  1. Hey guys, I have not used unraid in about 5 years. I still have my old one that was infected with ransomware actually (haha) then I moved to hosting with Hetzner and Gdrive. Right now I have 120TB of content. I have found some used 10, 12, 15, and 18TB drives, So in theory, I could probably get away with less than 20 drives. So here's what im thinking. I need a case, and I like norcos with the SAS backplanes alot. Ive seen people use netapp shelfs, I like this idea, but I feel like they would be power hungry and loud. I know unraid has probably come a long way in the last 5 years. My last build was 10 drives with 1 parity drive. Moving forward ill be looking for maximum Fault Tolerance. What's available now for parity and disaster recovery? So my requirements would be. 1. Front load (maybe top load) drive caddys 2. Enough space for Cache with fault tolerance 3. Multiple parity drives 4. 150TB initial build

Little back story, I used unRAID for years and then through a series of unfortunate events while relocating for work I got ransomware I didn't really have the upload bandwidth to support Plex anymore, so I took the opportunity to lease a hetzner server with synchronous gig. I've been using that for about 4 years Now I have fiber in my area and am considering moving everything back in house. Looks like not much has changed with unRAID from a hardware recommendation perspective. I found some refurbished 18T drives that should work fine and I'll use a similar Norco to my last one. Need to store roughly 130TB. The only changes I'll make are probably dual parity, and some kind of cache fault tolerance The question is, how easy is it to migrate that much data from a Google team drive with service accounts? What kind of download limits am I looking at? And should keep Google for $12 per month as a disaster plan? In that case I'd be looking for bidirectional sync, which I believe rclone supports
  3. Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me how that works? Does it hook up on its own independently, or does it have to interface with my existing h310 in some way?
  4. I am moving my from my 12 bay norco with a dell h310 + 4 onboard satas to a norco 4220. I am using a mAXT board with only a single PCIe 16 slot, so adding a second h310 is not an option. Rather than upgrading the board (then probably the CPU, Ram, and everything else) I have opted to just upgrade the controller. Is the LSI 9201-16i the best choice for this? On ebay they seem to range from $130 to $150. Is there a better deal out there? Planning to use the 16 port controller + 4 onboards to power the 20 bays. There are also 2 SSD slots in this case that I will also run off 2 other onboard sata ports for a total of 22 drives.

Just picked up a supernova 750 with a 12v @ 62A rail (~30 drives) for 89 USD on amazon. (12-year warranty) I believe the 850w model is only 99 with a 70A 12v rail Newegg also has a $20 MIR for the 750w model. and premier members get free shipping.
  6. Hey guys, I know the goal with unraid is to always use a single 12v rail when possible. However, I found this redundant PSU with what looks like 2x 19A rails per module. Obviously, I would expect one module to carry the load in the event of a failure. My current system only has 10 drives in it. Ill be moving to a Norco 4220. While I may never hit the 20 drive mark with hard drives increasing in size so quickly, I want the ability to do so. Right now I am running 10 drives on a 400w 25A PSU with no problems.   7. I have a norco 12 drive system (10 attached) based on an AMD Phenom 1045T. Had a PSU failure (7 years old). It was a 2U 450w Athena Power with a 26A 12v rail I had a 400w ATX, 25A Rail coolermaster just laying around, so I rigged it up, since it doesn't physically fit in the case. I know alot of people prefer to go with 700-1000W PSUs, but I am curious if anyone is running anything in the 300-400W range with a dozen drives? My KillAwatt meter only shows usage of about 140w, In the near future, I plan to move to a norco 20 bay case (Standard ATX size). I will likely go with a 700-800w PSU with a 50-60A 12v rail so that I can support a GPU and 20 drives
  8. I still see a couple of these "task abort messages in log - presumably they could be from the same drive, as it is no longer part of the array, but is still connected to the system. I am rebuilding Disk5 onto the 6TB now (Former Parity drive) Nov 30 16:26:12 Unraid kernel: sd 3:0:3:0: [sdi] Synchronize Cache(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=0x01 driverbyte=0x00 I assume drive sdi is this questionable drive, but for some reason, its not showing in my web interface right now... don't know why.   9. Thanks for the reply. Its connected to the same backplane and HBA as everything else, so who knows? Is this a bad drive in general or just bad for unraid? I guess what I am asking is should I just swap it out, and if so, would it function ok for normal desktop use, or as an external HD?

