  1. As to your question about drive labeling, I have suggested this very thing as a new feature but nobody was interested in the idea. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. I like it. I'm now using your crop on a couple of my unRAID servers. Thanks!!
  3. Well without unRAID, you would probably be rockin Windows Vista with some external drives All joking aside, I own many unRAID plus and pro licenses. I've looked at unRAID many times over the years and finally took the plunge with V6.1 due to the awesome GUI that just makes it stupid simple. I'm playing with dual parity on 6.2 but the parity didn't bring me to unRAID nor did the dockers or VM. I don't even run parity on all my servers as I have identical complete backups in chassis in my rack. I looked at all the usual options and wanted a NAS OS that was easy to navigate, easy to set up for a Windows guy and a helpful community if I had issues. Yes the other main NAS OS's are free and no fictitious drive limits, but unRAID sold me on the simple, easy to use GUI. Love the way it presents the most relevant information on one page. Monitors my smart data, shows my drive temps, pools all my drives together. So although I came to unRAID for different reasons than most, the fact is, I'm here Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. So even if you go into settings, then into scheduler and set the "mover" it still doesn't move correctly? Wasn't sure if you've actually set a mover schedule yet. Sounds to me like that you haven't told unRAID when to move the files yet? As to the Windows 10 and network. I do not believe this is an unRAID issue as Windows 10 will randomly have issues finding other Windows machine, including other Windows servers, on the network. I have just set mine up as a read only network share so the folder is always visible under "this computer" in Windows 10. Hope that helps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I'll have to read more about that. Just a quick skim of the forums it looks like it is way more than I need. That's not a bad thing, I just meant that what I was proposing is what I would assume is a fairly minor change to the GUI. And I have to be honest, I use my servers are pure data storage so I don't run any VM's, no dockers, and I really don't want to start installing plug ins. unRAID runs perfect for me as vanilla. Not to be a prick but 99% of the issues, I'm going to say "we", all have is when it's something a user has done. Be it a docker, a VM or a plug in. Rarely are they long threads about vanilla unRAID screwing up. I hate to mess with that if I don't have to. I hope that makes sense Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. If this feature already exists somewhere and I'm just blind, please point me in the right direction! I would like to see a new column added to the GUI to display a disk's location. As it stands now, the GUI shows: Device and Identification then onto the temps, reads, writes.. What I am proposing is to add a section between Device and Identification called Location. I like the idea of it showing the drive serial number but I am not willing to put a label on every single hot swap bay with each drives serial number or keep a list/excel file showing what location each serial number resides in. With the improvements the GUI has made in recent past, I figured this would have been included as it's a logical step in the direction unRAID is heading with making things not only look better, but easier to use. Now I understand that not everyone runs a large unRAID server or even multiple unRAID servers, but some of us do. This could be a user defined field within Disk Settings. For myself, I have multiple JBOD chassis running off their own unRAID box. So let's assume I have three 12 bay 2U JBOD chassis which have 3 rows with 4 drives in each row. I could see this field being used as C2R3B1 equating to Chassis 2, Row 3, Bay 1.I think this would be extremely helpful to those of us running 24 bay chassis as well. Additionally I would like to see the Identification split into Model number and Serial number or Model & Serial. Right now it lists both sets of numbers but they are strung together as one number which they most certainly are not one number. It's more of an annoyance. It's the equivalent of me: typingeverythingasoneword. I can't believe I'm the only one who is annoyed by that Unless your using some ancient monitor to view your GUI, we have a ton of unused real estate within the GUI on the left and right side. So adding what I propose would still not require any scrolling.
  7. Sorry, I was referring to 36 array devices. I'm sure the vibration would kill my drives in a backblaze inspired pod but it would just be fun to build one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Just cause I'm curious, how much power does that thing draw at idle with no disks or how much wattage with disks and tell me how many disks are included in that figure? I've always been fascinated by the 36 bay variant of the backblaze pods. When unRAID reaches that level of data disks for the pro license I may have to build a couple of the 36 bay Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Sounds like you solved your issue but what I have done in the past and avoided reformatting the drives is on a Windows machine open that share, select all the files (Control key + A), hit the delete key. Share is now empty. Go back into unRAID and delete the share. No reformatting needed. Then do a new config and unRAID is back to its original state. Takes literally 2 minutes and your done. 10. I have also used that Syba card as well as the version with the 4 ports on the back vs two in back and two on top. Worked fine. I'm now using a 10 port card by Ableconn (PEX10-SAT) and also have zero issues with them. I wasn't real excited about the speed of that 10 port card while doing parity checks then had to wake up and remember I only do them once a month so the speeds of these cards are insignificant. 11. No that's not what I meant. I was saying if you try a large sustained transfer, you will see it slow down writing directly to the array and you will see your cache drive sustain those gigabit speeds. But as to the ssd being worthless, I use a 1TB spinner for my cache. I do this simply because I use unRAID as a NAS and only a NAS so all of my files are large media, not running VMs and dockers off cache where you might see a benefit.
