  1. My SMB settings are just like yours except Macos Interoperability is Yes. That must be a new default, because I didn't change it. I do not have any MacOs on my network. I'll try changing it to No and see if it solves the issue. Edit - I checked it right after restarting the array after making the change of "Macos Interoperability" to No. It still failed. I tried again a couple of hours later, and now it works. I am able to copy files starting with "_." to the Unraid share.
  2. I posted some screen captures in this other thread. I start the VM from the VMS page, from the Debian template, "Start with Console". This opens the VNC window. It starts with UEFI Interactive Shell I type "Exit" and get to the BIOS. I navigate to Boot Manager, and select UEFI QEMU DVD-ROM. (where the Debian installer is mounted) I select Graphical Install in the Debian Installer. I select language, locatoin, and keyboard, I see a text mode screen with red and blue progress bars "Loading Additional Components" Previosly, it completed, and went to Network selection (DHCP) where the VNC window went black and non-responive. This time it freezes loading partman-xfs at 38% in the text mode installer. What am I doing wrong?
  3. I don't think it is the sync software. I have the same behavior from a Windows command prompt: I:\Sun-E\Standards Archive\802.11\2003\2003-11 Plenary\Motions\Carl Stevenson>copy "._S03-ADCL-C-0003!!PDF-E.pdf" "\\T440\e-i-root\Sun-E\Standards Archive\802.11\2003\2003-11 Plena ry\Motions\Carl Stevenson" The system cannot find the file specified. 0 file(s) copied. (Yes/No/All): y 1 file(s) copied. I:\Sun-E\Standards Archive\802.11\2003\2003-11 Plenary\Motions\Carl Stevenson> I cannot copy the file to Unraid (T440). (file not found) I can copy the file to another local drive. (C:) I can copy the file to another Windows share (\\MARS) I will try to get a Linux system up with an SMB share to test it on. I'm new to Unraid and have probably missed a configuration item.
  4. The source files are mixed origin - some came from Windows and some came from Android. There is a possibility they are part of distributions that were made for Mac and Windows. Regardless, these files have been successfully stored on and copied between Windows drives, and hopefully Unraid can also support the Windows file namespace.
  5. I typed "exit" from the UEFI shell, got to the BIOS, and was able to navigate to the DVD device, selected it as the boot device, and the Debian installer started. I can select language and keyboard preferences. However, after it reaches the network setup where it attempts DHCP, the VNC console goes black and never comes back. This console is a windows opened from the same browser as Unraid, and has this URL: t440.local/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/vnc.html?v=1729196260&resize=scale&autoconnect=true&host=t440.local&port=&path=/wsproxy/5700/ There is a cursor visible in the middle of the black window, but it does not follow the host system cursor. From here, I can only close the VNC window and force stop the VM. Trying again gives the same results.
  6. I don't remember how the cores were set. Here's what I've got now. I did "insert" the bootable Debian DVD ISO file. I picked br0 because I want to use the shared bridged LAN, not the private isolated virtual LAN. Here is the template currently - please advise on any setting changes needed to allow it to boot. I tried starting it again, and got the same UEFI Interactive Shell. The commands offered in the manual for "Troubleshooting Stuck at UEFI Shell" do not work, same responses as shown in my first post above.
  7. I'm migrating from a Windows Server to Unraid, and copying data. I use BeyondCompare to sync data to external USB drives on the Windows server. This works as expected and all files are synchronized. As I change the sync target to my Unraid system, I'm finding many files fail to copy or sync. A few examples: 4/20/2025 4:05:35 PM Unable to copy I:\Sun-E\___snip___\._S03-ADCL-C-0003!!PDF-E.pdf: The system cannot find the file specified 4/18/2025 5:26:26 AM Unable to copy D:\___snip___\._DESTINATION_ON_RIGHT.mp3: The system cannot find the file specified I know Linux hides filenames starting with ".", so so maybe the sharing "hiding" these files as BeyondCompare verifies they have been copied. Under Settings / SMB, I checked the Hide "dot" files setting, and it is set to "No" What other settings are needed to provide full transparency of filenames with Windows and Linux clients?
  8. @bmartino1 at this point I am not using Docker at all. Currently I'm working with a simple disk array with shares. I'm trying to understand why enabling IPv6 causes the Unraid system to be unreachable by its local name "T440.local" and the shares to become unavailable by the share name T440. Disabling IPv6 causes these names to work again.
