  1. Look at windows for example. ;)

You are watching a video, get an email and in the background your machine is cache'ing files all over the place to offload other things. Heck in the old days when we didn't have a lot of RAM your machine would be swaping like crazy.

I notice now and then a slow down in either transfer speed or pairty, but nothing I can't live with.

  2. Believe it or not when I first came here I was very disbeliving. I took a

3ghz machine I have laying around

    120gig Sata

    10gig IDE

    6gig IDE

I ran it through Joe L's preclear script just because everybody kept talking about it.

    120gig passed

    10gig IDE failed

    6gig IDE passed

Loaded it up and let it rip. During the pairty build it kept telling me that the 10gig drive had issues. Of course I knew it did because the preclear script told me it would.

Installed a movie on that bad drive and played it a few times. Ran the parity check again and it had the same errors so I knew the error checking was doing what it was supposed to.

Got crazy and pulled the power plug. Started the video up again or maybe I unpaused it I can't really remember now. Worked so I was convinced that the machine would protect its self.

Installed another drive of simular size and all be damned it rebuilt and I was good as new. Well old junk, but it recovered LOL.

Now I'm running with a bunch of drives listed in my signature. I still have two drives full of my movies and TV shows sitting on a shelf just in case, but I currently have zero issues. Oh make sure you get a good quality UPS. Nothing worse than losing power during a write. Would cause parity issues.

  3. I had the same issue a while back with my USB stick. I formatted the drive and rebuilt it from scratch and it worked fine. I'm guessing something was currupted or misplaced. Not sure how, but after a rebuild its been working for months flawlessly since.

Luckly when I first had the issue it was right after I first built my machine so I expected some kind of problem right out of the gate. All happy now. ;)

If that doesn't fix it you could have a faulty USB too. Of course I'm just guessing here.

  4. From the unRAID GUI

    Shares

    Export settings

    Disk shares (SMB):

From here I choose "Export read/write, hidden"

I personally use those settings so I can access my shares via

    \\tower\disk1

    \\tower\disk2

    \\tower\disk3

    \\tower\disk4

Then my user shares are all set to read only. Everybody can read their data all day, but can't really write to it and if I need a share writeable I just give that one permission.

I'm kinda virus, spam paranoid ;)

  5. When I built my System that is in my signature I forgot to plug in the fan that was mounted to the CPU and within a matter or minutes it would shut off.

Another PC I have when I put the fan/heat sync on the processor some how it did not clip down and the machine would shut down within seconds off boot. Don't ask me how/why I didn't check it during cpu install.

Yeah I look like an idiot admitting to faults with 2 PC's, but out of the dozens of machines at least the only two problems I've ever had where/are my own. ;)

  6. Really want to test it?

Put a couple of drives in and let it build your parity.

Play a movie and then for the heck of it pause your movie

pull a power cable on the drive that has the movie. ;)

I did and the parity drive took over and played the rest of the movie just fine. There was a little bit of a skip, but hey it worked fine after that.

Turn off your machine and rehook backup your drive and then turn it back on. Your machine will tell you there was a problem and then it will start to rebuild the drive that you unplugged.

  7. I don't have a SSD yet, but other than boot time my machine is pretty fast with a 120GB 2.5" drive.

I have all my videos on unRAID. I use Ember to scan all of my videos and of course create .nfo files. I have my HTPC setup to use folder information when I setup the scan types. I don't allow XBMC to scrape since I have my HTPC and 3 other machines in the house that do the samething so my library is the same across all my machines with everything centrally scraped and ready to go.

I use cache_dirs and told my HTPC to update the library on every startup. I can scan through 600movies, 1400 or so Tv episodes in aproximately 90seconds, which of course doesn't include boot time. Basically as soon as I turn on my HTPC, turn on the tv. Go and grab a drink or whatever my machine has finished booting up, scanned through the entire library and even if it hasn't finished scanning I just poke around in the Movie or TV section for what I want and since its all in a library and since I don't allow XBMC to scrape its loaded up as fast as it possibly can.

I click on a video and since my drives have not yet spun up it takes aprox 3 to 5 seconds for a video to start.

  8. Just got a 2TB EARS drive and dropped it into my machine with Pin 7&8 Jumpered.

I started up the script and I get a

    Clearing will NOT be performed

    I ran the following

    preclear_disk.sh /dev/sdf

This is what ls -l /dev/disk/by-id

    Generated

So I'm pretty sure I have the correct drive, but so far its not agreeing with me.

  9. \\tower\movies

    \\tower\tv

    disk cache option

    Is your best friend.

I just update my files on unRAID and set all of my XBMC machines to update library on boot. Of course all my fan art is generated by ember prior so I don't have to worry about it scraping.

I even run command line scripts via windows to automate ember to find my art work and I use command line scripts for my tv shows in MIP (Media Info Plus)

  10. Personally I have to machines on my network that I utilize a lot.

    unRAID

    Download

unRAID -Stores and protects my files.

Download - My BitTorrent machine running windows and some basic apps that I need it to run.

Why seperate? Well if my Download machine gets hacked or dies it has no ties to my unRAID machine other than I use some custom scripts that I copy files to my unRAID machine. Nothing is mapped in a read/write capacity.

Remote access to my unRAID machine? Nope not going to happen. Remote access to my Download machine? Nope not going to happen. There is nothing that is that inportant that I can't do at home or do later. Yes it is very cool to pick up my phone or a laptop and get into my network and control things, but honestly I've learned years ago that you give them an inch and they will take the mile.

I do have a pogoplug on my network with a USB stick plugged into it that is 8gig. If I really need data I can grab it off it or I can store some files on DropBox that I often grab/store. However just like the two machines up top. They both serve different roles and they do not mix/match.

Sure I might be over the top with my thought process, but in my older days I could check my logs and I would see hourly attacks trying to gain access via SSH/www exploits. Give them a window and they will some how try to gain access. I was lucky and never had anybody successfully gain access because I was over the top with my methods at that time, but it was also some work to maintane.

  11. And I'm curious about your AsRock ION 330 + XBMC Live setup...seriously considering a setup like that, but I've been waiting for the Boxee Box, as I really want the thing to be usable as a consumer electronic device, as it were - per remote control, as a couch potato. But it's not ready yet, and XBMC is very fine...

Yeah I love it. I just add content to my unRAID setup. Turn on my AsRock and it scans it to the Library and then I grab my old school Xbox remote and get sores on my butt from sitting to long. LOL

Plays 720 and 1080 content just fine.

Probably a subject that should be discussed in another thread or I'd glady talk with you via PM so we don't clutter this one up a lot. Plus the guys over on xbmc.org are awesome for very specific questions.

  12. I don't know why, but I have 5 machines in my house with all pretty much the same setup and sometimes my laptop would argue with me and couldn't seem to find \\tower on its own so I just edited the hosts file on my laptop and its never had an issue since. Of course I don't know your underlying issue, but in the end if you can't figure it out after looking at every option you can always do this.

  13. When I first got my machine and the array was not online since I was preclearing my first 3 drives I precleared all 3 at the same time. Of course it felt like forever, but the machine had nothing else to do for 30+ hours and I was impatient. LOL

Now with my array online I typically only run one at a time just to keep the load down and I guess its a mental thing that I'm not beating up the machine. As well I'm normally only updating one drive at a time anyways so it makes perfect sense.
