Plex Media Server

Featured Replies

Ok here’s where we’re at

Did the whole first part, didn’t work.  Appeared like I could add new folder, but media was not added, did the whole instant library scan complete, without showing the new movie.  Def confirmed that the permissions for folder and movie were at 777.  No dice!

Did next part:

Deleted plex folder and files… had to change permissions to 777 before I could delete them all.  Then deleted old cache share ‘appdata’.  Created new cache share ‘plexapp’.  Went back to plex settings page which was now stopped (prob should have stopped before deleting folder, oops).  Changed paths to new share plexapp.  Stopped array.  Unfortunately got stuck at ‘unmounting disks’ possibly related to plex and how I deleted the folder before stopping array?  (double oops)

Did hard reboot (pulled power).  Array came up.  Saw in settings that plex was running.

Went to plex, tried adding my normal movie folder, as well as that singlemovie.  No luck!  Tried rebooting one more time

When server came up this time, started with plex ‘stopped’.  Could not start using plex media server ‘enable plex media server’.  If I choose yes, it would not start, tried ‘no’ and then yes again, but would not start.  I have noticed this before so its not new. Could not access web interface.

Rebooted a third time.  Plex came up showing as running.  Went to web interface.  Tried adding a couple of things, but same old prob ‘library scan complete’ instantly.  Then tried emptying trash, optimizing database, clean bundles etc.  somehow this crashed plex, however it was still showing in the unraid setting as running, but when I clicked the word ‘running’ or accessed the normal webpage I use, both ‘could not establish a connection’.  I think plex crashed but still reported as running

Went to go post on above results, and noticed Tyler’s post.  Ran permissions check, and yes the plex folde was owned by root.  Ran the command he specified to change ownership of the plex folder to unraid-plex.  Tried to start PMS through unraid settings page (this never seems to work for me) so then rebooted (my fourth time so far tonight!)  I know this will blow you away but SAME PROBLEM!!!

Ok so here’s something else.  I had a post on the plex forum but got very little response.  However one guy looked at my logs and said my ‘agents’ were incomplete…will post his comments, not sure if its worth pursuing.

I'm not an expert, but I've taken a quick look at your logs. Any reason for adding the DLNA Server log rather than the Scanner Log?

It looks like you have an issue with your agents:

There are some other posts on this in the broader Plex sub-forums and what to do to resolve which might help. While I am not an expert, without TheMovieDB etc agent then you are not going to be able to match your media.

I've not had a chance to look further down the log to see if the above is resolved. But a quick scan down the log showed some other errors such as about 'iOS' and also

here's the post, giving credit to TheWombat from the plex forums.  have no idea if this is a problem or how to fix but thought i'd share?  not sure if the agents he's refering to are for metadata, or just getting media recognized by Plex?

Reminds me of a similar issue I tried to help someone withe a few pages back.

Here's another thing to try, again telnet into your unraid box:

Make sure Plex is stopped.

Have a look in the folder: /mnt/cache/appdata/Plex/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins

Are there any files in there?

If so, delete them all.  Start Plex again and it should re-download all the bundles (incl media scanning bundles).

If not, you could have an Internet access issue from your unraid box (typically unraid hasn't picked up DNS settings).

So try pinging google.com, does that work?

Also, what are the specs of your unraid box?  Specifically how much RAM have you got?

I'm here as well. Hope the various suggestions you are getting help solve the issue.

:-)

TheWombat

Ok stopped plex through unraid settings tab.  Yes within the plugins folder there were about 15 folders with files in them.  Deleted all files in plug-ins folder through telnet.

Tried to restart plex through unraid settings tab.  Never seems to work for me.  Rebooted.  Plex started okay, then looked in the plug-ins folder and it looked like all the stuff I deleted was now back, so I guess that worked?  I’m wondering if everything is being downloaded, or just some stuff…. Ie why was I getting the error wombat found that some items were missing?

Tried adding media source and scanning.  Same prob as before!!!  I’m almost worried you great support people are going to think I’m scamming, because you’ve directed me to so many potential fixes, but they still result in the same problem!!!