  12. I would try something larger. Those are pretty small files. I would try a larger Blu Ray file or something with a bit more sustained transfer time and you should see a fairly large difference. But also keep in mind your not going to transfer anymore than gigabit speeds anyway since that should be your bottleneck to the cache.
  13. Chunks is how I did it as well. I never had a freezing problem (Windows 10) but I did transfer them in 2TB chunks. Did about 40TB that way and had zero issues.
  14. With the 8300 having a PassMark of 7,574, that would be enough for the three streams of 1080P your looking for and still leave some overhead. I run an 8350 and have had zero issues for years streaming whatever I need to at one time.
  15. I've always just shut my entire servers down when not in use. However, I am currently rebuilding and going to run them as just jbod chassis connected via 8088 cables. So I will be spinning them down. My Red's don't use anywhere near 4-6 watts spun down. I'm about 0.6 watts per drive according to my kilowatt meter. Now your drives may differ depending on what you have. But my 12 bay chassis sits at 21 watts with all drives spun down.
  16. It's funny you posted this, I was just about to ask this same question as I had looked at them on eBay as well and noticed how cheap they are these days for the older revisions which are still perfectly fine for media servers. Thanks!!
  17. Short of having a second server that holds just as many drives leaves you with the sneaker net type setup you currently have. You can pick up chassis dirt cheap on eBay/craigslist and even through deal threads of other members selling old heat here. Sounds like you have enough drives and you have the components for a backup server, just need the case/chassis. A used case/chassis can cost less that any of your drives, so I would think you can do it. As for what I do, I back up (2) of my 12 bay chassis to (1) 24 bay chassis. Both running unRAID 6.1.9. But I have all of my chassis in a rack so it makes it simple to just open the shared folder from my Windows machine (Windows 10) of each server and literally drag the entire contents over and do not replace/skip and file already present on the backup server.
  18. It's not that it's difficult, it's just that "most" users either won't do that or simply forget. I notice new version of unRAID on the forum before I ever see it as an update. Why? Because I don't constantly check for updates. What everyone is proposing is a very tiny footer message letting you know there is an update available without having to go through and click on plug ins. No feature is ever usable or positive for everyone. But with unRAID, you have to appeal to the masses. And let's be completely honest, since the LTT videos came out, I would have to assume unRAID is getting a lot of new users that are probably used to Windows doing all of this for them. I can see a lot of users running older versions of unRAID and having issues, thus asking for help/needing support for an issue that may have been resolved two or three revisions ago. This may not be 100% foolproof but I honestly believe it is a step in the right direction.
  19. Now that others have mentioned it, the way plex does it keeps me updated too. And not because it's convenient, it's because I open it and see that damn orange/yellow bar at the top and it's so obvious. I update just to get it off my damn screen! So yes, plex update notifications are very effective for me as well. The wording of plex is a little nicer (my opinion) as well. "unRAID OS V6.2.X is available"
  20. I'm a fairly new unRAID user and now have multiple pro and plus licenses. I say the above to note that although I'm new to unRAID, I am no stranger to servers. I would also like to see something like this in yellow text at the bottom of the pages saying there is an update to unRAID or the GUI. Yes I can manually go in and check for updates periodically but having a yellow text label on the pages similar to the text during a parity build/check would be helpful to say the least. And your correct, some users still won't upgrade but for the rest of us, it would be a nice and j assume simple feature to implement.
  21. Where is my AOL dial up disk.. I know it's here somewhere..
  22. So it sounds like your back up and running. That's the important part.
  23. I use the same "red ones" from Norco that are actually Molex brand. As far as telling from an online source, I honestly don't know. You can be sure if you buy them newegg and that state they are the reverse that they actually will be correct. I have also ordered some from Directron as they were cheaper at the time and they worked perfectly.
  24. That's strange that it doesn't work. I use that same exact cable on a couple of my chassis and it works just fine. Possible that you have bad ports or a bad cable but that doesn't seem likely to me since I assume those drive bays were working prior to the cable switch. I will say that on occasion using a Norco 2208 that if a drive was pulled out, unRAID would not see the drive again till it was either rebooted or I unmounted the array, then went in and clicked on new config, then added the drives back. Never lost any data but it might be worth a try. Edit: sorry for not seeing you chassis, I'm using tapatalk and it doesn't show me forum sigs
