  1. Thanks. I tried the DOS method again and got one of the BATs to work. Unfortunately, it was the one that wiped the ROM of the card. Doh! So I am looking forward to getting back at this task! Jeff
  2. I used the info/files in your "latest" update. UEFI USB got me a UI I didn't recognize, so I changed the boot to non-UEFI. That got me a failed procedure, so I was going to try the UEFI method. I was able to boot to the EFI interface ... now I need to read what I need to do when there. madberg's post(s) lead me to maglin's. Deeper down the rabbit hole I go ...
  3. OK, alrighty, to recap (and make sure I understand, I download the latest toolset from this entry " Update on 17.04.2017, v4 <--- this is the latest, use this one! "? That creates the boot USB ...? I already have the P20 download from Broadcom/Avago, so I am ready to read and follow the READMEFIRST at this point? Jeff
  4. Maybe I have read too much. Between madberg's thread and the downloaded SAS2Flash Utility Guide, my head hurts ... and I still have no clear path to flashing my 9211-8i to IT mode. Which is the best/simplest ... boot to Linux Live and run the utility, boot to DOS 6.22 (if I remember how) and run the utility or boot to something else and run the utility? Failing all else, I have a Win 7 x64 box nearby with an open PCIe 3.0 x16 slot ... Sorry for being dense. I rarely have this much difficulty grokking new stuff. Jeff
  5. Coupla questions. If the answer is "read more of this thread" I will do it! Otherwise ... The files on the first page or so of this thread for my LSI SAS9211-8i are from 2011. Any reason I shouldn't use the current files (from 2016 I think)? The read me notes mention Linux capatablilty, yet the O/S' talked about are Windoze and MacOS. Is there an EASY way to flash the BIOS from my unRAID installation or, perhaps better yet, can't I boot into Linux live with a USB stick and flash? I didn't see any description to do that, though I might have 'dozed off with all of the Windoze talk. Jeff
  6. I waded into the thread you linked and found the files for my 9211-8i card. I noticed that the files are eight or so years old and am wondering why I douldn't use the latest files from Broadcom's website dated 2016? Also, madberg's notation for those files say Windows and unRAID. My controller is in an unRAID box, but it seems like it's be easier to boot to a USB drive to flash instead of to an O/S or even unRAID. If someone can give me some guidance o n this before I go back and read the remaining 50-something pages, I'd appreciate it!
  7. OK. It still needs to be flashed with the IT version of the firmware, right? Other than not setting up an array in the BIOS, I dodn't see a setting for "IT mode."
  8. I downloaded what appears to be the IR mode and IT mode firmware from Broadcom. This is what I use to flash, correct? How would I then run the card without the BIOS? It does take forever and a day to boot. Jeff
  9. Upon advice from this forum I replaced a Highpoint (Marvell) SATA card that was dropping disks with an Avago/LSI 9211-8i. My searching tech sites/forums suggested the card should be flashed with IT mode firmware, while a forum post or two elsewhere said it wouldn't matter. The card swapped one-for-one with the Highpoint and unRAID booted and immediately saw the individual drives. Pareit 2 rebuild is now in progress.
  10. Jumped on eBay and bought a fresh pulled LSI 9211-8i controller for $40 and two breakout cables for another $17.00. Guess I will never know why my Highpoint 640L took a crap, but that's what it *has* to be. Will know in about a week I guess.
  11. Hmmm, I will look at that. That means my Highpoint 640L has a Marvell controller. I haven’t yet found what part is on the motherboard. if I change controllers will I lose data or will unRAID read the disks and reintegrate them into the array?
  12. You are referring to the onboard SATA controller? I will be able to disconnect the six drives attached to the motherboard, add the HBA, reattach my disks and not lose data?
  13. I have an array with 5 data disks and two parity disks. Several days ago just after it would have Moved data overnight, disk 5 and Parity 2 had red x's. Stopped array, ran long self-tests and both passed. Added disk 5 back into array and successfully rebuilt. Then added parity 2 back and BOTH it and disk 5 had read errors/failed. I repeated all of this two times. My array also has a hot spare that I used as parity 2 the THIRD time. Same results. Disk 5 rebuilds properly. I add the spare as parity 2 and again, the new and perfectly operating disk that is parity 2 AND the disk 5 fail. I'd do it again, but the definition of insanity came to mind. I am out of ideas. Jeff
  14. Where can I find the URL for this plugin?
  15. There is joy in my life again! IOW, it worked. Thanks, Jeff
  16. Thanks. deerhilltower-diagnostics-20170508-1656.zip
  17. Somehow, unRAID no longer creates the libvirt.img file when enabling VMs. The VM tab appears, but the page is blank. And no .img is created at the libvirt storage location. I say "no longer creates" because I was able to create a VM and install an OS previously, but not now. Jeff
  18. In my creating, bollocksing, deleting and re-creating VMs, is it possible I have deleted some important file from unRAID? Is libvert.img created when I enable VM's or is it copied from somewhere, i.e. the libvert image storage location? No matter what I do I cannot get the VM page to show the templates. Alrighty, I went to enable Docker and got (the default) path does not exist for /mnt/user/system/docker/docker.img and appdata. Might whatever is wrong aslo be causing my missing VM tab content? edit; intially looked at setting up Dockers and got path does not exit. I pressed ahead anyway and found that unRAID created docker folder and docker.img. It does not do that with libvert.img. When I shutdown I notice a text line that slips by that says libvert not running.
  19. Thanks. Any tips on what folders to specify for libvert image on VM Manager page when enabling VM's? There are some settings present on the latest unRAID version that are not mentioned in the manuals or tutorial videos. jeff
  20. I thought I was making progress on figuring this out. I read every Wiki and forum post from members having problems similar to mine, and I have watched all videos I could find. I had previously been able to create a VM with the image located on my SSD set up with Unassigned Devices. I have even been able to install Linux and then JRiver. As long as unRAID was running, the VM did as well. But I have never been able to shutdown/restart unRAID and have the VM restart. I can even "shutdown" Linux and reboot it as long as unRAID has remained up. Restarting unRAID, there is no VM. The VM manager still says yes and the VM tab is still there, but it is blank. To begin again, I need to wipe the SSD and run through the whole process again. So that is question #1, what setting do I have wrong that is causing my VM to not be persistent? Question #2 ... I have lost ground. Somehow I have gotten (more) confused about settings where VMs are stored when unRAID is down and settings telling unRAID where I want my VM (on my SSD), and now I can't even create a VM. I step through the VM Manager page and a VM tab appears, but it is blank. Jeff
