  1. OP, you might want to consider getting a skylake xeon e3 v5 instead of a haswell chip. Newegg has already started to sell them. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100008494%20601116093
  2. I've had a 4tb seagate desktop drive (ST4000DM000) running as my parity drive for about a year now. It's a good drive. I'd prefer a WD red nas drive but I already had it so i'm going to run it. I might eventually swap it out though for a 6tb red and reuse it as a data drive.
  3. OP, to answer your question you should have no worries hooking 2 backplanes per cable. You could probably get away with more to be honest, especially since you're only running green drives, but i'd stick with 2 per cable and you should be good.
  4. I run 2 backplanes per-lead on mine no problem. Corsair HX-750w with mostly reds installed.
  5. Either should work. But you will want to post on the pfsense forum to make sure. Just a disclaimer: I don't run pfsense. I really have no need for it. I use an Asus rt-n16 flashed with shibby tomato with a couple extra wired access points around my property. Just to let you know, because when it comes to actually helping you set up and configure pfsense I will be pretty much useless
  6. Running it from a vm just adds another layer of complexity to the configuration. Also, when you stop your unraid array your whole internet will drop out.
  7. Yeah binhex's deluge-vpn is great. So is the filezilla docker. I run them both all the time.
  8. This is certainly a lot easier way to go and what I would do if you don't need every bit of data running through a vpn. pfsense isn't really worth it unless you are sure you need it. Even then I wouldn't build a separate box for it right away. You can run it on an old laptop temporarily to test it out and make sure you even like it or can manage to set it up right.
  9. A lot of people do it because they are trying to run their whole internet connection through a vpn. Depending on internet speed most all home-consumer routers don't have the processing power to handle it. But like mr-hexen said it's complicated getting it set up right. Running a Asus router with wrt or tomato is light years easier.
  10. Thanks gary. I'll definitely get a cable then. I never got a manual with my card so I didn't think there was one. Probably a pdf on their site. I'll have to go look for it.
  11. I guess no one knows. I will probably have to buy a forward breakout cable and test it myself.
  12. If I were to install a Supermicro SAS2LP in my main windows 7 computer would my Samsung 840 pro be bootable from it? I've tried to research if this controller supports booting in Win 7 but I can't find any definite answer. The reason I want to run it is my X58 chipset doesn't have onboard SATA-III support and would like to add in a SATA-III card so I can speed up my ssd drive. I have an extra SAS2LP controller card and would like to use it if possible??? What do you guys think? TIA Here's my system: Asus P6X58D Premium X5660 @4.2ghz. EVGA 980ti 18GB DDR3 @1600mhz. Samsung 840 pro 256GB (boot drive) WD Black 4TB
  13. Excellent news! I still have 2 sas2lp cards and I guess I will add them to a new server that I plan on building at the end of the year. Saves me from having to buy more lsi 2008 based cards. Good work guys!
  14. Run this from the dos propt sas2flsh.exe -o -listall or from efi shell sas2flash.efi -o -listall Alternately you should be able to boot into unraid with the controller installed and it should report the firmware version and wether it's in IT mode or not in your syslog. You just have to scroll down and look for it.
  15. I plan on building a new server sometime next year. Probably be an 8 core e5 broadwell. I'm waiting on motherboards with built in 10GbE and lots of pcie slots.
  16. Bravo! Looks good. One thing I did was put the 120mm fans on the other side of the fan wall so I had more room get my hands in to work on the backplanes, etc. Looks good though. I'm sure you'll love it. Did you end up disabling all your SAS Roms or are you keeping one of the M1015 Roms active?
  17. That's so cool! Same setup Muahahhaha I "fixed" it somehow..... I want a rock solid system, I guess I will see what's going on after I preclear those drives, I have no idea how long it takes. I am still in contact with SM, TUMS what bios version do you have? I have 3.0. Did you check your setting for GEN X for the m1015? By the way, how do you control your fans based on HDD temperature? Running 3.0 bios, AFAIK it's the latest. As far as fans I haven't really messed with them I just leave them at 100%. If they die a little sooner no biggie. I tried changing it to gen2 in the bios and the 01h error still didn't go away until I re-flashed and totally got rid of the boot roms.
  18. I've got basicly the same setup as you and was getting the same error message. I had to flash all 3 controllers again without boot roms or it wouldn't play nice. Just disabling them isn't enough. Apparently LSI 2308 doesn't want to peacfully coexist with 2008 controllers with the roms active. I was getting bios hangs and all kinds of crap. Once you get rid of all the roms everything's good.
  19. Stock cooler is way too loud, I am obsessed with quiet Gotcha. I don't know what to tell you if the holes don't line up on that bracket.
  20. That's a hell of a heat sink/cooler for a processor you're not going to be overclocking anyway. If it was me I'd send it back and use the stock intel cooler that came with your CPU.
  21. Yeah, I was pretty surprised too. It's like night and day difference compared to the stock fans. I have 15 4TB wd reds in the case so far and they rarely get much over 30C unless i'm doing a parity check.
  22. I had one of the stock norco fans die on me within the first couple months of owning it. I installed these noctua fans and it's VERY quiet. As in I could sleep next to it. And that's even with the fans spinning 100%. I still keep it in the basement because that's where I have my server rack but I could keep it in the living room if I wanted to. It's quiet. 3 x Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm 2 x Noctua NF-R8 PWM 80mm
  23. I just bought a couple refurb LSI 9240-8I cards for $89 each on ebay. I will take my chances..... No way am I paying newegg prices. Now I just need to unload these SAS2LP cards
  24. NO ... FAR less than that. A complete system (motherboard, memory, and Xeon) will draw 20-25 watts when the CPU is idle [not counting whatever your hard drives are drawing]. Gary don't forget the load from the additional driver controllers. I would love to see a sub 25 watt, 24 data+2 parity+2 cache=28 drive server. Do you think you can do it? I'll answer what I think and that's no way. Once you start adding a bunch of drives, even low power WD reds, all bets are off.
