it was a controller card not a hard drive, but thats another story all together. I found it by shuffling files around....

  10. Sorry didn't catch it.

    The only problem with See-thru is you either go all out or go simple and very clean. Kinda of a challenge to hide things in a see through unless you get really creative wrapping your wires. I'd probably never do it, but others have and will. ;)

    I've been really tempted to grab some sheet metal and make own case after I build a desk I've been putting off for a couple of years. Of course it wouldn't be super nice, but in the end I'm thinking of how far am I really going to go. I have 5 drives in a Cooler Master 590. I don't think I'll make the capacity.

  11. I personally like the User shares vs Disk shares because of the following.

    I use User shares because I set everybody to read only and no matter what content I add or if I add additional hard drives its percieved that its one drive or a few depending on the shares.

    I use Disk shares set to hidden read/write so I can play admin on any machine on any account in the house by using

    Run > \\tower\disk1 or whatever disk I choose

    Also I'm really paranoid when it comes to Virus's and knowing that I have an open mapped drive with read/write permissions even thou I was the only one with read/write and everybody else has read only. Running scripts on my windows machine made me nervous so writing to hidden shares aka drives made more sense to me.

    I really tried to figure out the split levels and honestly I got really frustrated because no matter how much information I gleemed from everybody there was always something I felt like I was missing and even thou I tried to ask it 10 different ways I never seemed to get it. Not that support is bad, but maybe my frustration out weighed my patience.  ;D

  12. Nope do not stop the array. Just goto town.

    Heres how mine is setup just to give you an idea.

    Disk Shares - hidden read/write

    //tower/disk1/Movies

    //tower/disk2/Tv

    //tower/disk3/Mp3

    User Shares - read only

    Movies include disk1

    Tv include disk2

    MP3s include disk3

    The great thing about User shares in my case as long as I create a folder in any of the Disk shares for Example Movies the user shares will see it and display anything in them. The end user wouldn't have a clue that I'm moving things around.

    So if you have Movies on disk1 and want to move them to disk2

    Create a Movies folder on disk2 and then move them over.

    You have to make sure that any subfolders that are in disk1 are recreated on disk2.

    When you are done moving files you can simply delete the Movies folder on disk1.

    I normally update the users share from include disk1 to include disk2
