  1. I thought i9s would be more reasonably priced since it's supposed to be mainstream processors. I wasn't really keen on getting x99 since it's somewhat outdated, and I wasn't interested in upgrading it anytime soon after I build the new rig.... Other than the price are there any advantages with going E5 vs i9?
  2. I started unraid system with low energy core i5 thinking the power consumption is the most important considering the rig would be on 24/7. A few years later, turns out, my gaming rig (i7 4790K/nvidia1070) AND unraid rig are both on 24/7, and this is for a particular reason. My gaming rig, which I use for occasional gaming/VR/etc, also records sports games / foreign shows overnight (this uses ~35% of processing power), and I then edit the recorded shows using premiere. The edited shows are passed on to one of the VMs on unraid for encoding. I use the gaming rig for recording shows because it drops framerate as soon as CPU is maxed out. Obviously, I did not anticipate the whole encoding stuff when I built the unraid rig, but now that I realized how much horse power I potentially need, I started thinking about getting one a rig with a decent number of cores/threads and merging gaming PC and unraid altogether. I was originally thinking about building a new rig with xeon-d, but I couldn't find a mobo with enough SAS + PCI-E x16 slots. Then I heard about the recent core i9 news, so now I'm thinking to go with Core i9, find a decent x299 mobo with ipmi. Here is my workload for both gaming and unraid: GAMING RIG: - Recording shows using Elgato HD 60 S in 1080 - Video editing using Premiere - Occasional video games - Occasional Oculus VR Unraid: - Regular VFS/smb stuff - Plex powering 2-3 users - 3 VMs (all Win 10); One of the VMs encoding - Sonarr/CouchPotatoes - Torrent/Usenet - Crashplan What are your thoughts? do you think core i9 is an overkill? I'm also concerned about power consumption, the whole reason I went with LE i5 to begin with. whats your thoughts??
  3. I had installed windows 10 using SeaBIOS because I was having issues with resolutions. But based pin the pinned topic, I'm learning that OVMF would be much better choice for CPU pinning. Are there anyway to switch BIOS? I would rather not have to re-install windows / Adobe Encoder if I didn't have to...
  4. I updated my unraid server to 6.3.4 this morning and my user share stopped working... everytime I try to add a new file to my user share, Windows says "You need permission to perform this action" Any reason why I'm getting this error? Edit: I realized it's actually happening to 1 folder within the user share. Other folders within the same usershare are working fine
  5. Hi there, I've been trying to automate couple of workflows by transferring massive files to unraid, and then a VM would pick it up for a process. The issue I've been seeing is that whenever I transfer massive files from my physical windows PC to unraid share, it seems to be clugging the entire Unraid system, VMs pause, plex becomes unusable, main page would take couple minutes to load, etc... Anyone else experienced the issue? Can you give me a recommendation as to how to fix it?
  6. I just updated my unraid to 6.3.1 and it seems like sonarr has stopped working. it gest suck while starting. Anyone else having the same issue?
  7. this could be a stupid question, but I don't see any option for me to change it when I go to "update vm" I don't see Cirrus under graphics card. Are there anywhere else I should be looking?
  8. Not sure why you think it will take days. If you follow the instructions you were given, it will be 10 minutes max. You're right, it only took 10-15min. thanks!!
  9. Thanks Guys, I can download all mycontents again, so I'm not too worried about them, but then I just realized unraid doesn't really have a quick format so it could days days before having unraid back up and running. is there any quicker way of getting rid of all my shares?
  10. ah got it, is there anyway to quickly reformat all drives?
  11. I actually reformatted my usb, and installed 6.2 on a brand new usb. Shouldn't that have accomplished what you're reffering to?
  12. Now that 6.2 is out, I'm wondering how I can have a fresh start on my unraid server. I installed 6.2 on a new usb, but whenever I try to create array, it tries to have a parity and from somewhere pulls user share that I used to have with my old config. I tried stopping the array and used "New Config" as well, but as soon as I start my array, the same happens. Is there anyway for me to have a fresh start?
  13. I cannot edit "auth" file using windows, it just tells me access denied. Any recommendation as to what I can do?
  14. you're right both of my cache drives dropped and I just stopped the array, forsome reason I dont even have an option for cache drive anymore
  15. I'm getting following error in each of the unraid pages. What could be causing this error to show? Warning: array_key_exists() expects parameter 2 to be array, null given in /usr/local/emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/include/DockerClient.php on line 340
  16. Do you have front-panel usb connectors? Are all of them live (connected to the motherboard)? Its possible (and even likely) that you have USB headers on your motherboard which arent connected to anything. Yes I have 2of usb 2.0 headers unused (using 1/3) and I have 1 usb 3.0 header unused. I tried all three usb 2.0 headers, I can only connect to one of the same bus.
  17. You have to go into the bios and play with the ehci/xhci handoffs settings. If you are lucky, you might be able to separate the controllers. I thought that was when you have only one BUS, I ran lspci | grep USB and it said I have three controllers. when I run lsusb it says I have 4 buses (I don't know if that's possible considering I only have three controllers). Whenever I have usb 2.0 devices connected, I can only use BUS 3(even when I connect usb2.0 devices to usb 3.0 ports). when I connect usb 3.0 devices to usb 3.0 ports, I'm using BUS 4. I cannot seem to be able to get to BUS 2 or BUS1, or even 4 with usb 2.0 devices.
  18. I ran lspci | grep USB and it mentions I have three controllers, yet when I try to plug in my printer usb to all of my 8 ports, it always shows up as bus003, the same bus as one used for unraid USB stick. Is this possible? What's interesting is that when i plug in usb 3.0 stick, I get BUS 004 one additional, it's weird because the terminal mentioned I only have 3 controllers. Anyone know what could be the issue?
  19. I've been having bunch of issues with my server lately, and I wanted to start fresh. Is there anyway for me to reformat or use new USB but keeping all the files in HD? First time I did my server, I remember unraid "cleaned" the Hard Drives, so I thought I would ask if there's anyway to keep them considering the file system doesn't need any alteration.
  20. I thought that was for PCI controller, will it be the same for MB ports as well?
  21. I'm having trouble passing through my card reader to my windows VM, so I wanted to try passing through the entire controller. The issue is I've already maxed out on my PCI slots, so I cannot add any PCI usb slots, so I wanted to see if there is anyway I can pass through my motherboard usb controller. but, I don't even know how many usb controllers the motherboard came with. Any one know if I can do this or if there's a way to pass through portion of the USB ports from the motherboard? thanks!
  22. I got a card reader with SD Card that I'm trying to pass through to I'm tryring to pass through my SD Card reader to windows VM, but for some reason unraid cannot detect the reader. The reader has SD card plugged in, so I have no idea what the issue is. Is this not supported? When I look at the USB devices here are the devices shown in SysDevs: USB Devices Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.