In terms of pinging google, I think it worked but hate to be such a newb that I can’t tell!  Literally entered ping google.com and then the following pic is what happened… looks like its working but not sure… ran for a long time and took this pic while it was working and then eventually closed the session.  When I’ve pinged another computer on my network it usually just sends 4 packets, but pinging and external server seemed to take forever?  I think working but just kept going?

I don't think the problem is related to the plugins warning. I did a totally fresh install which is working and I have the exactly same warnings in my log. I went through all the warning and error lines in your and my log and they matched. The differences take place when the library refresh is started.

The only thing which I see you might be doing differently is the creation of appdata share on cache disk. Try the following:

1. Stop Plex service if it is running

2. Delete existing /mnt/cache/appdata

3. Through the unRAID weg gui create a new user share (Shares / Add share). Give it a name "appdata" and for "use cache disk" select "only".

This is exactly how I created the share, I did not create the /mnt/cache/appdata folder by hand.

If this does not help, I'm bummed. If you have installed everything exactly according to the the instructions I previously posted you should be seeing a working Plex. You could try the installation like I did, with the use of telnet/putty and without rebooting the server between the steps. I have a gut feeling that this either all related to the permissions of the appdata folder structure OR you have something really funny going on with your whole unRAID setup. My own bet is on some super simple difference in the way you perform the steps ;)

The above is based on the fact that you don't get a scanner log at all. You should get a scanner log even if the scanner does not find anything. On the other hand you do get other logs written in the same log folder by Plex so it is kind of odd if it was a permission issue. Something makes the scanner hang on library refresh. If you google for "plex scanner linux hangs" you get results where they always have a scanner log to analyse. I couldn't find any results where the scanner log was completely missing...

When analysing this kind of problem you should always try to limit the variables. If all prevail, I would try a stock unRAID 5.0 install with no other addons or any other customisations running, just your array settings. I would take a full backup (=copy) of your flash contents and print out the disk arrangement. Then I would format the flash and re-install a fresh copy of the unRAID 5.0 onto it. Once you get the array back online (using the disk arrangement printout) I would follow the Plex installation instructions to the letter. If something wouldn't work like instructed (like Plex service wouldn't start before rebooting) I would stop and try to analyse why it didn't work like instructed since it should. If I could not find the solution on my own then I would post a series of screen caps showing exactly what you have done to get to that point. You might become blind to some step you perform which others might immediately see as a problem source.

Hi henris. I created a new share exactly as you described called plex app. Using cache only. But no difference!

Really not sure I want to go to a stock unraid install... Most other things seems to be working so I don't want to screw up absolutely everything. I can at least access everything through windows pc

When I'm installing I have been dragging the install file into the boot extra folder BUT doing this through windows?  I know I've said I copied it over bit it wasn't through telnet, it was through windows. Could that cause permissions to be set weird?

Also wombat found an error in my log that the local media scanner was missing!  Seems like that might be the file that does the scanning or creates the log?  No idea why...I wonder if someone had a fresh clean install, could they zip up their plex folder and i could replace mine and try?

Hence I instructed to start this by making a full copy of the flash contents ;) You can always go back simply by formatting the flash, copying files back and running make_bootable.bat. There is for sure something weird going on and this is the only way to to see if it is something to do with your unRAID setup. For the fresh stock unRAID you need just the disk arrangement printed out and license file copied, other wise you can do it through the normal new install procedure. Anyways everyone should have a full backup of their flash available for disaster recovery and should sometime test that it still works. Although disk arrangement is the only information which cannot be recreated if total failure strikes, there is usually quite a bit of effort spent installing all the addons. So backup the flash in any case. I always backup the whole flash when making any major changes to the unRAID. And store the backup outside unRAID ;)

Shouldn't cause any problems. That's the proper way to do it. Out of curiosity, do you have multiple users defined?

Also wombat found an error in my log that the local media scanner was missing!  Seems like that might be the file that does the scanning or creates the log?  No idea why...I wonder if someone had a fresh clean install, could they zip up their plex folder and i could replace mine and try?