  11. I have a 3TB Hitachi_HUS724030ALE641 Enterprise Server Pull that I bought from newegg and still haven't opened. I thought maybe someone out there with arrays based on this size of drives could put it to more use. $50 shipped to USA if anyone is interested
  12. This issue has been bothering me for a while. I am confident that I am not the only one who has seen this. I have a single 1TB XFS formatted SSD cache drive, typical setup. Docker containers, VMs all on cache drive. My windows VM runs uTorrent and my download directory is the Cache drive. I use the windows VM to rename and move my torrents to their correct directories for plex to read. For about a year, if I try to torrent a large torrent, like 75-100 GG, my VM will slow to a crawl, or it will sometimes freeze and "reset". By that, I mean it will freeze then come back to life, but all of my torrents will have errors like they lost the UNC path. Also large file copies originating from inside the VM will fail as well. For instance, I am inside my windows VM and I browse to \\unraid\cache\.Torrents and I want to copy something to \\Unraid\Movies, windows will throw errors like the destination path disappears. This is probably unrelated, but I didnt notice this issue until I moved from a 500GB SSD to a 1TB SSD. I event went as far as to swap the 1TB SSD with a new 1TB SSD... no change. Also my AOC Supermicro controller started acting up with later versions of unraid, so I thought that might be the culprit. I swapped that controller with a Dell H310. Same behavior. Has anyone else seen similar behavior?
  13. I was doing some looking around and realized that the drives plugged into my motherboard ports are only operating at 3G rather than 6gs. Will I noticed any Improvement if I buy another HBA?
  14. My build was based on the Supermicro SAS controller that was so popular for many years. Parity syncs have always been somewhat slow. That controller would crash occasionally and mark 3-4 drives as missing. That happened again today, so I finally swapped it for a Dell H310 right now, my parity is syncing at 33MB. It does increase after a while, sometimes. I have attached a log to see if anything jumps out. EDIT after 30mins it is now up to 125MB. Is this slow start normal?   15. I currently have a 12 bay, 2u norco case that is probably 8 years old. With my drive sizes increasing, im not sure that I will actually NEED more drives than 12. However, I would like to upgrade to a 12G speed chassis to future proof myself, however, norco does not list any 12G chassis. Supermicro on the other hand lists plenty. Is it true that Norco still only has a 6G chassis?
  16. I have my unraid server in a 2U case, so only LP cards will fit. Through some limited searching, it looks like a LP 1050 was made. I do not see any LP variants for the 1070. My question is, how would these compare for transcoding 4k video? I am debating on moving to a 4U case to accommodate a better card

  19. Im actually glad you brought this up. Let me also share my reasoning for this.. When I started ny library almost 10 years ago, I always ripped my content as a 700MB Compressed DVD Rip. I thought it looked perfectly fine on my 32 and 42in TV, especially from a distance. As time passed and my TVs have gotten larger, my SD rips look downright awful, and I find myself scrambling to upgrade my content. In response to that, I know try to capture my content in the highest resolution possible to "future proof" myself.
  20. I have an older CPU. Phenom 1045T with a passmark of about 4800. I use Roku to play back almost all content. I figure I have 3 options here. 1. Keep server as-is and switch out the roku platform for something that can play 4k hvec natively 2. I looked at new CPUs. The Ryzen 2700x seems to be a good value with a reasonable 17000 passmark, thoughts? 3. Add a GPU to handle transcoding Option 1 would obviously be the cheapest. But long term I am not sure this solves alot of my issues. The server is older and the CPU keeps up with every other demand other than transcoding. Option 2 is ultimately the most expensive. The CPU alone is north of 300 dollars. Add a board, RAM, new PSU, and probably a new h310 HBA (since im in there) and the price starts creeping up to 750 pretty quick. That is, of course, assuming the 2700x is a good value for my application. Option 3. Doing some light reading, I understand that there may be a way to do GPU offloading for transcoding. I can easily obtain a 1070 for $300, or even a 1070TI for just over $400. What are people using in this space? And how does GPU transcoding compare to CPU? Thanks for all input Edit: After some more reading, it looks like option 3 may only be available on Intel-based systems? If this is true, perhaps a combination of a server refresh with some GPU offloading makes sense?
  21. Thanks guys. I will try transcoding to RAM to rule out the SSD. I can confirm on the actual 4k video is definitely a CPU issue. For the 1080p video I mentioned earlier, im betting that is an SSD problem
  22. Thanks. I just tried a 1080p h264 rip @ 10.7M and it does the same thing. I ran Htop just to see and unsurprisingly, it did not get out of whack. So I definitely have a deeper issue that just started cropping up. We also tried this from one of our mobile phones, so that rules out the roku, and I don't have any reason to believe that my router or AP are having any issues. However, two things I have noticed in the not-so-distant past were my Supermicro controller "crashing" during a parity rebuild and also occasionally my windows VM will error out on large file copies and I have to use putty to do them through command line. So this leads me down the path of either a controller issue perhaps, or maybe even a bad SSD
  23. My server is a bit up there in age. Running and AMD 1045T 6 core server, playing back on Roku 3. I know the roku 3 is not technically compatible with 4k video, so I have set plex to transcode as low as 720p and it still buffers every minute or so. But I can't figure out if this is a result of the Server, the cache drive transcode location, the roku itself, or a network issue. From a CPU standpoint, I do not see the CPU hitting 100% utilization during the transcode process The cache drive transcode location is an SSD My AP is a Cisco 3700 That should have no issues serving up this content. So I am appealing to the minds of the unraid community, hoping someone has seen this before. Oh, there is one more thing. I am still using that supermicro AOC HBA that was in every unraid build 10 years ago. I know people have been moving away from those. Could that be causing this behavior?