  9. Using Unraid 7.0.1. I was working on setting up LAG (not working so far), and noticed the interface defaulted to IPv4 only. I use IPv6 sometimes, so I set it to IPv4+IPv6. Later I noticed that file sharing was broken for some clients. All clients could ping the Unraid server at T440.local, but one Windows client gave only Error 53 when I tried "net view T440". Another windows client gave the shares list. From the system that failed I was able to get the shares list by reference the server by IP. "net view \\192.168.1.4" All clients could ping the server at the IP. The failing system could ping T440.local as IPv6, but forcing IPv4 failed: c:\>ping /4 t440.local Ping request could not find host t440.local. Please check the name and try again. I changed the network interface on Unraid back to IPv4 only, and shares are working consistently for all Windows clients again. c:\batch>ping /4 t440.local Pinging t440 [192.168.27.4] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.27.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.27.4: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64 Why?
  10. I'm following the manual to set up my first VM in Unraid 7.0.1 It says "Select which CPUs you wish to assign the VM - You can select up to as many physical CPUs that are present on your host" Does this mean that the CPUs are statically assigned? On my T440 there are 8 CPUs. If I assign 4 each to Windows and Debian VMs, and one VM was working on a CPU intensive task, and the other VM was idle, the idle VM's CPUs would be wasted? Can I assign all 8 CPUs to VMs, or do I have to leave one for Unraid? I know from running in-OS virtualization environments such as VirtualBox, I can run several VMs and the CPU resources of the host system are shared. Also can I change the assignment later? Maybe I go with 4 and 4 now, but later decide that 5 and 3 would work better? Other notes (inconsistencies): From myserver.local/VMs, I click Add VM. I'm given a choice of OS. I choose Debian. This presents a form with various options. There is nothing like "Set the Template type to Custom" In addition to the CPU assignment, there is also a "CPU Mode:" setting, defaulting to "passthrough". I find that under "Advanced Options, so I leave it on. For Machine, I see "Q35 is the default setting". However there are many choices for Q35. Pick the highest number Q35-9.1? What does it the number mean? (not mentioned in the manual) EDIT --------------- I completed the form to the best of my ability and tried to start it. I get the UEFI interactive shell. I tried the "Troubleshooting Stuck at UEFI Shell - In the event you are stuck at the UEFI shell after booting your VM, you can enter a few commands to manually trigger the boot sequence:" fs0: cd efi/boot bootx64.efi It did not work Oops - I see I typed "fso:", not "fs0". I tried again with "fs0:" and got the same result. Now I'm just trying to get back to where I started. From the VMs page, I see it listed as "Started". I click the Stop All button, and it spins a while, then returns to showing as Started. How do I stop this failed VM to try again?
  11. Moving the question to this forum area as more appropriate. See initial thread started here.
  12. The use case where I believe it should help is when two different systems are doing file transfers to the Unraid system. The MAC/IP load balancing should allow each system to benefit from both GBE links, giving total throughput higher than a single GBE. So, I'm trying to get LAG working between my Unraid server on a Dell T440 and a Cisco SG200 switch. On the switch, I set up the two ports connected to the T440 eth1 and eth2 as a LAG. In Unraid, I set Enable Bonding=Yes, Bonding Mode=802.3ad. Bonding Members shows eth0, eth1. (the dropdown shows eth0 grayed out, and eth1 with a checked box) I left Enable Bridging as Yes. I assign the bonded interface with a static IPv4. If I plug one of the two Ethernet cables into the switch into a port that is not part of the LAG, it works as expected for a single GBE. If I plug both cables into the two ports defined as the LAG, it does not work at all -- The Unraid static IP does not respond to pings. I can still reach the T440 over the IDRAC, which has a third Ethernet port, and IDRAC is set up as an DHCP client. If I remove the two ports to the T440 from the LAG on the switch, leaving both cables connected to the T440, even with Enable Bonding still Yes in Unraid, the interface starts working (like a single GBE)
  13. @itimpi. good idea on the config folder. I will still look into Unraid Connect once I figure out the "Loading" issue.
  14. First time user, just got Unraid running today. As I configure things, I want to back up my configurations as I progress and be able to back up if I make a mistake. I found the Save Flash, which saves the entire boot flash. It would be better to not have a 700+ Mb file for every version of configuration, though. So I found Unraid Connect. Wnen I go to this page <https://connect.myunraid.net/dashboard> while logged in to unraid.net, all I get is "Loading" forever. Is it down, or are there other steps necessary to access and install the plugin?
  15. My T440 server has a single video output. It displays the UEFI BIOS process, and then Unraid as it boots up to a login prompt. At that point, the video is irrelevant because I can access Unraid over the network. Eventually, I'll be adding Linux and Windows VMs. I have one application in Windows that creates a status display on a video output. Once a Windows VM boots can it be configured to "take over" the VGA output on the physical server, even if Unraid is displaying a terminal there?