In which log is this? I read through the thread in Plex forums and couldn't find such a error. However I did see a log containing all sorts of errors like sqlite recovery etc. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that stock unRAID and preferrably 5.0 final is the next step. If you get it working with stock, you can easily update your current flash to 5.0 final. If it fails, you know for sure it's one of your addons/customisations. Then you start adding those in groups or one by one to see which causes the problem.

ok henris... i'm just a bit in nervous mode!  i think i tend to agree that maybe this isn't a plex only problem (i also have yamj installed which has been acting wonky but i didn't even want to bring that up)  Considering i've upgraded, downgraded, done full fresh installs of new and old versions, it really doesn't seem logical that plex isn't working by now.  so two quick questions...

1.  when you say flash to stock, does that mean a fresh clean install of the current version i'm on ie 5.012b?  or should i do a fresh of 5.0 final?  seems like you're saying move to 5.0 later but not sure if i'm reading right...

2.  your comments on backups reminded me that i DO have a full backup of the flash drive, taken maybe 3 months ago (well before this problem!)  I suppose i could try to backup my current flash, and then copy the 3 month old backup?  think that's worthwhile, or should i just head to 'fresh'

as for your other comments:

i don't have any users defined other than root... when i go to the users tab in unraid it just shows root.

as for the errors, i had a post on the plex forums back when plex was working but just not adding new files... i think wombat was looking in the media scanner log that i had back then (now gone since i've done several totally fresh installs).  here's the errors he posted on the plex forums

I would definitely recommend 5.0 final, though I'd suspect that 5.0rc12 or greater should work. But since you are doing it fresh anyways there is no reason to use anything else. If 5.0 final works, then you could even try the 5.0rc12 you are running now but without any addons.

Steps for trying out 5.0 final with Plex only:

1. Take a full backup of your flash drive by copying all the files and folders to some other computer

2. Take a screenshot of the drive arrangement in unRAID web gui

3. Format the flash

4. Download the 5.0 final from here

5. Install the 5.0 final on the flash following the instructions

6. Copy the license file from your flash backup to the flash

7. Boot the server with the new flash

8. Assign the drives in unRAID web gui according to the screenshot taken in Step #2

9. Start the array

10. Install Plex according to the instructions previously in this thread

2.  your comments on backups reminded me that i DO have a full backup of the flash drive, taken maybe 3 months ago (well before this problem!)  I suppose i could try to backup my current flash, and then copy the 3 month old backup?  think that's worthwhile, or should i just head to 'fresh'

Start with fresh. If it works, then you can try the old backup. If it works, then you know it is some change done after that. If it doesn't then it is either the unRAID version or some addon installed before the backup was taken. If you have installed any new drives since the backup was taken, you will have to assign them correctly.

I will repeat it, take a backup of your flash before any major change or installation. Personally I do it even for minor changes since disk space is cheap and the size of whole flash content is anyways so small. It just so much easier to copy-paste the files to their original state than trying to figure out what is the proper uninstall procedure.

thanks henris, i think your instructions are very clear.  one thing i'm not sure about though, is how do i recreate my shares?

thanks henris, i think your instructions are very clear.  one thing i'm not sure about though, is how do i recreate my shares?

For testing purposes you can use the default disk shares (/mnt/disk1/Media/Media/Movies). If it works, then you can just enable user shares and unRAID automatically populates a list of user shares with default settings (they might not appear in the web gui before reboot but they are available for Plex). Since you only read from the shares in this test, you don't need to do anything else.

ok thanks.. for testing i will just use a disk path

assuming it works, you say i can just enable user shares... i'm still a bit foggy on this.  will unraid just sort of 'know' that when i have a media folder on 16 out of 18 disks, to just gather up all the folders and make it a share?  or after i enable shares, will i have to 'tell' unraid what to include in the share?  i have probably 15 or so shares setup all of which basically span most of the disks, and i'm just thinking ahead to what's involved in recreating... i'm sort of guessing that the unraid 5.0 final will recognize a mulitdisk share, probably because of the way my previous version set it up.

secondly, just to be crystal clear, the backing up of the flash should occur by physically removing it from the server and connecting to my windows pc correct?  i currently have my flash setup as a share (not sure if i did this, or if unraid did it by default) but its quite handy because i can just go to the flash through windows pc and copy everything over... i'm guessing maybe this isn't picking everything up such as the serial key?

not trying to turn this thread into 'how to upgrade unraid' but i guess these questions are sort of related to my path forward to solving my super bizarre plex problem!!!

unRAID will automatically create a user share for each root folder on all of your disks when you enable user shares. The same will happen when ever you add a new root folder. In 4.7 these automatically created user shares became visible in web gui when the server was restarted. I haven't tested this on 5.0. However you need access the settings only if you wish to change some setting like split level or limit the participating disks.

All flash content is available through the flash-share which is automatically created by unRAID. You can copy all the content while the server is running. The license key is stored in config folder on flash (you have copied it there yourself when following the instructions).

edit:  oh no, had it working now no longer.  added 4 media sources, but now after adding my main movie folder, still getting instant library scan complete!!!

Backed everything up, took many many screenshots of settings etc.  copied flash over a couple of times, once from the share, and once from the flash drive when the server was shutdown

Formatted flash, and prepared for boot

Booted up and assigned drives.  Took a while to make certain drives were in right spot!

Array started.  Wanted to start parity check but I stopped it… maybe I should do this later but it takes about 16 hours or so!

Although you didn’t say this, I went in to network settings to fix the ip address to the same address and settings as before.  Thought I should do this as I’d probably need putty…

Remembered that I didn’t delete the plex folder before powering down.  Went to plex folder, tried to delete but couldn’t, said need permission from Unix/999 (didn’t read this carefully, but I’ve had these errors everytime I’ve tried to delete.  When in through putty and did a chmod –R 777 on the Plex directory.  Then able to delete

Went to install plex.  First thing I noticed was that the previous instructions said to install into a cache only share, do then enabled user shares… I think this is a bit different than you instructed but hope that’s okay

Went to shares.. .noticed that my plexapp share (and all shares) were there (as you said they would be).  Clicked on plexapp share, and set to cache disk only

Copied plex over and installed from telnet

Installed, changed paths through unraid, enabled to run.  Went to web page interface.  Added that single movie folder I had  and…..big finish…

It worked!!! Holy crap I sort of figured it had to work because it’s a totally fresh install but I think I would have gone bonkers if it didn’t, was pretty much at the end of my rope!  Thank you thank you thank you… we definitely need a way to buy virtual (or real) beers on this forum!!!

so now starting to add back other programs... have now installed sab, sickbeard, transmission...plan to reduce other progrs ie not just install because i used to have it!

but now no longer working... at least i have log files now like a scanner log.  so exhausted and depressed

The latest series of unRAID 5.x Beta has the ability to mark what folders on the cache drive are shares and which one's are not.

I just installed this with 5.0 final. Where do I tell the mover not to move the files? I have the directories the same as in the guide

/mnt/cache/appdata/plex/Library

/mnt/cache/cachetmp/plextmp

I haven't started the plugin yet though.

Ok sorry for the never ending updates

Tried uninstalling a few things from unmenu and then rebooting. Took out screen, monthly parity check, mail and ssmtp, and unraid status email. I like all these but they were among the latest things I installed so i guessed that maybe they caused a problem

Rebooted server. Came up, tried plex. Was able to add movies!  Could no longer access unmenu  for some reason though

Going to let the movie files finish adding. Will probably reboot server, see if plex still working, then try access unmenu. If able to, will try adding the removed progs back one at a  time

I've been using all four basically since day one so I would be really surprised of they were the problem. Maybe plex just needed a restart after adding so many files?  Maybe it had nothing to do with the four programs above?

Any thoughts welcome?

edit:  oh no, had it working now no longer.  added 4 media sources, but now after adding my main movie folder, still getting instant library scan complete!!!