  16. Following the guidance in this thread, I now have Unraid booting on a T440 server for the first time, and I'm looking to create the file systems. Here's the physical view (IDRAC) of the installed drives: Here's how it looks in Unraid: IDRAC sees both 256G SSD drives. Unraid sees only one. Why? I have the Unleashed license so there should be no limits on devices. Also I see that Unraid calls it a "DELLBOSS_VD" - I have not yet created any VM or any virtual drive storage. What does the "VD" in the name mean, and is it related to the two drives appearing as one? Back in IDRAC, it seems that a "Virtual Disk" has been "automatically" created. Should I find how to delete or decompose this back to separate drives, and let Unraid manage it as a pool? Or is the server already doing the same as what Unraid would do in terms of redundancy?
  17. I purchased the Samsung Bar Plus 256 G for my UnRaid boot device. I downloaded USB Creator and tried to install UnRaid 7.0.1. The first time I ran it I got "Error running fat32format. Failed to allow extended DASD on device". I formatted the drive, and tried again, and it appeared to complete normally. I installed the USB in the T440 server, and tried to boot. It started to boot, then gave the "bzmodules checksum error" I saw this article that says to re-create the drive. So I ran USB Creator again. And now it gives the "Error running fat32format. Failed to allow extended DASD on device" error again. I try USB creator again immediately, and it proceeds with the writing process. It succeeds reporting ""Unraid 7.0.1 has been written to Samsung Flash Drive USB Device". I cleanly eject "Unraid G:" and install it in the T440 server. Retry boot of T440. This time I got to Unraid login. So maybe it is OK? Or is there something I should be concerned about?
  18. My T440 server has two GbE ports. I can find how to configure them for LAG in Windows or Linux. Presumably if my Linux and Windows are in VMs, UnRaid will need to configure and manage the LAG on the physical Ethernet. I searched on Aggregation, LAG, and Link Aggregation in the unraid manual and found nothing. Can you point me in the right direction?
  19. I have read the section on Storage Management. I'm still not clear on how I would set up two SSD nvme drives as a mirrored cache / pool. ( cache = pool? or not?) Once mirrored the two SSDs act as one drive. How do I partition that as as primary drives for Windows and Linux VMs? Is there any further documentation on that?
  20. I'm building an UnRaid system on a Dell T440, with an array of 5 12G LFF drives for 48G total bulk storage, and two Nvme drives of 512GB each. Unraid will host a Windows VM and a Linux VM. I was initially thinking one SSD would be dedicated as the boot drive for the Windows VM, and the other for the Linux VM. As I read the manual, I'm now thinking that the nvme should be used as cache - "Virtual machines will perform best when their primary vDisk is stored on a cache-only share" and "By default, Unraid will create two user shares for use with virtualization on Unraid. One share to store your installation media files (ISOs) and another to store your virtual machines themselves (domains). If you don't already have a share you use for backups, you might consider adding one as well to use for backing up your virtual machines." So UnRaid will create two shares for each VM. The primary vDisk should be configured as cache-only, which will force them to reside on the SSDs which are defined as cache. But the SSDs won't benefit from parity protection (although less likely to fail, still possible). So I will also create another share in the main LFF array and use it to back up the VM primary disks. Correct?
  21. OK, that is certainly unusual, and maybe a bit risky but hopefully manageable. I read the article on the drives and saw the video. I'll acquire the Samsung Bar Plus. I will plug it into a 6" USB Extender to reduce the risk of it getting snapped off since it will be left plugged into the server.
  22. One more question - what about multi-monitor? Can two video outputs and monitors be virtualized? The Windows system I'm virtualizing has two monitors with extend Desktop.
  23. I keep reading that UnRaid boots off a USB flash drive. That is fine for an initial installation or recovery, but doesn't seem ideal for long-term use. Can I create a partition on an nvme drive for UnRaid to boot from on an ongoing basis (hopefully not to often
  24. I've been reading this article to learn about hosting VMs in UnRaid. I'm familiar with virtualizing Windows and Linux in a host OS using a platform such as VirtualBox. When starting a VM, the display appears in a window as part of the host OS desktop. Does UnRaid work the same way? When I start Windows Server and Debian VMs in UnRaid, will I see those as windows in the UnRaid environment?
  25. Thanks! I will look at those videos. If I wanted traditional RAID with hotswap, could I use a Dell PERC RAID controller with 5 drives and still use UnRaid for managing the NAS and two VMs?