Don't give up now ;) I don't know which additional step actually caused it to stop working but now you have a way to find it. From the above I somehow deduct that you might be thinking it was the addition of your main movie folder. Have you tried going back to the library settings which targeted that one movie file? Does it still work? If it doesn't, then you will have start all over again. Hope you did take a backup of the working 5.0 flash ;)

When you do this again, execute a library scan after each change or group of changes you perform. You can then narrow down and pinpoint the problematic change. You just have to be very systematic and taking notes. Personally I favor screen cap tools which on a hotkey press take a screen shot of the current window and store it some predefined folder.

Since you now know how easy it is actually try out stock settings, just go to the beginning. Usually the more you  go back and forth in the settings or uninstall/install the more mess you make. Especially if you were to find a working setup it could be very difficult to reproduce.

I've got a hunch know that this might very well be related to your main movie folder, either it's contents or it's permissions. But you will have to be 100% that it's the cause for zero length library refresh before we start to analyse it.

In your case I would create two user shares (appdata and cachetmp) and for those set "Use Cache Disk" to "only". This is cleanest way to do it in 5.0. Personally I would set the Plex temp directory to /mnt/cache/appdata/plex/temp to avoid the second share.

I've unMenu, screen and mail installed and they do not interfere with Plex. It would be unlikely for the other two to do that either. I will need them on my new system so I will try them out in the evening (it's now 7.20AM in here). Take a backup of your flash drive frequently when adding new things, that way you can go back in time easily.

Thanks! Removed the other share and change it to be /plex/temp

ok little upate...

the main movie folder appeared to complete overnight.  This morning, i tried a library refresh, and it didn't give me the instant 'complete' situation, but it did sort of hang... when i clicked the update button, it just kind of spun for a while and then stopped, but then library wasn't updated.

realized that unmenu hadn't come up because i forgot to modify the go script... so changed, that and rebooted.  reinstalled the four missing items from unmenu.  tried library refresh.  worked fine!  can see entire library being scanned.

so in summary after reinstall i have added my entire library... library scan seems to work well directly after a reboot.  has either not worked or been wonky after adding a large chuck of library and then attempting rescan

will try living with it for a while and see where we go!

Hope this is the right place to post this question: I have a question regarding setting up DLNA Client profiles

I have setup Plex plugin successfully on my unraid box and my library is updated.

I've setup the following paths:

/mnt/cache/.applications/Plex/library

/mnt/cache/.applications/Plex/temp

Now - I noticed that when I access my media from my PS3 it would always transcode the media even though I know for certain that the PS3 can play my media directly. I went thru the logs - found the profile that was missing and added it to thed directplay profile list for the "Playstation 3" client in the following file:

/mnt/cache/.applications/Plex/library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/System.bundle/Contents/Resources/dlnaclientprofiles.xml

Then I restarted Plex by executing the following:

/etc/rc.d/rc.plexmediaserver stop

/etc/rc.d/rc.plexmediaserver start

The server started up again without issues but I noticed that the changes I had made to the dlnaclientprofiles.xml file were overwritten with what was in it originally. So my changes were not reflected. Is there a differnt user profile XML file which I can edit and not have them overwritten on restart? If not - is there any other way to make the changes to the profile XML?

Cheers!

You have a different issue than I have ever had with Plex profiles, but I had to edit the Sony Blu-ray profile a while back. I'm pretty noobish when it comes to unraid, I don't even have a cache drive. I'm sure there's a more elegant and efficient solution, but this is what I did to modify profiles:

Get plex up and running. (Started from unRaid web)

Using putty I logged into my server.

I then went to the temporary plex install directory which for me was "/usr/local/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles"

I copied the file (Sony Blu-ray.xml" over to my local machine. Made the changes as required.

Copied it back over to my server.

Then the profile worked as I needed it to. I still have to copy it over whenever I restart the server or update/reinstall plex though, but it worked for me. I can see a Playstation 3.xml file in that directory on my plex install so I'd be going with modifying that profile.

Thanks liuzhen!

I think that'll work for me. I didn't realize that there is a /usr/local/plexmediaserver directory. I'll make my changes there and see how it goes.
